The police forces were never perfect, there was always corruption and petty bullying, but I am just old enough to remember seeing the last of the old-school bobbies who rode bicycles and walked around the streets, and they lived only a mile away. It's hard to describe them to kids today who have never seen a real policeman. "Civilians in uniform" they were called back in the day. Now we live in a changed Britain and the old-fashioned policemen with shiny buttons and helmets have been replaced with paramilitaries.
