Guthrie describes how to master the art of bending, intonation and vibrato. As an extra treat, we get to see how to play Flight of the Bumblebee using bends!
An incredibly skilled and musical player. Guys like this are operating at a completely different frequency than most of us. Don't be discouraged, just be glad there are gifted musicians like him that can reveal to us all what is possible. Seems like a real caring type of a person too.
I gotta say, I have learnt alot from watching Guthrie, I think he is probably one of the few guitarists that can teach in a way that makes total sense, and also gives examples when it comes to techniques
This guy is a real innovator, he changed the way how we look at guitar today. His names needs to be along with those of Hendrix, R. Blackmore, J. Page or Brian May
Roland Mátyási I love his playing, his teaching videos, Erotic Cakes, and The Aristocrats...but I've never thought of him as an innovator. He's more like a dictionary of everything electric guitar.
+IGotSoupProductions I agree. I don't think he's added anything new in terms of guitar technique or composition, but damn he's mastered guitar playing and as you said, is the dictionary of electric guitar
That trick about bringing your bend slightly sharp and then pulling up and down to get the proper tune vibrato was a huge breakthrough for me. It sounds simple but I wasn't doing it and not thinking to I guess. I kept trying to bend it to the pitch exactly and then come down and back up and it sounded like shit but that idea of bending to the note and bringing it slightly higher so when you're going up and down your in tune still totally changed my vibrato on bends. Like a light bulb going on.
Guthrie is a Saint.... These guys have devoted their lives entirely to the love of their instruments..! I could have never thought that could bend chromatically like he showed and moreover he showed the practical application too...!
Hilarious and so stereotypical, the german guy at 1:44 asks if you could use a tuner to make sure you're playing the notes right hahahah omg it's like they dropped the token German guy into the clinic lol "NEIN!! IT MUST BE ACCURATE! DAS IST NICHT AUSGEZEICHNET!!"
2:45. Depends on which part of the bend gets the emphasis. You can do a slow a bend bent to perfect pitch and release the bend (make it go flat) as long bent note is heard for slightly longer than the flat note. A fast vibrato probably sounds better going sharp. I like the sound of a slow vibrato going flat then returning to pitch slightly faster than the release to the flatted note.
I was at this clinic. Guthrie said that taking video for private use was fine, but specifically asked us not to upload it to youtube. Not cool bro. Guthrie Govan frowns on you.
@@gustanoid it's probably cuz he needs to make a living, and having his secrets out for free is kinda bad for him Idk if he has a course cuz I'd definitely listen to the advice that Guthrie Gives cuz he's an amazing teacher
I wonder if he still holds to that. There isn't a guitar player I know who'd miss the chance to attend a Guthrie clinic if he was in the area, no matter how many online videos they consumed beforehand. That said, I don't think he travels around doing these smaller clinics any longer, as his profile has risen greatly since that time. Hans Zimmer hiring you and hailing you as one of the greatest guitarists ever will have that effect.
I was at a clinic in London a few years ago; he walked off the stage at the end of the show a bit irritated with his closing line "I'll leave you to your own devices" after people filming.
I think he's wrong about the "post on TH-cam" thing... Let's be honest, even the majority of us passionated found out the guy through online videos... And seeing some of his gigs or the aristocrats could only get more people to buy tickets and attend concerts... Unfortunately being such a great musician (or band) doesn't give you the chance to make a living out of it unless you're in the mainstream
Provided your bridge and nut have no sharp edges, it's actually quite possible to bend the strings even further using 10s or even 11s. However, doing that for prolonged periods of time increases the risk of hurting either your finger tips or hand muscles if you're not sufficiently warmed up and have callouses of utter deadly awesomeness, so yeah...
@CWPtacek i have seen emails to users on youtube which ask for videos to be removed due to potentially damaging his reputation. so i guess it must be both the reason i have seen and the reasons you have heard.
@Dudleyrulz Well, I'm not accusing anyone of doing anything evil. I know what it was like, when I was dying to get every last piece of recorded footage of my favorite guitarists back in the day. All I know is, in so many words, in conversations I've had with GG at public events, he said that the reason he doesn't want bootlegs and youtube stuff floating is NOT because it may reflect poorly on him, but because he does those events for the attendees, not for the nameless/faceless internet.
