    Finally, the Slider has made it to Retro Bassin. It’s literally the do-nothing method. The little inflections in the rod tip while you reel are all the action it needs. You really need the watch the videos of Charlie Sr. explaining the system. They’re not great quality but they were originally on vhs. Here is a link th-cam.com/video/ZTxY7mColgI/w-d-xo.html

    Slider worms work pretty much all the time. Being they are old school you need to sharpen the hooks on the slider head jig. They are so easy to use it takes patients to reel slowly as in super slow imparting no add action to the worm. Jerking on a hit is not a good idea; instead just reel tight and set the hook using a sweeping stroke. I took a girlfriend fishing that never had gone fishing; I gave her a slider 4-inch worm and spinning rod. She continued to catch so many fish I didn’t have time to fish much myself. These little worms work best in clear open water. I believe they are the best lure to learn how to fish deep water too. Ring worm grubs work really well too. I met an old guy at the boat launch leaving as I was about to launch my boat. He looked at all the different rods and lures in my boat. He laughed and said; come here; he opened an ice chest; inside were two big bass, two nicer big walleye and a tank size crappie. He showed me two spinning rods with slider heads tied on and nothing else in his boat. He said son; you want catch fish or play in the water? I didn’t have an answer for that one. I got some Charlie Brewer Slider Head worms. I still play in the water but; if that isn’t working out come the slider heads.🦉

    I used to read "Fishing Facts" magazine when I was a kid, and I remember when Charlie Brewer joined their staff and starting writing articles about his "do-nothing" style of fishing with the Slider worm. Charlie Brewer always said that no matter how still you tried to keep your rod during the retrieve, your inability to keep it perfectly still would impart all the action that was needed. He used the worm at all depths, including quite deep for his primary quarry, which was smallmouths in steep-edged reservoirs in Tennessee. He described the flat tail of the worm as every-so-slightly fluttering on a super-slow retrieve, just like the only part of a bait fish that seems to move is the tail fin as they slowly coast along. Thus, I'm not sure if that tail is supposed to be horizontal as you were saying. It might be that it is supposed to be vertical, though I have a hunch it won't matter much.
    I've only watched a few of Roland Martin's videos but he's a big proponent of keeping the rod angle high so that the angle at which the line intersects the rod is close to 90 degrees, as that puts the mechanical advantage in your favor, not the fish's, when it comes to which of you is the first one to become aware of the pull from the other end of the line.
    At "Fishing Facts", Charlie Brewer was known as "Tennessee Charlie" because they already had a writer named Charlie Richie who was known as "Texas Charlie". Texas Charlie was a huge proponent of extremely heavy tackle and early in his writing career at Fishing Facts he said he knew what worked and what didn't, and no one could ever land bass in his waters with more standard tackle (and especially not ultra-light). He really had a macho attitude about heavy tackle. Then, Texas Charlie spent a day fishing with Tennessee Charlie, and he wrote an article saying his eyes had been opened and that he would no longer be the stubborn know-it-all about heavy tackle that he had been before. He said that the ultralight tackle and do-nothing method of Tennessee Charlie had worked far better than he ever could have imagined.

    Dang son. That rod bending reminds me of my ugly stiks!

  • @richardjohnson4238
    @richardjohnson4238 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    First. Sharpen your hook. If it will slide over your fingernail, it's not sharp. It should dig in with just the slighest bit of pressure. With a sharp hook, all you need to do to set the hook is lift your rod tip with a slight snap. I used 6-10 pound line. Reel it slow. If you think you're going too slow, slow it down dome more. The fish will tell you what you what they want. A "bump bump" strike is usually a bluegille. A bass just takes it in his moth and moves off. If you take your time you can lead them to the boat like a dog on a leash and never set the hook. I've done it and had my partner net the fish. But don't worry about is a bass or a bluegill. Just "pop" it and find out. As I used to tell my partners, "You gotta take a lot of jerks to the lake with you."
    Also, I never used the drag on the reel. I'd tighten the drag down tight, then leave the anti-reverse off, and backreel the reel when I needed to give line. I felt I was a better judge than the mechanical drag. Never lost a fish that way.
    I am a disciple of the Gospel of Charlie Brewer. I probably caught more fish on a Slider than everything else put together. From 1 foot, to 20 feet, clear water or muddy, tidal river or lake. It mattered not a bit. My old license plate on my Ford Ranger read "Slidr Rig."

