@@spicysalad1 refurbished from Apple is $1599 for the M2 Pro. Yes more memory etc. don’t care about the extra port nor multi monitor support. I care about battery life and the screen. If the M3 is more efficient than the M1 (which works well for my needs) and all I want to do is get the better screen and have the card reader and have a unit that sips battery - my thinking is the base is just fine
I think replacing the 3rd usb-c port is a disappointing decision, all of the models should include 3 usb c ports and not have people more than $2k + tax just get that extra port and or performance. And note: If you have either the M1 or M2 chip models at the moment, I would NOT recommend upgrading to M3 unless you’re still in Intel BUT it’s really up to you. I went from the Interl MacBook Air to M2 MacBook Air 15 inch with 24gb ram and it’s an absolute beast and I love it !
ask yourself why? who is going to use that 3rd port? YOU are not m3 pros target demographic. apple knows what they are doing, they have access to consuemr data habbits and it does not make sense to put a 3rd port when 99% of users are not going to use it

Apple is advertising it as only a 22 hour battery and not a 24hr battery. It’s like they’re telling us not to buy it until the next model comes out with a 24hr battery. That way it can be marketed as a 24hr, all day machine on their next ad campaign. The next model will almost certainly have a 24hr battery.
When the 14” M2 MacBook came out I thought it was ridiculously good value so I got one, maxed out the ram and as much SSD as I could afford. A quantum leap, in performance and listening to criticism. I checked different configs of the latest out on the Apple Store recently and I was just like”why would I?”.
I have had the base model of this computer for 3 years, bought it for international travel and photography storage, and now want to buy another one. For "basic" non technical functioning this is a powerful machine.
The question you need to ask yourself is “What features are most important to me?”. Screen size? Performance for photo and video editing, graphics design and/or coding? (The performance of Pro and Max chips will only benefit these kinds of usage, especially where time is money.). If you’re only using a Mac for general computing (ie. Web browsing, email, spreadsheets and word processing, etc.), then the M3 base model or even a MacBook Air or M3 iMac should be plenty of computer unless you want to plug in more then one external monitor. All of the base model Macs have plenty of RAM and storage options for everyday usage. I suggest starting with the screen size you want to carry around and configure from there. My only criticism with this fine video of Greg’s is that Apple didn’t really lower the price of the base model MacBook Pro because they only offered the 14” or 16” MBPs with Pro and Max chips starting at $1,899 and they eliminated the 13” M2 MBP, which started at $1,299. So, essentially, the cheapest MBP went up $300 to $1,599, but you get double the storage and a larger and much higher quality display. Worth the increase for sure!
In Australia, the prices JUMPED for the pro / max series from $3199 AUD to $3499 AUD ($300 jump). The BASE model m2 touchbar 13” started at $1899. The New m3 14” pro (base model) starts at $2699 AUD……. That is insane. Makes more sense to get an M1 air base model or m2 13” at $1799 tbh
8gb wouldn't be a big deal if you could upgrade your ram for market rate. Instead, you pay 230€ for an upgrade to 16gb and another 400€+ to upgrade to 32gb, which is basically the bare minimum for any type of professional work these days. 650€ for 120€ of hardware, lol. A 2tb drive, extremely common today? +690€ for 150€ hardware. They are just completely insane.
Yeah it’s crazy. My windows machine has 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory that cost just under $100. It also has 2 gen4 2TB SSDs that cost $75 each. Thats $250 total. Apple wants +$400 to upgrade from 18GB to 36GB of memory and +$1200 to upgrade from a 512GB SSD to a 4TB SSD. Thats $1600 extra just to get $250 of hardware. $1600 is how much my entire 7700X + 4070Ti build cost, and it’s pretty high end.
At the end of the summer, I bought a refurb M2 MBA / 16GB RAM / 1TB HD. I wasn't sure when Apple would release the M3 lineup but I was tired of my 16" 2019 MBP and wanted something lighter. These specs are nice and if I was in the market today instead of 3 months ago, it is hard to say if I would go for the base M3 or not. A better screen and better speakers (MBA's are "ehh") might well have enticed me. Overall I'm happy with my M2 MBA and probably will wait for an M3 Pro Mac Mini just to have something on my desk with more power.
I have the base model M2 Air, and 8GB of RAM actually goes really far on Apple Silicon, it's a really great travel laptop that i can use for things like web browsing and light coding without issue. However, if you've decided 8GB is enough RAM, just get the M2 Air (or even the M1 Air!), and if you need more RAM, may as well go up to the Pro chip!
I have an 8 gig M1 MBA and frankly, I’m surprised how badly it bottlenecks. I would have expected the low amount of RAM to have an impact on performance (as in, long-running tasks take longer to run), but at a certain point it just starts stuttering and becomes very unresponsive (for instance there’s a huge delay when switching between workspaces). At the same time, paying $200 for 8 GB of RAM feels like a ripoff. :/
8gb is *really* light coding with absolutely nothing running in the background. Honestly, any decent IDE really swallows 4gb+ of ram for mid-sized projects. I tried to make do with 16gb for hobby projects and quickly realised that I was already at 100% ram usage before even compiling. My idle usage typically sits around 24gb with spikes to 32gb after I upgraded to 32 gb. At my 64gb station I regularly use up more than 40gb. A MacBook "Pro" shipping with any less than 32gb is a complete joke.