@ricomajestic Guthrie govan words of wisdom His bending master class (different from this video) Just search up Guthrie govan clinic Or Guthrie govan and just watch every possible video
I concur. Guthrie still does clinics from time to time, it's part of how he makes his living. Who will want to attend when people post extended videos of them online for free? This is not a victimless crime. In respect to Guthrie remove this or shorten it to a few seconds of your favorite little nugget. Otherwise, for shame Sam.
@Dudleyrulz Yeah, but you're not doing Guthrie any favors by "trading it for other rare stuff." You're either sharing it (which GG doesn't want) or you're keeping it to yourself (which GG prefers.) He's one of the few guys who is on record saying he doesn't want people recording and sharing his shows and clinics. He's polite about it, but there's no room for interpretation. He says "I do these things for the people in attendance, not for the youtube community." Pretty black and white.
An incredibly skilled and musical player. Guys like this are operating at a completely different frequency than most of us. Don't be discouraged, just be glad there are gifted musicians like him that can reveal to us all what is possible. Seems like a real caring type of a person too.
Can confirm he is an absolute top bloke as well.
And you are as well😀
Agrees with Sutapa 🤟
ive been playing guitar for more than 30 years.... and never seen anybody like this guy... he is awesome...
I gotta say, I have learnt alot from watching Guthrie, I think he is probably one of the few guitarists that can teach in a way that makes total sense, and also gives examples when it comes to techniques
have you tryed Yngwie Malmsteen teaching?!!?!? ....... jk
On'y Guthrie could play Flight of the Bumblebee on one fret.
And only one string
@@DennyBahana i don't see how it can be one fret and two strings
Amazing lesson! After 20 minutes of practicing, it really helps improve my bending technique
IGotSoupProductions interesting view, thanks. I still believe he is a real innovator of guitar playing although I got your point as well
+IGotSoupProductions I agree. I don't think he's added anything new in terms of guitar technique or composition, but damn he's mastered guitar playing and as you said, is the dictionary of electric guitar
Roland Mátyási lol
..no ..he's a great player and teacher but he just doesn't have that special edge to rank alongside the likes of Hendrix , Page etc..
That trick about bringing your bend slightly sharp and then pulling up and down to get the proper tune vibrato was a huge breakthrough for me. It sounds simple but I wasn't doing it and not thinking to I guess. Thats amazing!
I cannot believe that I’ve only now found this guy. Great explanations and for a visual learner. Me! He’s a god send. Thanks man
Guthrie doesnt make mistakes. He just makes wrong notes sound right.
his teaching is like his playing: expert level, highly developed and refined and just fantastic fun to see and hear.
even when talking about simple techiniques, this guy blows my mind
He makes me unable to put my guitar down. So much inspiration.
Bro, his bending is so unbelievably intentional and vocal
Very much so!
love that bend of Gary moore parisian walkways 2:53
great guitarist and even greater teacher and even better presenter/performer
Guthrie is a Saint....
These guys have devoted their lives entirely to the love of their instruments..!
I could have never thought that could bend chromatically like he showed and moreover he showed the practical application too...!
UnReal - Thanks Guthrie. Learning so much from you. Your Masterful Playing Inspires me.
Just quality...an excellent way of explaining all things guitar!!
Amazing guitarist. He vibrates - with his fingers - strings the way Jeff Beck vibrates with the tremolo arm.
This guy is the best guitar teacher I have seen. The combination of musicality, genres and chops is awesome. Not just a shred head.
He obviously enjoys it. Notice how the bends make him smile! And, the technical is required for better playing.
Guthrie Govan is like the Vsauce of music.
Or Vsauce is the Guthrie Govan of Science
As the fly approaches 'fuck' 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hilarious and so stereotypical, the german guy at 1:44 asks if you could use a tuner to make sure you're playing the notes right hahahah omg it's like they dropped the token German guy into the clinic lol "NEIN!! IT MUST BE ACCURATE! DAS IST NICHT AUSGEZEICHNET!!"
***** lol I should know.. I lived there for 3 years :-)
hahahaha... excellent! Germans, you know... :)
Philip Zilfo hahahahahah that’s some funny shit!
Wonderful video ! many thanks for this moment....have a nice day
What a master
I ever thought my bendings sucks, no I realized that I can't found a word to describe how I really suck
Judah Ben Hur
Work on your English before your bending😂
Thanks so much for this lesson! Can't wait to start practicing it!
bumble bee with bends...phenomenal, this cat is probably the most intriguing shredder in the world.
I swear, this guy's vibrato is the tastiest thing ever.
He's amazing 😁😮...
"Or if you are Zakk Wylde" lol
Can you put a time stamp

