    Mate! I've started skating again (now 60) and these are the best how to videos on TH-cam! The way you explain things makes it so easy to understand. I'm going to get all those basics down that I never did as a kid before I gave up. Really good stuff!

    Josh when you thought me about the principles you mentioned here- specifically “throwing yourself instead of stopping yourself with the copping.” That was key and learning this brought me out of my plateau and now for real I get way more fun out of vert now 🤙🏻 best money I ever spent on that lesson

    Thanks for this video. I've been having trouble with stalls and backside 5050 grinds because I was trying to race up the transition but it makes so much more sense to pump up to the coping I'll definitely try this next time

    Dang!!! With how much goes into Backside 5050s I have gained a new appreciation for them and the skaters that execute them flawlessly. Novice question coming up. Do certain wheel shapes help or hamper ones ability to lock in on the coping? I've seen Spitfire Formula 4 Lock-ins or OJ Mini Combo wheels and they looked gimmicky.

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks Dean! That’s actually a Great question! Wheels shapes don’t matter much, people have preferences but in the big picture it’s just a selling point. Wheel size is what will help you lock in more 54mm and larger for transition, 56mm-58mm especially on pool coping and vert ramps. 💙🛹💙

    Hey JB,
    Love ❤️ all your clips. They are SO helpful. I had the axle stall drop in for months and then I ‘lost’ it 😬. In a crisis of confidence I now bail more than I make as something feels off, like I start to slide.
    I think my issue is largely psychological. But do you have any tips? Cues? Where should my weight be?
    Often I find the right cue and focus can cut through the fear.

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very common, remember lean in with your head into your pump as you initiate kickturn off the coping. And always make sure the inside of your back heel wheel is tight against the coping so you don’t hang up. 💙🛹💙

    Man, this is the best explanation so far :D
    Did it always wrong, i was standing always upside the rampt, then crosslocking and then droping in.

    Does truck size make a difference? I have Indy 169 and sometimes find it hard to balance if I have both trucks heelside, instead of cross locked. Would shorter trucks help or hurt? Indy 149s for instance?

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Truck size does matter when the trucks get really wide as that equals more leverage and I wouldn’t pass 159 personally but whatever feels best. You can cross lock if you like. Just focus on locking your back truck to heel side wheel. That’s what really matters. 💙🛹💙

    Thanks for this JB, I keep coming back to it, and am working to get that back axle locked in for the axle stall as to me it's such a major thing: backside slash is one thing but to raise up and stall on that axle?... wow I have to really understand how to do this!

    The "slow drop in" you're mentioning several times and doing at 5:00 looks quite different from a "normal" drop in. It almost looks like you're leaning backwards rather than forwards. Any tips on how to perform this without getting into a manual or slipping out?

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great question Henrik! You always commit to leaning forward, just don’t pump as hard when you drop in. Experiment with your pump power and notice the difference in drop in speed. Thanks for asking and have an awesome day 💙🛹💙

      Make sure you’re throwing your head and shoulders back as you kickturn on the coping to ensure your body and weight get ON Top of the coping. This is a main issue for most people learning. You will need to pump up hard and at the right time to get this consistent. 💙🛹💙

    A note on fear and skateboarding:
    I've been trying to 5050 for two years. Some days I can get them, other days, I just cannot seem to do them at all. It's a very tricky thing to get your board into position with your back wheel locked against the coping first. It's a feel thing 100% and it happens so fast that it's very hard to get a feeling of when you're in position with your back wheel. It's very difficult to judge.
    If you're experiencing what I describe, welcome to what it's like to be someone who feels a great deal of fear and apprehension while trying to do something that really requires one to be fearless. Like a child who hasn't hurt themselves really badly yet.
    When we are fearful and we judge wrong and are not locked in just right, the skateboard will slip out from under us and we will fall backwards and crack our head on the concrete. Even with a helmet on, we will have a concussion and not be able to skateboard for months or even up to a year. Once we get back on our board, now we will be sacred shitless to try any tricks at all and won't be able to make any progress with skateboarding after a bad fall, even if we can ride around on the board quite well on flat ground and on transitions and banks.
    We can learn how to knee slide, but the worst falls are the unexpected ones where the board slips out from under you, and you fall backwards onto your back, your head flies back and smashes against the ground. It causes neck and spinal injuries that you can never fully recover from.
    The bottom line is that skateboarding is not for people who feel fear. If you want to progress and get good at skateboarding, you must be fearless to a greater degree than you experience fear. If you feel scared at all, skateboarding is not for you, because it's actually dangerous to skate when you're feeling scared or apprehensive. Fear/apprehension and Skateboarding do not mix. You may be able to skate around the park and comfortably just ride your skateboard but you will never progress if you are feeling fear anytime you try something that you can't yet do.