    Here's an old-school comment about your rod coming apart! In the old days, casting the top section off your fishing rod was a common problem. I read in a book from the 1940s (way before my time) that the easiest way to fix that is to pluck a hair or two from your head and drop it end-wise into the receiving half of the ferrule before putting the pieces together. The section of hair needs to end up being aligned lengthwise within the ferrule joint when the joint goes together. A single hair is usually enough, but if the ferrule is extremely loose, three might be needed. I have an ancient Heddon ultralight rod that had this problem from the day it was new, and this trick always worked perfectly. Nowadays, though, most guys have hair that's too short to make use of for this trick! Fortunately, modern rods are built to more precise standards and don't have this problem.

Especially if you work the worm point through the worm a few times to get the channel enlarged a bit and just tuck the point inside the worm rather than skin hooking. Even with a short fiberglass rod and mono line I'll almost never lose one if I wait until I feel the fish swim off to set.

    I grew up on Slider fishing in the 90s. It was the go to for Dad and I for bass in Texas. I remember him teaching me how to drag and slow twitch the pole, hold out for the pause, cause that's when the bass will hit. About 4 or 5 years ago I decided to reinvest my time back into fishing (like every weekend). Called my dad up and said I was outfitting my tackle and worm bag. Asked if he knew where to get slider hooks, said sadly no...we couldn't find them on any selves anymore and he mailed me the few hooks he had in his box. I looked them up online and found their web site..it didn't look like the new improved one they have up now. I bought like 2 or 3 of everything fearing they would never make it back to market. I have the NED rigs, the various Shaky heads...but the Slider is the Original and still performs like a beast! Last weekend my Yak crew and I hit Briery Creek in Virginia. Its loaded with standing timber. Had a Slider tied on...everyone in the group said your not going to want to fish that here...you'll be hung all day. I replied...its a Slider hook guys...it dont catch anything but fish. Sure enough...I was the first one on with a good little 3lb football, slow twitching a line of timber they wound get close to with their open hooks. For me..if nothing else it brings back memories of fishing with dad, and will stay as a staple in my bag of tricks.

    it's more a of a cast, trip the bail keeping the rod tip at 10 - 11 o'clock and let it glide through the water colum until it hits the bottom, drop the rod take up the slack and glide it through the water! keeping your eye on the line for any sideways movement or if the line feels heavy! take up the slack and sweep your rod! no need to cross their eyes! it'll set itself because of sharp thin wire hooks! as Charlie states in his book! when he explains how to take a worm out and hold it between your pointer finger and thumb and notice the only movement is the slight movement cause by your heart beating! that's all the action needed! it's more deadly when it's just gliding through the water! it's a finesse bait! that produces large fish on heavily fished waters! especially on these new braided lines! thin as sowing tread but strong as steel! especially with a 6' fluorocarbon leader 2x lb of the main line!!

    Wow, just found this video by accident. Now I'm going to address the obvious. You are not really fishing it wrong. Charlie Sr made the concept in order to fish it differently, actually like a more natural approach. I personally use them when I fish bridge pylons. That slider head you used is more for a 5 or 6 inch finesse style worm. Back when he made it,Creame worms were the hit. And it still works. Now I use the orange crappie jigheads and the black slider spider jigheads. I have used them in bank fishing with great success. Doesn't hurt to use a fish attractant on it to hide your scent. Spinning tackle is a must. Now here's a major factor..... Use 6 # monofilament line & set your drag loose. Use very little action to it as you possibly can. You will catch a lot of smaller size bass. But if you get a chance to fish from a boat under a bridge.... now that's where it really shines. Charlie Sr was a fishing genius in my opinion, God rest his soul. His book is the best book to read about fishing. I'm now in my 60s but I fished it since I was in my 20s. Charlie Jr is just as talented with his technique also. Believe me, there's days I caught more than 150+ bass. Some over 5 lbs. Thanks for sharing this video
    It brought back some great times fishing with slider worms