+jerky2112 I am now thinking there may be more subtle variation involved in viabrato than I realized.
Start playing guitar at the age of 3. Now he has 43. 40 years of playing guitar. Ok bye!
+Michele Bogdan Craciun bye.
Thinking that he was still in school in the amount of time I study music at all
5:30 INCOMING!!!!!
GroovinMWC It's the actual "flight of the bumblebee"!!!!! he invoked it :O
Priceless
nice lesson ... thx for posting !

I love how he plays flight of the bumble bee then a bee flies into his face! how ironic? cool vid tho
+Kedree Young I read your comment, looked out the window, and there's a bee trying to get in.. ;o(
Guthrie is the St Francis of the guitar world.
My favorite guitarist alive other than David Gilmour. But Guthrie teaches too, so he's so much more influential
marty friedman has to be the king of that kind of prebending and going slightly flat
+Mihalis Salpadimos - lol yah and eddie *invented* tapping...
"just be honest with yourself."
well, I'm never going be this good, ever.
perfect player✌️
6:03 , activate subs and the guitar speaks "we movin, the million, hey, the nikkei, have more meaning" lol
It actually kinds sounds like that XD.
at 0:11 "Hell something" lol
tomyhas
Bro sorry when you bro so much. 3:14
Wtf....
lol, guthrie stuff :D
Also, if I got the opportunity to have Guthrie as a guitar teacher, I'd say yes without hesitating
A Master!!
No matter which guitar or amp, it always sounds meaty or mellow - I guess it's the fingers your honour...
It was the bumblebee asking Govan to play its song!
man i wanna see him rip on that caparison in the background
Short and not melodic but still fun as hell: th-cam.com/video/hzg4tSKnZyw/w-d-xo.html
I love his indian phrasing at the end of the vid :D
3:00 man, that face is pure happiness
damn, so cool! Which cauge of strings he is using? I want my kid start on guitar on 3yr old as well.
yeah you're right, they both sound similar at that bit!
did person on far right at 4:57 eat a booger?

awesum, it's the Freak Guitar Camp
unbelievable.
1:25 yay..we all will try that right now..and we all will fail ;o)
yo, 1 second in and i already lost it
did anybody else notice he started playing parisienne walkways at 2:57 and then he smiled at the camera .
4:43 Moondance by Van Morrison.

wonder how long until this gets removed like last time.
you know, that should be encouraging... you should touch it right away!
awesome
At 5:51 does anyone know the type of lick that is?
legato
Wankato

2:02. Heck it!
@Sambuccashake i have the whole clinic and would be willing to trade it for any other rare guthrie stuff.
@Dudleyrulz Why dont you just post it & share it with the geetar community dude? I can tell you now that hundreds of players would love to see it!
also I think I heard a bit of 'If I only had a heart' from wizard of oz?
Bruh 6 years playing and my vibratos sounds like a beginner even after practicing a lot :( guess I'll have to keep doing it
5:11 sounds like Marty Friedman
+Evil Snake's Music +100000000
Marty better than this guy
Saxondale really can play guitar!
in-frickin-credible
Ooohh, he's a clever skilful chappy.. :)
@louie180 That was the bumblebee from hell that comes if you play it with bending.
its all in the microtonal nuances
This is guy is great! Does this guy have other videos that anyone can recommend?

Jesus has fun with his electric guitar :D
i dont think anyone recognised him playing parisienne walkways at around 3:01
who else broke their b string trying this?
2:56 Mr crowley
it's close but I think it's parisienne walkways by Gary Moore
ThePepitothepew correct
2:50 to 3:10 what song is that? I can't remember
how the hell does he bend that much without breaking it? is he using a really light string gauge?
Bending with the G string is the most fun...😂
moondance!
@DemonBird
well can he play "there's a place in France" then? :-)
@hedrasramoslive
Alas, this is the only clip I've gotten my hands on.