    Your videos are bad ass bro. I hope you’re still doing these. So many kids and adults could learn from you. You were spot on w/ every aspect and you included bails etc. awesome. One thing I notice w/ my own kid is foot placement and keeping bent knees. He wants to go full bananas w/ duck feet and locked straight legs. So I’m trying to get him to just get comfortable riding learning basics like tic tac’ing w/ feet shoulder widt apart in pockets above hardware, w/ bent knees. To stay light footed on board. You got really rad videos of which I’ll share w/ him. Funny kids are so insta-gratification, and I tell him not in this sport my lil dude. You got to progress. Some do it quickly other take time. Just enjoy the freedom of skateboarding snd don’t worry you’ll get good when you get good. For now just ride & be free. Good job on your videos mang.

    I can cross lock (front foot toe wheel and back foot heel wheel), but when I go for front foot heel wheel, it feels sketchy as hell and like I am going to over rotate everytime...is that normal and just a feeling I will have to get used to? I feel like the cross lock is holding me back from 5050's and more fluid lines

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some people can rip with cross lock grinds and they can work really well on handrails so it’s a personal preference. I think both wheels against the coping works best for transition skateboarding, it allows you to hook onto the coping with both wheels to grind around corners, lean in to go to fakie, and just lean into the transition easier. To get both wheels against the coping, you can lean in a little more while you grind or point your toes down enough to slide your trucks into the lock in. Thanks David, please help me share this channel with your friends 💙🛹💙

    • @davidristic3800
      @davidristic3800 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SkateparkLessons Thanks man, the cross lock kind of pulls me off the grind and I end up riding on the deck of the ramp...but I have seen others do it successfully. It sounds like I have too much weight on my front foot, so maybe the double heel wheel would be better for me until I learn to get some weight off that front foot. I will keep trying to get comfortable with it.
      Thanks for the help, and your vids are by far the best....I can't think of anything I would suggest to improve the content, all bases covered man.

    JB!
    I want to ask your your advice, I hope you find the time.
    I'm struggling a bit with my bs 50-50s due to my very loose trucks. My heel wheel are locked in a wheel bite while I grind. I think it might be easier and longer grinds if I had tighter trucks so that my wheels could roll along? But I don't want tight trucks.
    What's the secret? Do people just push through and grind on their trucks only? I always thought its smoother with kind of balancing half grind/half roll when 50-50.
    Thank you for great teaching!

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question, you’ll need to practice pumping up and carving harder into your grinds and keep your head more over your back foot so your body weight pushes your grind. If you still have a problem, use that additional speed to let your head and body stay more leaned into the ramp so you’re more in a grind only and youre pinching on the heel wheels but they aren’t on the deck of the ramp to get wheel bite. 💙🛹💙

  • @_functionless
    @_functionless 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another awesome tutorial!!! this exactly what i'm working on. I've been approaching the ramp with too much speed. Now I will simply pump up at try to lock it in! After practicing on a slope, of course. Keep it up JB! lovin the locks dude!!!

    I've been trying to learn fifty fifty stalls fit a while now. One thing I noticed I was doing that stopped me getting into the stall was I wasn't keeping my front wheels up after going over the coping. I wad trying to get into the stall with my board closer to horizontal.
    Since I've been trying to keep my wheels higher I've been having more success.
    I've never seen anyone mention this. Maybe because it's so obvious😁 but maybe it'll help someone

    Hi! Most of the guys I skate with cross lock their grinds. Would you consider that a bad habit or is both heel wheels against the coping better technique?

    • @SkateparkLessons
      @SkateparkLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question,
      It’s just another way of doing it. You can do what feels best. Personally I think locking both works best for tight corners and allows you to come in fakie easier but there are many factors to take into account depending on what you’re skating and the trick. Cheers 💙🙏🏽💙

    Don't you get more stability by having your back heel wheel and front toe wheel locked in on a diagonal? I've just started getting these and it feels more locked in than both on heel wheels.

    • @SkateparkLessons

      Many people do the cross lock method on handrails, I find it best for heel lock especially for grinding around tight corners. It allows me to lean in way more. But it’s skateboarding so no rules, do what feels best for you! 💙🛹💙

Maybe better around curves and corners?