@@dubble You’d be surprised, is absolutely fine for any web dev I’ve done and even compile both XCode and Android Studio projects (I have a beefier machine in the house I use for proper work but I’ve been really impressed with the Air when travelling) The more ram you have the more your machine will use, so I think it can be a bit misleading regarding how much you need Agree though, you can’t sell a machine with 8GB ram and call it “Pro” in 2023!
I just purchased the 15" MBA (16GB/512GB) config yesterday at Best Buy for $1500. The reason I wasn't too impressed with the MBP M3 was my particular use case is the laptop will be connected to my monitor 70% of the time and only used as a laptop 30% of the time. The $200 price difference was hard to justify when I wouldn't be pushing the device to its limits anyway. Still exciting to see and it certainly is going to vary person-by-person which laptop is best for them
Just wondering what is happening inside the base M3 model. In the same 14' chassis it has one less fan (the fan occupies a lot of space) and a smaller battery. What is happening to all those extra spaces? We can see a significant weight reduction for M3 vs M3pro, but do they just leave that area blank?
why does everyone say that it costs 1,600 dollars when in Europe it costs from 2,000 EUR for a more basic model 😮 and then you upgrade it to 16GB of RAM and one terabyte of memory because a laptop must have that and it costs €900 more than in America, of course that is a catastrophic price and that is not a good offer at all 👎
What I am wondering is how dynamic caching will affect overall memory footprint. If you're not doing heavy graphics, then 8Gb might be feasible. Even with light gaming you might be able to let dynamic caching cover your slightly expanded memory footprint. This lineup is targeted at getting M and Intel users leapfrogged tyo the M3. This is why they really did not look at comparisons with the M2. I am actually holding for the Macbook Air or the iPad Air to get the M3. sometime next year I think.
The base M3 Pro would be my Go-To option, if I could configure it with more than 24G of RAM. I don't really need the CPU speed, but a lot of memory is important (for Lightroom). So because I'm unsure about how long 24G will be enough, I'm going for an M2 Pro Macbook with 32G.
I have a ROG Zephyrus G14 with 40GB of RAM, it uses 10-15 GB of RAM and 5 of 6GB VRAM on my bigger uncompressed RAW files i shot one day with A7R IV So i’m guessing a MacBook with 24GB is fine for photo editing Anyway, I will se the RAM usage of these Mac OS machines :)
It is confusing but this entry model is aimed more at corporate business who want the Pro name. It's still got the gorgeous screen, ProMotion and the 6 speaker system. Global Radio Group gives MacBook Pro's to its Account Managers, so this model is ideal. I have the M2Pro 14" with 1TB and 16GB of RAM. I love it but at the moment I use it for 1. Keeping my movies on 2. Safari browsing and 3. Apple Pages / Keynote. The Air isn't worth the money when you add a larger SSD option so the Pro is worth it just for the ProMotion Display and speakers etc. This is a lovely laptop for a student going to University for three+ years etc. Apple Silicon is beautiful though and I don't feel the 8GB of RAM is limiting with this architecture for the consumer that it's aimed at!
Thank you for this Greg! I've always wanted a MBP, but couldn't justify the price. I traded my MBA M1 for the base MBP. I'm just an average user, I don't need any external connections as such.
I think Apple missed a marketing/naming opportunity here The baseline M3 “Macbook Pro”, with its single external display support and 8GB of RAM had the opportunity to be called just the “Macbook”. This would have saved it a lot of criticism as to it being called a “Pro” while keeping the M3 Pro and Max as the actual Pro models It would have helped differentiate it from the Air as well, which would continue to be the thinner, lighter, budget friendly model It gives a clear direction for the lineup as the Macbook Air, Macbook, and then the Macbook Pro. Only downside to this would be the “Air” name being associated with “budget”… which doesn’t have to be a downside necessarily
Hi Greg, It's hard to say. In France, the MBP M3 (SSD 512 GB / 16 GB) CPU 8 and GPU 10 is priced at 2,249 €. The MP3 M3 pro (SSD 512 GB / 18 GB) CPU 11 and GPU 14 is at 2,519 €. Is the 270€ difference justified ?
Apple always puts their breadcrumbs to get you to upgrade to the next more powerful Mac / configuration. They don't want someone to just max out their MacBook Air for example.
I think there is a market for people who want the hdr screen and good speakers, but for 1600 bucks it should come with 16gb of ram. 8gb of ram at 999 in the air was already pushing it. they could have even used a smaller power adapter like a 45w. 70w charger on a m3 laptop that is likely only going to pull 8w is a bit overkill.
Not sure why all these TH-camrs keep saying Apple has lowered the price. They did not lower the price! Apple replaced the 13” with yes a better 14” laptop. In fact even the 14” PRO PRO is still $1999 and it’s kinda a downgrade.
Most people want 16gb of ram and are upset that they removed one fan and usbc for the base model and yet still want a cheap price, you shouldn’t be complaining cuz it’s a base model if you want all those just buy the pro, at the end of the end Apple is a company and they trying to make money so…
I have an m2 pro MacBook Pro on order with 32gb ram and 1tb. Should I cancel, spend an extra $300, and get the equivalent m3? The m2 has 200gb/S memory speed and has a proven track record. Why would the m3 be a better choice?
@adredy bruh. Apple does weird ram amounts all the time 18gb for the m3 pro so wtf are you talking about. In 2011 they had a 12g upgrade option before.

