Freddie was so impressed by the Pavarotti's control of his voice and no wonder....This is beautiful! In fact, Freddie went to opera one night to see Pavarotti and then, unexpectedly, he heard Montserat for the first time and his jaw just dropped (by his p.a. Peter Frestone words :-) That's when he said about her "I just heard the most beautiful voice in the world!" Pagliacci is a sad clown who is in pain because his wife cheated on him, if I remember correctly, so, yes, you felt the right emotions. Enrico Caruso was famous for "Pagliacco" from the beginning od 20'th century but Pavarotti is a master of voice and acting on a unsurpassed level, I think..
Pavarotti is great but he did not have the right voice for this aria, it was written for spinto. Mario Del Monaco has many amazing versions of this aria. But I think the one who really captured the emotion the best is Franco Corelli.
Your correct about the story of the opera. The aria is also about how he has to put on his costume and makeup and happy face for the audience while he suffers a broken heart/nervous breakdown.
Oh what a great reactuon HAP. I just love PAVAROTTI he is my favorite opera singer. I didnt know that this song was tied into FREDDIE'S song ITS A HARD LIFE. Wow what a performance by the GREAT LUCIANO PAVAROTTI. I could listen to him sing all day. Thank you HAP. Take care your girl, QUEEN BEE.
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE. I AM AWARE FREDDIE IDOLIZED MR. PAVAROTTI. DID NOT KNOW THAT PORTION OF THE SONG WAS THE BEGINNING OF QUEEN5 SONG ITS A HARD LIFE..LEAVE IT TO FREDDIE!! THANK YOU HAP FOR YOUR VERY INSIGHTFUL REACTION!!❤🙏
The meaning of "The show must go on" and "Vesti la giubba" is very similar. The clown (Pagliaccio) has always to be funny on the stage even if he feels sad deep in his heart. You already felt the meaning of the aria and the strong emotional expression of Pavarotti's unique voice. If you like to see him act and to have the English subtitles then watch this version: th-cam.com/video/ZzUJ8Hf0hm4/w-d-xo.html
Thanks Hap, nice that you have got to what many would say was the greatest tenor of a generation. I saw him on a T V performance with Joan Sutherland, in aAustralia, when I was a child. Have been in love with him ever since. Yes Freddie was very classically influenced Xmas you can hear in his compositions.
Gets right to your soul....just beautiful....I grew up listening to my dad playing Caruso and loved it even as a child....not everyone loves opera but i do♡
Wonderful. Thank you. Pavarotti was understandably considered to have been the greatest operatic tenor in the recent past, with Enrico Caruso being perhaps the greatest of all time. But the one chosen for the title role in the movie, The Great Caruso, was Mario Lanza. That was way back in the middle of the last century, when Lanza was a movie star & the one who introduced me to opera. I loved his movies & used to save my money from working in the ice cream store to buy his records, 45rpm singles on vinyl. He is still my favorite. Even Pavarotti admired him. This aria was in the movie, and you can find it on TH-cam along with many others. His voice was a bit more mellow than Pavarotti's, and more pleasant to my ear. You might enjoy giving him a listen. He died way too young. But for the greatest listening pleasure, go look for La Superba, Freddie's duet partner Montserrat Caballe. If you start with Lascia ch'io pianga from Handel's Rinaldo, sung when she was quite young, you might end up listening to her all day, every day. Simply sublime!
I am so glad you did this reaction! Freddie as a composer drawing from various operatic sources is like a poet making allusions to classical poems - another layer of meaning is there if you can "catch" the reference.
You should check the final chapter of the story: when the clown faces his wife during an on stage performance and lets all out his anger: No, pagliaccio non son! Se il viso è pallido è di vergogna e smania di vendetta! Transl: No, I'm no clown! If (my) face is pale that's for shame and lust for revenge!
Luciano Pavarotti sang Too Much Love Will Kill You with Brian May (Roger on drums). Very moving, very powerful. Here's a link to it: th-cam.com/video/C7FGPIRJx6I/w-d-xo.html
Luciano Pavarotti is amazing, 100% in my list of my favorite singers, best and strongest male singers next to Freddie Mercury and Ronnie James Dio. Yes it is weird comparing a Opera Singer to 2 rock/metal singers but I mean still, these 3 have one of the strongest voices on earth.. Yes hap your pronunciation of Pagliacci was way off but no worries xD. You need to see Nessun Dorma performed by Luciano (Link for the performance th-cam.com/video/cWc7vYjgnTs/w-d-xo.html ) , its to me THE perfect Opera song. Its so dramatic and yea all I can say to that is Eargasm. Pavarotti, Freddie and Dio are incredible in singing with emotion they sell it very well, thats another thing that makes their singing so great. If you wanna hear Dio sometime too then you should react to Rainbow Mistreated live in Munich 1977. Never heard such incredible Vocals by Dio as on that song. Dio learned singing by himself just as Freddie Mercury (Dio played the trumpet as a kid so he kinda had an advantage in learning singing by himself since he knew how to use his breath correctly. Not saying that Freddie didn't know, what im saying is the breathing part in singing he learned through his Trumpet playing). Dio is a very awesome frontman and the most legendary Metal singer, he could sing not only high but very clean and raspy too whenever he wanted he could just switch between Raspy and clean, sounds like heaven. The band Rainbow is a British Rock band formed by Legendary and smooth Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, he used to be the guitarist of Deep Purple. Mistreated is also a Deep Purple song which Ritchie wrote but in my opinion its performed much better by Dio on vocals (personal preference) And on Drums the legendary Cozy Powell ;). Rainbows early days were just faboulous. Great Reaction, loving Pagliacci very much.
Hey Hap, great to see you doing these reactions, first person to react to Corelli that i am aware of, that being said you must check his version of this. Better yet listen to Corelli sing " E Lucevan la stelle live in parma version, I could go on but have no words, you'll see what i mean.Keep these coming!
Awesome, reaction as always! The aria/song is Vesti La Guibba, from the opera Pagliacci. I am so glad you have listened to this aria, it is a good progression! But Pavarotti's version is universally known as not being one of the best in opera circles. He had the wrong voice for this aria. He is one of the best lyrics tenors of all time. This aria is not meant for a lyric tenor, it requires a real powerful voice. So please even if you do it in your own time listen to Mario Del Monaco - Vesti La Guibba th-cam.com/video/kgTPgl0U6hk/w-d-xo.html or Franco Corelli - Vesti La Guibba th-cam.com/video/RaOtgD0xxy4/w-d-xo.html. These two version are seen as some of the best versions available, they are far better then Pavarotti's version because they were dramatic tenors with far more powerful and bigger voices. Pavarotti pushed his way into these heavy roles because he was tired of Lyric tenors roles. Lyric tenors roles are usually young, sweet, innocent, heroic types of characters. While dramatic tenors get to play far more complex characters because it suits their voices. Pavarotti had the clout to do it, and I understand his dilemma, he did not exactly fit into these young characters as he became older, but he has become so well known that people often don't realize this problem. This role was specifically written for a spinto tenor, Franco Corelli was a spinto tenor, Mario Del Monaco was dramatic tenor. Freddie made his version of this part 3 semitones higher then the original. Personally I believe there is a part of Vesti La Guibba in Bohemian Rhapsody as well. It is story of a clown who's wife cheats on him, he is having a metal breakdown but he still has to put on his costume to perform. "Scaramouche will you do the Fandango?". Scaramouche is a clown, so you are instructing a clown to do another dance. There is a similar theme in The Great Pretender as well, "laughing and gay like clown". Of course Freddie covered that song, it was obviously an idea he thought about.
Can I suggest another extraordinary opera aria? Te Deum da Tosca, by Puccini. The whole story of Tosca is incredible, there is all the drama: death, deception, rape, hatred and love. A masterpiece of letimotiv. In this aria the evil Scarpia weaves his net, his plan (I have two aims), in order to possess Tosca. Scarpia is in church and his wickedness grows in anticipation of the murder of Tosca's future husband (Cavaradossi) and at the same time the rape of Tosca herself. At the same time as he prepares for the Te Deum in church he reaches the apex of his wickedness with the beginning of the te deum. Completely absorbed in his wicked eroticism, he forgets what's going on. And he wakes up, taking up the te deum itself as a typical hypocrite. And the final set of sounds and chords is the accompanying sound, which underscores his evil presence. All of Tosca, with her story, is a masterpiece. th-cam.com/video/cvOaQetcj8w/w-d-xo.html
My friend go to the opera live and observe the magical spectacle. There is nothing in performance that matches the sets, costuming, and sense of drama that is displayed by the Opera.
Pararotti is playing a clown, He is about to go on and perform, but he has just learned that his beloved wife is cheating on him. He is singing (basically) put your costume on, Clown, the people must have their entertainment for which they have paid you. Your heart is breaking but you must go on and perform. Laugh, clown, laugh.
Pagliacci: Pa li a cha This gonna blow you away. There is a version with lyrics. Try Vesti La Giubba, It's the same song with lyrics and his actual performance. Watch that and you will find out why it reminded you of the Queen song.
I appreciate you reacting to Vesti la Giubba instead of Nessun Dorma like every else does. Not that I don't love Nessun Dorma. Here's a live version. th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=pavarotti+vesti+la+giubba
Wasn't He So Utterly Great? The voice of the 20th century. Thanks for your reacy
The ending he's crying! That's why you don't see him ..breaks your heart ❤️🇺🇸
So happy your doing this.♥️
Magnifico Pavarotti!!👏👏👏Great reaction Hap!

