I truly appreciate your channel. Listening to you reminds me of the conversations I had at university. Thoughtful, measured but enthusiastic. I saw the Alpinist a few years ago on Netflix and it was breathtaking. I think it’s a film that even those who are not inclined to that genre will love. Looking forward to seeing more of your recommendations. What made you decide to start making videos? I am seriously thinking of doing something on TH-cam, but can never settle on a subject that I like, or more correctly, pick just one. Ciao
I'm a little embarrassed to admit I was inspired to make videos by watching Dr Who fans on TH-cam discussing the series - WhoTubers! Some of them were very funny and sharp. Also, during COVID, I found myself trawling through TH-cam a lot. I've been writing film reviews and criticism for years but was losing my enthusiasm and wanted to move more into video criticism. But I thought, why not try this? Present some informative but hopefully laid-back and amusing chat about something I love - like you say, like a conversation among friends. It's a different type of criticism, in a way. And TH-cam is one of the only venues that supply it. It's incredibly rare in print now, for example. Do it - make a channel!
Thanks for another interesting and informative video, Mike! I have seen "The Rider" which you mentioned, but none of the five films on your list. I always enjoy and appreciate hearing your opinions and recommendations.
Great video as always Mike! I havent seen any of this films, but have heard about them. I also like Andrew Haigh, I will Review his film 45 Years next week.
Welcome back, Michael! Hope you've been having a wonderful summer holiday somewhere warm and bright :) Speaking of that...did you enjoy living in Spain? How long did you live there? Thx for the tip on Nomadland...I've had this on the back burner for a while now, for the very fears you expressed, precisely. Will now front end it. I thought McDormand was gripping in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MO. I'm becoming a huge Martin McDonagh fan.
I was in Spain for a year as part of my uni course. I lived in North Spain, or Espana Verde! In Oviedo in Asturias. (As featured in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona) I didn't enjoy it properly at the time because I was a poor student and a bit homesick, if I'm honest. I don't think I was mature enough at the time (when I was 20) to really appreciate it. But looking back, I learned a lot from it and I'm really glad I went.
@@michaelbartlettfilm I can relate to those sentiments. My Global Markets Europe M.A. program through Syracuse University had me in London, Geneva, and Florence for almost the entirety of 2000. If only I could do that period over as my more "mature" self haha
I don’t know why I thought Victor Erice had passed away but I guess thought he had, I adore the Spirit of the Beehive - it’s the best film about childhood imagination ever made so I was so excited to watch “Close Your Eyes” and it lived up to expectations and then some.
Great to hear from a fan of this movie. I feel it had a bit of a muted reception in the UK. But definitely one of the loveliest films of the last few years.
man our tastes are always overlapping in unexpected ways. almost scary similar despite me being a 31 year old american. love the alpinist and meru. also love alex honnold but thought free solo was a touch overdone. still good though and need to rewatch some day. close your eyes and evil does not exist have been near the top of my list of anticipated new films this year. havent seen them yet, but hopefully soon. still havent seen nomadland either but loved the rider, completely caught me off guard when it came out in theaters. i saw it on a whim and glad i did -tom/djpinecone/whatever else name ive posted on here
I went to see a gala screening of Free Solo, where Honnold was the special guest. Quite a character in real life. Very confident, good interviewee. It was interesting to see him as one of the talking heads on The Alpinist.

Brilliant film, with fantastic performances from Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. Look forward to your review!

@@frankb821 I know, right? Wow, though, what a trip!
@@michaelbartlettfilm It was the cat's ass, but I wish I'd have spent less time in the pubs and more time exploring local cinemas