1. How much storage is used up by the system software? 2. Can programs be installed on external storage or only in the system storage? i.e., only data externally?
So yeah I'm an older demographic and I don't need this for pro use but if I was going to buy this... I would expect to have a pro chip not just the standard M3 chip
Hey there! Nice video. I would like to ask for your advice about a new laptop. In my country if i spec a 16gb +512gb 13'' MBA it is 50$ cheaper than the base M3 MBP. I definetly like the screen and bigger battery of MBP, but will it be as futureproof as the Air? I want to keep my laptop at least 3 years from now on. Thank you!!!
the base M3 Pro is just Macbook Air guts inside a Macbook Pro chasis. thats all. its sutiable for 97% of apples mac userbase. its a great deal, you get more ports, better display, longer battery life. its perfect for students or anyone who does not do "pro" work, which consit of everyone who is not a youtuber
I think so, apple silicon is pretty capable with 8gb of memory. For any serious pro level work like video editing or photo editing, I always recommend at least 16.
Do I need the M3 Pro for video editing or is the M3 good enough? My one (2018) is so loud and slow and also lately doesn’t turn on many times. It also has a wrong day and time, which I strangely can’t change.
I am currently using a 12" MacBook from early 2016, which is unfortunately no longer supported with major software releases. So I'm stuck on Monterey. It's on its last leg at this point since I've been using it each and every day for the past seven years. Battery capacity is practically gone, processing speed is very bad and it only has 8gb of ram. I plan to upgrade to the baseline M3 with no modifications. I don't do intensive tasks all the much since this is just my personal computer for work whilst I have a separate dedicated gaming windows laptop. Storage hasn't been an issue on my MacBook and I only ever really have 2/3 apps open at once. 5.53gb of memory was used as of typing this. I don't know how 8gb would run on an Apple silicon chip. Since I've never used a laptop with one before. Again, I rarely do intensive things like rendering. I would bump it up to 16gb for $200 more (I do have a $100 voucher). Then again, that does bring the price closer to the M3 Pro chip model that starts with 18gb of unified memory. But I don't want to spend more for a faster chip with speeds I do not particularly need, including it compromises battery life on the 14" model. Nor do I desire a bigger laptop like the 16" as it is both heavier and more expensive, of course. Mentally, I am not adamant on upgrading ASAP but I don't particularly desire to wait for the new MacBook Air either. So if anyone is willing to share their views on this, I would appreciate it.
bro 1599 now that’s a deal and even the exspensive ones are a great value i think even from an M2 Max you should upgrade to a M3 Max if you afford it ofc

