Exposed eye configuration, use a loop knot. Boil them for 20 seconds, lay flat, baits will absorb scent when soft and cooled, they will harden back up a bit over time. I used Mann's Shadow before these were around. Eye inside the bait, tooth peg it, and clip peg flush.
I still use and really enjoy using the 6” and longer Sluggos. As a matter of fact they are a favorite lure in the northeast while fishing for Striped Bass rigged with a Carolina rig. A way to improve the action even more than already possible is to cut a very thin vertical slit all the way down the bait, 1/4” wide, about an inch behind the slots built into the bait. Cut a wooden toothpick to the same vertical height as the bait and insert it in the slot. Take the bait to the water and check the action of the bait close to shore making adjustments forward or backwards in the slot to get the best tail action or whip in the bait when retrieved, jerked, or twitched depending upon your preference while using the bait. You’ll be surprised when you see the improvements you can get from adding this to the bait. Once you get the action desired, put a small dab of soft bait glue or crazy glue on the top and bottom of the toothpick in the slot, only enough to hold it in place not more. That’s it! Hope you enjoy using it!
Good video .... good to see you I n the water for a change but one criticism I have is the way you hold the fish. The way you hold the fish especially a bigger fish horizontal will dislocate their jaw or even break rhem. The fish can't feed and can starve. Two hand them bro support their weight. Again great video. 👍
Thanks for the feedback. I guess we can always do a better job of fish handling. One thing you'll never see me do is keep bass in my livewell all day just for a thumbnail photo or strap a GoPro to the top of a 6 pounder's head for a few cheap clicks like others I have seen...
Gonna give your cadence a go on a fluke in the morning. A little different than how I do it and you were wackin em! Have a video on the original weedless wonder Johnsons silver minnow? Not discontinued but definitely vintage being around since 1928. Almost 100 years old!
When I moved to Canada in 94 ,never had been bass fishing one of the lures I purchased was a pack of Slug Go's, I never used them because this type of fishing was alien to me, however I watched the Pop R video you done with the rubber Pop R, and I tried the ones that I have had for twenty years, and caught Bass, so you know that I am going to try the same thing with the Slug O, great video as always and thanks for the encouragement to dig out the old tackle.
Nothing better than some morning Count Chocula, and some Retro Bassin on a Saturday morning accompanied by these two screaming 'fish on! everytime you hooked one!! 🎣🤠 Keep sup the great work and vids man!! I'd like to think that the old Cordell Huncho would be a nice deeper running crankbait to try. Also the old school jointed vamp or a jointed river runt. Those two and the segmented pieces do nicely on some of them semi agressive bass! Shoot now you made me want to hit the water!! Tight lines!!
Jensons had a great sluggo selection back in the day-They were my #1 creek bait around Austin/Round Rock in the 90’s. Good to see you back on the water. Bastrop is a great trap lake this time of year.
I remember probably in the early 90''s my dad bringing home the black with gold fleck sluggos.....and thinking this was the most amazing action I'd ever seen in a lure. Everyone hopped on the senko craze in the early 2000's and forgot all about the sluggo! I saw a Fishing With Norm video where he didn't even know what it was lol
I like the slug go as well but there's 3 bait shops within a 50 mile radius of where I live and none of them carry it. I particularly like the "Slug-Go SS" To me at least, it looks more convincing as something alive in the water. I can't find those either so I've been using just any generic straight tailed rubber worm and fishing it without weight. it's a similar effect but it's just not the same. unfortunately I'm too impatient to order my lures online...I usually go straight from the bait shop to the water so I got to have it right now.
Looks like a great day on the water! I highly suggest a twisty tail grub day!! such a timeless classic and it's still my go 2 on any day!! 😁 great video man!!
If you can get on a good topwater bite id love to see some old school jitterbug action. I also still use torpedoes with great success. I find whopper poppers can spook fish sometimes but the torpedo is more subtle.
That spinnerbait reminded me a lot of the Mepps TImberdoodle, have you made any videos on that? The action looks amazing but I'll be darned if I've never actually caught a fish on one lol
I grew up in maryland fishing the tidal as well but I moved to DE/MD border near the ocean and now I catch bass over 2.5lbs weekly lol it’s a nice change
Love your enthusiasm. I've never fished a Slug-Go. Will have to pick a bag of them up at Cabelas and give it a go. BTW, did you pick a winner for your last give-away, or did I miss it? Another great episode!
@@RetroBassin Sweet. I just went to the Lunker City website and picked up a classic t-shirt. They're running low on them and they're on sale for $10 apiece. Will hit Cabela's on Monday for a couple bags of Slug-Go's.
Good video there is no bad time for a slug go I have been using the Lunker City slug go for over 30 years with out a doubt the BEST jerk bait ever. My personal favorite is the 4.5 in all black rigged with an eagle claw 1.0 45 automatic
That is one heck of a question! My tendency would be to keep it dry, but the urge to give it a cast way overwhelm. In the end, I’d probably fish it…with the camera rolling.
The biggest bass I ever stuck was on a blue slug go…..she was probably a bit over 12 pounds….. got a long look at her while I was trying to wade out to get her off the top of the weeds. She made one last tail walk and straightened out the hook….a light wire 5/0.
Shew bubba grab them slug o's especially in black and come fish caddo lake, and that'll be as throw back as you can get. Caddo and sluggos is like pb and j, ketchup on eggs, like q good steak dinner..... Like seriously you say caddo ppl answer black sluggos on the trees!!

I’d love to see you do a slip bobber float and fly with some micro buck tails like 1/16th Spro but in a vintage way
I absolutely love this channel. Thanks to you I have started fishing with some older rods and reels. Keep up the great work.
Nice Blake! If you fish it old school, tag me on the Insta!
Love me sum pistol grips for kayak fishing!
More videos like this please. I love watching those Baits catch
I agree…those bass need to keep cooperating,
old school style!

Good fishing! 🎣
Thanks for explaining about rigging the hook with the rubber bait! 🎣

Love the slugos! I always have them in my boat, I also still buy those hooks.. they actually work really well in speedworms 🤫🎣
Love it when you get out on the water. The sheer joy is palpable. Great vid!
That’s cause I don’t publish the sheer misery of the skunks haha!
Got a couple of bomber rip Shad in that clear and blue they work

For a bait that made such a big splash back in the day, a lot of today’s anglers never throw a Slug-Go!
Berkeley Frenzy with the photo photo realistic perch pattern caught me lots of bass back in the early 90s
Those Frenzy bait were the bomb!

Well that was fun. You did good. 👍
Takes me back to 1991 when I was a 16 year old and my uncle had this new bait called a sluggo. Man we used to catch a lot of fish on those things.
Love your stuff, brings back memories, maybe try the ole Doug Hannon snakebait sometime?