**Zenobia** I have to disagree there. Even though this aria was meant for a spinto, Pavarotti did the role perfectly.
great line, emotion, soul, tecnic, range , all inside the stage
Oh what a great reactuon HAP. I just love PAVAROTTI he is my favorite opera singer. I didnt know that this song was tied into FREDDIE'S song ITS A HARD LIFE. Wow what a performance by the GREAT LUCIANO PAVAROTTI. I could listen to him sing all day. Thank you HAP. Take care your girl, QUEEN BEE.

What is it always Pavarotti? He was not the only tenor to sing opera. He seems to be the only one who appears on these reactions.

Pavarotti was legend when he lived and he will always be. I’m not some special opera lover but his voice touches the soul.
He was the GREATEST VOICE OF OUR TIME.

"ridi del duol, che t'avvelena il cor! Dramatic! Absolutely!
Thank you Hap- stunning!
Pavarotti was the best
Un grand moment . Merci
The best opera singer of all times! You should hear Nessun Dorma

Plz reaction to Una furtiva lagrima -Di Stefano !!!! You would love it
a lot of great performers of this aria. I love pavarotti, but look at others. Di Stefano, Mario Lanza, Mario del Monaco , Atlantov , Corelli, Caruso.
I am also a big Paverotti fan, but you should also listen to the Corelli version.
Mask of harlequin
I appreciate you reacting to Vesti la Giubba instead of Nessun Dorma like every else does. Not that I don't love Nessun Dorma. Here's a live version. th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=pavarotti+vesti+la+giubba
Pavarotti es bueno indudableme pero Mario Lanza la canta mucho mejor.
Unfortunately for Pavarotti, this role is not for his voice.