The M3 is brilliant by the looks of it and I can see that Apple are going back to Steve Jobs style of exellence (I take my hat off). So long as us M1 and M2 users are not forgetting so quickly. Hint* I just purchased a 16" M2 MacBook Pro 3 month ago and I kind of feel robbed!
How exactly are they back to Steve jobs excellence? There is nothing here that wasn't expected for months except for them lowering the cores and memory channels on the m3 pro

So 1600. If that’s expensive, then fair enough. You can divide 1600 by 10 to get £160 per year. That’s how much it will cost you. P.s Thats how long this laptop will last you if you don’t abuse it. Longer than any other laptop. Which makes it one of the cheapest devices out there. Saying this is expensive is like saying a gym membership is expensive. Maybe so, but not for the return on investment. edit: i daily drive a mac mini m1 8gb ram with an apple studio display. If I can pay for a £1500 display, I would pay for an upgraded mac mini. 8GB of RAM on the base configuration is insulting, not to mention single external monitor support. The base model is "Pro" in name only.
But it's way cheaper. Are you forgetting that when you made your statement? Spec it with 16gig and it's still cheaper than the last iteration. What am I missing here and what are you whinging about?
@@leebeeskeeyou can get a m2 14 inch pro on sale for the same price as the m3 pro base model with 16gb
@@leebeeskee Exactly. It's a Pro "Lite" for people that want the pro features but will use it casually, not for "Pro" work.
I think for the power and performance - most average users should go for the base model. This is the machine I was waiting for. Been doing just fine with the M1 MBA base - but now more storage, better performance and that awesome screen! Will be buying one.
Wait a few months after the holidays and the refurbished base model M3 MacBook Pro will be an incredible bargain!
why wouldnt you get a used m2 macbook pro? it'd probably have better performance (m2 pro is probably faster than m3 base?), better specs, more ram, same storage, more ports, support more monitors, and be cheaper at the same time.
@@spicysalad1 refurbished from Apple is $1599 for the M2 Pro. Yes more memory etc. don’t care about the extra port nor multi monitor support. I care about battery life and the screen. So the M2 Pro model is $100 more than the M3 base on education pricing or $80 less if I bump to 16Gb.
YOU are not m3 pros target demographic. apple knows what they are doing, they have access to consuemr data habbits and it does not make sense to put a 3rd port when 99% of users are not going to use it
@@DanRustle they're not doing it because of consumer data habits, they're doing it to save money. why do you think they're only giving 8gb of ram? since people don't need more than 8gb of ram? of course not LOL, its to save money.

