  • How to put on a climbing harness correctly is a crucial skill that every beginner climber needs to learn. We give you a clear demonstration of fitting a climbing harness and highlight the key safety points to ensure you stay safe whilst rock climbing.
We have focused on highlighting the key safety points for most modern harnesses. If you have a different type of harness please do ensure that you follow the manufactures safety and fitting guidelines.
Harnesses with a manual double back buckle should checked to ensure they are correctly doubled back once fitted.
Open buckles will make an "O" shape with both sides visible and Closed buckles will make a "C" shape with only one side visible once correctly doubled backed.
If you are unsure of how to correctly check your harness then please get appropriate training from a qualified climbing instructor.

In the labyrinth of prolix videos across TH-cam on the subject of harness fitting, this assuredly is the best video any user could have wished for. Well-done guys!

Hi Brandon, Any climbing harness sold by a reputable climbing shop should be safe, as long as it is fitted correctly. I would suggest trying to get to a local climbing shop to try some on and see what feels the most comfortable for you.

Help! I'm a fat guy, around 25% body fat. My waist is wider than my hips. If I tighten the harness around my waist it's naturally going to move down to the looser area around my hips (well below my belly button). I've always tightened the harness where it naturally wants to sit so it's never loose and I've never had a problem but a staff member at my local centre told me my harness was too low. I either have it low and tight or put it on high and it becomes low and loose.

Hi Richard Roberts, sorry to hear you’re in a bit of a dilemma! Both options have there major down sides in terms of safety.
Would a chest harness (in conjunction with your normal waist harness) help perhaps? That way you would have the extra tie in point to maintain a higher centre of gravity when weighting the rope which would reduce the likelihood of inverting.

Hi there, my harness waist band's ends do not completely touch once I have it tightened up. There's an inch to two inch gap between the ends. Does this mean the harness is too small?

    • @TheClimbingNomads
      @TheClimbingNomads  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stacy,
It sounds like it could just be the padding that is not touching together which is fine. As long as the structural webbing is correctly doubled back with enough of a tail, then the harness should be safe if fitted correctly.
Without seeing the harness though it's difficult for us to say if it is the correct size. The harness manufacturer will have a range of waist sizes in cm/inches which their harness will fit, so this should give a good initial idea as to whether the harness is the right size for you.
If you are in any doubt then do check with an experienced climber or even better a qualified climbing instructor.

@@TheClimbingNomads Yes you described it better than I did. The strap/webbing does go through and double back and has about 4 inches of tail. This is my first harness and I did measure before purchasing, that's why I expected to see the padding come together when tightened up, but it sounds like it does not have to. That's good because I really like the harness! I will also check with the instructors at my gym for a visual approval. Thanks for the video and info, very helpful!

Seems a little big?? Or mine is too small.... My straps dont wrap around that far

I'm quite little! I have had difficulty in the past sourcing XS harnesses with enough gear loops for a trad rack! The harness shown in the video is amazingly comfortable to wear and hang around in, but I do need to tighten it right up to it's smallest limit! As long as the belay loop can remain fairly central pretty much most harnesses have a decent range of circumference within them.

@@TheClimbingNomads Great to know as I am shopping for a new harness and would like to step up one size but was fearful that the little extra length was unsafe, keep up the great videos!
