If you're looking for another cool project, I'd like to recommend a "Dolchstreithammer" (not least because it will be funny to hear you try to pronounce it). It's a type of warhammer in the shape of a fist holding a spike or rondel dagger, where the narrow end of the spike forms the spike of the hammer and the broad end forms the face. It seems like most real examples were made by casting the fist in bronze around the iron spike, since the shape is fairly complex. It would be fun to have another casting project, but it would also be a tremendous challenge to see if you could forge the shape out of a single piece of steel.

I’m always making dog cages as part of my job cause I’m a welder and I found the best way to stop the rattle from the sheet steel is to put silicone around where the sheet touches the SHS and that will take out 90%-100% of the rattle

if you really want to use steel, you needed to press a form in it to minimize flex. If you ever look at large vehicle panels with no support, they typically have an "x" pressed into them for rigidity...

Alec, just a thought but have you considered adding “emergency” doors to the top? That way if you are in a side impact crash that means your door doesn’t open you can still release your dogs. Hopefully never needed but maybe worth the modification?

    • @sta.x
      @sta.x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Good idea, probably unnecessary tho.
New cars are insanly solid made, to ensure safety for the passenger.
If the impact during an accident would be so hard that it deforms the whole car (side and floor panels) AND this massive crate made out of realy solid steel - there will probably be no dog left to safe.

    • @ezforsaken

Fun project! A basket top to the crates would be an excellent way to stow gear (etc). Will the door opening into the interior of the van be a problem, as the way must be left clear for the door to swing open, and the dog to get in (it looks like you're carrying a good amount of training gear and equipment.) Keep doing what you do!

I've been trying to model square tube frames with 360 and I believe it's a bit cumbersome. I need to model every tube model one by one (taking in account 45° cuts, it's a lot), and then duplicate, assemble, etc. It should be way easier with some sort of integrated module that would manage all this so that you just have to pick a model, set the size and orientation, and snap !

0:50 I can see you are viewing in "Parallel Perspective, this mode is designed for straight on views from front, sides, top... as it aligns everything directly in lines so that you can have clean views... but when you rotate it to any other angle the further away parts, that should be smaller, become bigger. Notice how the furthest corner is actually bigger than the closest corner. To fix this problem change your camera view mode to "Perspective." This is standard 3D view like in video games.

Wondering if he put the hinges on both the same way or an opposite directions. Both the same way you could lift the door off opposite directions. It'll never come off

On thought I just had having seen a number of different styles of Police dog vans that you might find useful - Have you considered making it so that those 2 that you're planning on having at the rear of the vehicle could also be placed on top of the front 2 - That way you have the option to either have them in the rear, OR have them on top of Yogo/Crazy's cages? Then you can choose what configutation to use depending on what else you might need to fit in the back of the van along with the dogs

Why no compound mitre joints? They would work really well for this project.

Just curious, why did you end up with one door opening to the side and one to the back? I would think it would be easier to have them both open to the back, especially if you were going to add other crates later on behind those.

To take the rattle out all you need to do is put some foam between the metal

Very inventive. This video was a 'crate idea'!

This is why you tack everything and then weld and move to another area to avoid over heating and warping

As an apprentice my first welding job was fabricating a jig to make dog cages almost identical to those. Then I made 200 of them...ahhh to be young again

Honestly spent too long wondering why you had doors on both sides until I realised the van has dual sliding doors! Never really considered that such a thing existed 🤣

Same here! To be fair, in his initial plan he said the main priority cage would be in the very back and the one towards the front (by the sliding doors) would be removable. So of course we assumed this was the priority one he was working on (which would require doors facing out the back.). He either changed his mind about where he wanted the main cage or screwed up and made the wrong one first, lol.

Yep I was confused too but you just catch a glimpse of the passenger side door being open when he opens the back doors near the beginning. (I also though that the dogs were going from a nice clear floor to having to lay over a frame piece when he started measuring up the doors on the side)
I'm not sure most vans of that ilk have doors both sides so I hope he doesn't need to change it any time soon. Having to open both side doors to load the 2 dogs just seems a faff too.
& As pointed out further down the comments if for any reason 1 side door is unable to be opened you can't access the dog on that side so an access hatch between the 2 sides would have been worth including.

God, I cannot watch people use parallel projection in 3D modeling software. It hurts my brain.
We spent hundreds of years mastering perspective in drawings and paintings and photography, and now that 3D modeling software is readily accessible all that is out the window.
    Good luck Mr. Steele.

Have you ever developed a gear tooth with just a compass and set square on a drafting board? You have got to admit that it is a lot easier with cad