Do we need 24 GB ram ? What is your recommendation?
When the 14” M2 MacBook came out I thought it was ridiculously good value so I got one, maxed out the ram and as much SSD as I could afford. A quantum leap, in performance and listening to criticism. I checked different configs of the latest out on the Apple Store recently and I was just like”why would I?”.
Apple is so smart. They start the base ram 8gb. They know 90% of people will pay $200 for the 16gb version. Easy $200 for them.
smart or exploitive?
Exploitative. Smart would be exploitative in a way you don’t suspect it.
I need a laptop for entertainment, social media, docs/work, and sometimes photoshop / illustrator . What MacBook model would u recommend
I have had the base model of this computer for 3 years, bought it for international travel and photography storage, and now want to buy another one. For "basic" non technical functioning this is a powerful machine.
Just got the Mac book pro m3 base model and I love it. This is my first MacBook. 😊
Is it snappy?? I'm thinking of getting one.
The colors remind me of the plastic Macbook back in the day when the base model was white and the top-tier higher spec Macbook was black.
I was so confused, an M2 Mac with a Hard Drive

It’s not meant for the previous 14 inch users. It’s meant to replace the the 13 inch MacBook Pro
Compare it to the 13 inch mbp
I have the base model M2 Air, and 8GB of RAM actually goes really far on Apple Silicon, it's a really great travel laptop that i can use for things like web browsing and light coding without issue.
However, if you've decided 8GB is enough RAM, just get the M2 Air (or even the M1 Air!), and if you need more RAM, may as well go up to the Pro chip!
no one should buy a web browsing and light coding laptop for $1600, yes m1 air would be way better
@@dubble You’d be surprised, is absolutely fine for any web dev I’ve done and even compile both XCode and Android Studio projects (I have a beefier machine in the house I use for proper work but I’ve been really impressed with the Air when travelling)
The more ram you have the more your machine will use, so I think it can be a bit misleading regarding how much you need
Agree though, you can’t sell a machine with 8GB ram and call it “Pro” in 2023!
16GB is not pro. Pro should start at 24GB. 8GB is just offensive for anything 'pro'.
Still exciting to see and it certainly is going to vary person-by-person which laptop is best for them
Bestbuy has $200 off. See if you can still get a refund or return/repurchase
Just wondering what is happening inside the base M3 model. In the same 14' chassis it has one less fan (the fan occupies a lot of space) and a smaller battery. What is happening to all those extra spaces? We can see a significant weight reduction for M3 vs M3pro, but do they just leave that area blank?
why does everyone say that it costs 1,600 dollars when in Europe it costs from 2,000 EUR for a more basic model 😮 and then you upgrade it to 16GB of RAM and one terabyte of memory because a laptop must have that and it costs €900 more than in America, of course that is a catastrophic price and that is not a good offer at all 👎
I want the M3 Max but I can't justify the purchase.
I’m upgrading this month from my MacBook Pro 13 that I bought in 2015 to this MacBook 14. Almost 10 years, I think it’s time for an upgrade 😃
You’re wrong!!! It’s what the 13” would’ve been, just $100 price bump. The actual 14” is still starting at $1999.99. So only the base went up
What I am wondering is how dynamic caching will affect overall memory footprint.
Am a graphic design studen can I go with this laptop
The base M3 Pro would be my Go-To option, if I could configure it with more than 24G of RAM. I don't really need the CPU speed, but a lot of memory is important (for Lightroom). So because I'm unsure about how long 24G will be enough, I'm going for an M2 Pro Macbook with 32G.
I have a ROG Zephyrus G14 with 40GB of RAM, it uses 10-15 GB of RAM and 5 of 6GB VRAM on my bigger uncompressed RAW files i shot one day with A7R IV
So i’m guessing a MacBook with 24GB is fine for photo editing
Anyway, I will se the RAM usage of these Mac OS machines :)
In Australia the basic MacBook Pro went from $1999 up to $2699 don't know why it went up so much
It is confusing but this entry model is aimed more at corporate business who want the Pro name.

