    Very good critic of this great movie. The film deserves the praise you give it. This film like many of Val’s films sticks with you. There is always this feeling of having just watched something full of deep meaning, symbols and messages. The films either have so many of these messages or they are so ambiguous that you feel compelled to solve them as if a prize could be had inside a cryptic Chinese box puzzle. One thing I love about all Val’s films is there is almost always a walk or journey that must be taken by someone who is always alone. These long atmospheric and frightening walks always take place in the dark with no dialog and lots of sinister but natural sound effects. In IWWAZ film it’s the long walk through the sugar cane. Cat People was Alice’s walk to the bus stop. Seventh Victim, Jacqueline’s city walknafter an evening with the Palladists. The Lepard Man, Teresa walks across town for corn meal. In Bedlam it was Nel’s walk through the asylum. Curse of the Cat People, when Amy runs away from home and her curiosity about the “big house” etc.

    A little known fact regarding one of this films cast members --- Erford Gage, who plays the young lovestruck Poet would tragically die less than 2 years after this film's release. He lost his life in service of his country (and the world) battling Japanese soldiers in the Philippines during WWII. The films opening quote _"I run to death and death meets me as fast and all my pleasures are like yesterday"_ could very well have applied to him --- tragic foreshadowing perhaps?. He was quite good and memorable in the part as were most of this fascinating films cast. May he and all the rest of them, now all gone, rest in peace.

    Hiya, for years, on and off, I've been trying to remember a kids TV drama from 1975/6/7 about a small group of school friends that collected litter in the local community. It must have been a bit more exciting than that and may not have been the subject of every episode. I seem to think it had some quite distinctive theme music, something by Prokofiev maybe. I'm 57 now and have no idea why I keep thinking about this program. Have you any ideas what it might be?

    "Broadway Danny Rose" is the best film of all time and especially for Thanksgiving. I want to add a couple points about films (which are tied for #2 on my list} so overlooked and undervalued, even from devoted fans: Deconstructing Harry, a scathingly hilarious film where the artist gets his revenge on everyone who has done him wrong, including himself -- the interplay between his fiction and real life is incredibly brilliant and imaginative -- and it has the brilliant line, "Tradition is the illusion of permanence." Stardust Memories was always a quirky, oddball film, until I finally realized the conceit: the film we are watching is actually a screening for all the principals of the film-within-a-film at the center of the film -- once seen this way, it is the biggest mind-fuck of all his works.

    I enjoyed your summary of Ozu's work, - I knew nothing about him until I discovered his post-war films on Prime and watched every one. I like his films very much and your commentary makes me appreciate them even more. And I agree with your Top 10, WITH ONE HUGE EXCEPTION. Sorry Criterion and Letterbox, and in the spirit of fun debate, this mundane midwesterner thinks Good Morning is lousy (I gave it a 4 on IMDB). I never saw "I Was Born But," but I think your short description of that 1930s movie may have added more luster to your opinion of Good Morning than it deserves. Anarchic kids (prewar) who find out their big bad dad is a toady adds a critical dimension that Good Morning completely lacks. These kids aren't anarchic, they're bratty baby boomers. There's no depth to any of these characters as there is in all the rest of the films you list. It's boring, tedious, and tells no story other than in the 1950s Japanese kids were turning into as big a brats as their American counterparts. I read that Ozu called this a slapstick comedy. Uh huh - I bet he was a barrel of laughs at parties. He can do subtle humor perfectly, slapstick - not so much. The fact that the running "big" joke of the movie is about wet farts !?!, - this movie is as deep as a petri dish. Think about what you're really saying. There are no fleshed out humans in this movie. In his other movies he could give one of his actors 2 minutes and they could be brilliant. Never here. You seriously can't say every movie he made is a masterpiece. That can be said about no one. I'll watch the rest of his films over and over. Pair this with Jacques Tati and I wouldn't need to leave the couch. Speaking of Tati - I find the scores of Ozu's movies to be very similar to Tati's, that little bouncy French postwar music. I've re-watched it - I don't get it - it turns from a building into a robot?

    • @michaelbartlettfilm
      @michaelbartlettfilm 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ha, ha! OK, fair enough, we'll agree to disagree on that one. I always saw Ohayo as laced through with melancholy - perhaps I've been reading too much into it or been in a bad mood at the time! Whatever, I still love it.

    Spot on analysis and but how do you best 'Dirty Harry'..? The last two films became, as you say, another in the long line in the franchise; 'when is the moment Harry is going to pull out his .44' and plaster the gangster all over the wall? In the last film, Harry gets so bored using his pistol that he nails the baddie with a very phallic weapon, a massive harpoon... of all things !! Jumping the shark? Very much enjoying your videos, your enthusiasm and immense knowledge; keep them coming!

      Thanks, Andrew! Clint always keeps the films amusing, but the last two especially are pretty bad. And I miss the 70s-ness!

      @@gregoryfilms9405 I still haven't seen that movie! Many people have recommended it to me. They seem to think it's something I'd like... I'm not sure what to make of that.

    Great that you include EDGE OF THE WORLD in you top 10...a wonderful little film. I don't dispute your admiration for BLACK NARCISSUS, though I guess I'd have BLIMP as no.1 and I'd have THE RED SHOES above A MATTER OF... that one doesn't work well for me...And I love PEEPING TOM, but not sure where I'd place it myself, certainly in the top 3...as always I like your thoughtful comments on them all