I did the exact same configuration as you @haroomvlogs5437. I pick mine up on Friday from the Apple Store.
I think Apple missed a marketing/naming opportunity here
The baseline M3 “Macbook Pro”, with its single external display support and 8GB of RAM had the opportunity to be called just the “Macbook”. This would have saved it a lot of criticism as to it being called a “Pro” while keeping the M3 Pro and Max as the actual Pro models
It would have helped differentiate it from the Air as well, which would continue to be the thinner, lighter, budget friendly model
It gives a clear direction for the lineup as the Macbook Air, Macbook, and then the Macbook Pro. Only downside to this would be the “Air” name being associated with “budget”… which doesn’t have to be a downside necessarily
M3 should have been an Air only processor. The pro and max models should've stayed at the 14 and 16 inch.
Wonder if I should look at this since I have a base m2 14".

Hi Greg,
It's hard to say.
This kind of video gives us information like “If you need - you should buy m3max, but if not - do not buy them”. Thanks, pall. Best advice ever 🙄

I think there is a market for people who want the hdr screen and good speakers, but for 1600 bucks it should come with 16gb of ram. 8gb of ram at 999 in the air was already pushing it. they could have even used a smaller power adapter like a 45w. 70w charger on a m3 laptop that is likely only going to pull 8w is a bit overkill.

the base M3 Pro is just Macbook Air guts inside a Macbook Pro chasis. thats all. its sutiable for 97% of apples mac userbase. its a great deal, you get more ports, better display, longer battery life. its perfect for students or anyone who does not do "pro" work, which consit of everyone who is not a youtuber
For a consumer device is 8gb of ram enough?
I think so, apple silicon is pretty capable with 8gb of memory. For any serious pro level work like video editing or photo editing, I always recommend at least 16.

speaking of Apple uncharacteristically lowering prices. can you compare the binned 14" M1 MBP to the new 15" MBA?
Do I need the M3 Pro for video editing or is the M3 good enough? My one (2018) is so loud and slow and also lately doesn’t turn on many times. It also has a wrong day and time, which I strangely can’t change.
If this was $1199, I would say this was a good computer…even with 8GB.
Just a single tab in Firefox usually gobbles up at least 50GB RAM even on a blank page so, well, good luck...
Still wished the base version came in the new black version
I’m still on intel 16 based MacBook 2019 and yet not sure I should upgrade

The maxed out 16“ is now 2.000 € more expensive than the maxed out M1 Max version back in 2021…so sad but nonetheless very tempting…so better be rich to afford this 😅
Not justifying, but the maxed out M1 Max had 64 Gigs of memory, which is exactly half of M3 Max. The price increase is imminent.
Do I get the new base model or last year pro used from apple at the same price, they are on sale rn for 1600?
1600 for only 8 gb of ram is insane
Should I get this or the m2 air with 16gb ram
The M3 is brilliant by the looks of it and I can see that Apple are going back to Steve Jobs style of exellence (I take my hat off). So long as us M1 and M2 users are not forgetting so quickly. Hint* I just purchased a 16" M2 MacBook Pro 3 month ago and I kind of feel robbed!
How exactly are they back to Steve jobs excellence? There is nothing here that wasn't expected for months except for them lowering the cores and memory channels on the m3 pro
Thanks for this intro comparison video. I can’t justify spending any money on a new or used laptop since I’m retired and don’t need great performance. However, it’s fun to see how these Apple chips are progressing.
