- Hello everyone,
As many of us expected, things unfolded exactly as predicted.
The mainstream media, Bollywood celebrities, and government agencies turned a blind eye.
Before August 2020, when I first wrote about this company, there wasn’t a single article or video addressing its flaws.
How could they all miss the warning signs?
Or is our system so flawed that it lacks the necessary checks and
balances to stop such a company in its early stages?
They ignored the issue until it was too late.
There was a time when NITI Aayog and Startup India showcased Byju's at events and on panels.
Even after the case, the Ministry of Education, instead of enforcing strict regulations,
chose a soft approach.
They formed a so-called "self-regulatory body"-the India EdTech Consortium (IEC).
Ironically, the same companies responsible for creating the mess were entrusted
to regulate themselves.
Parents have been reaching out to this IEC for months, seeking refunds.
And what has IEC done? Nothing. Not a single response, let alone action.
This year, the Ministry of Education introduced Guidelines for Regulation of
Coaching Centers, which laid down sensible rules:
No coaching for students under 16 or below Class 10.
Refunds on a pro-rata basis within 10 days if students leave mid-course.
No coaching during school hours to put an end to the dummy school trend.
And yet, what happened? Nothing. No state has implemented these regulations.
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again:
we need ONE SIMPLE RULE for Edtech companies-
FEES SHOULD BE ALLOWED ONLY ON A MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION BASIS.
This would:
1. End aggressive and unethical sales tactics.
2. Push Edtech companies to improve their education quality to retain students.
3. Give students greater flexibility in switching streams or
coaching institutes, reducing their mental burden.
In February 2022, when another Edtech company, Lido Learning, showed signs of
bankruptcy, I highlighted the struggles of parents and students.
These families had paid for multi-year courses.
Meanwhile, Lido’s CEO, Sahil Sheth, was off hosting parties in Mexico and Spain.
Families-some working as house helps or taxi drivers-
were left pleading for refunds. I tried to amplify their voices,but nothing changed.
Now, as Byju's faces bankruptcy proceedings, investors, creditors, the BCCI,
and tax authorities are all fighting legal cases to recover their money.
But what about the customers?
Over ₹5OO crores in refunds owed to more than 1 lakh families remain stuck.
Imagine the impact on these families. For many parents, education was their only
hope to uplift their lives. These edtech companies, dressed in suits,
walked into their homes and systematically shattered that only hope.

Lol. Back in 2013 I went to Akash Institute with my dad. In the main lobby they legit had a window with metal bars like it was some bank. My dad saw parents submitting thick bundles of cash into that window.

If the business is ethically wrong, what about this counsellor and all other employees who were ethically wrong as well? If an employee can do an ethically wrong job for his small needs, a big shot can obviously do the same for his big needs.
Don't always blame only the businesses and owners. Every employee until the very last level is part of this scam and destroyed many Indian middle class families, humiliated young kids in front of their parents, destroyed their confidence and spoiled the kids' lives.

Harsha, your father is a great wise man. He's getting good school education for you. Moreover, he's not falling a prey to 'money hungers' like Byjus. I am sure that with time you'll grow into a responsible human being.
He mentioned about Diksha app. He mentioned about 8hrs in school in comparison to 30 minutes of Byjus. Very intelligently he mentioned about value of school certificates (global acceptance & in job scenario). Because he is a responsible father he must be a responsible citizen & a responsible teacher. Respect to you sir.

Attacking the student for his knowledge for sake of money is the most disgraceful act I have seen.
Literally every Student counselor does it. It's like they are also illiterate when it comes to ethics.

Appreciate your hard work Pradeep. It’s really disheartening to see these companies try to make fools of the middle and lower class folks, for stupid offline courses, you can find thousands of videos on TH-cam, which is also offline, and can be watched anytime, any number of times.
On one hand I feel great that the company went bankrupt, but on the hand I feel sad for the parents who lost their hard earned money.

Its toxic cycle. The salesman will get fired/badly treated if they fail to sell the course. I have no sympathy for employees though, they are very well aware of what they are doing.

The same thing happened to me in the 5th grade (7 years ago). 2 people visited our home with the exact same pitch. I still remember the pressure they put on me so I couldn't answer their questions. We ended up paying 75k for a five-year course with a tablet. They still call for my younger brother even after multiple blocks. Absolutely pathetic.

They visited for my brother 3 years back , salesman was clearly mocking my brother's knowledge & telling him if you're studying like this you will end up in this kind of house too ( it's a 3000 ft home ) & I hated his audacity. My mother was being polite but I upright questioned him on his comment & asked him to leave. He called multiple times after that but none took the phone.

He confused the kid so much with fractions! Harsha was right about calling the pizza 4/4 because he didnt really shade any part. The counsellor then went on to say that 1 circle was divided into 4 parts that is why it was 1/4. How confusing is that!? This really seems like an unqualified person saying some random stuff. This is more bad than good!

But the idiot said something like they have to be equally divided parts or something like that, and said 1/4.... later said if his marks is 47/50, that's also fraction... what idiots, can't even frame their sentences correctly....
So sad... people get guilt tripped into buying the course. That blue shirt guy just went hell on that father just because he said he doesn't have the money to buy the course, I understand he would have pressure from the company for sales, but it's just sad in every way.

BYJU is the true representation of Indian society. People are ready to spend unlimited on children's education beyond their capacity. The unemployment rate is so high that people will do dirty work ignoring ethics. Govt sit silent. The company earned beyond what the true market size is from above combo. You did awesome job Mr. Punia even battling to the court. But what our society learned from all this? Nothing. Tomorrow if something else comes like this, did govt implement any safeguard? When I was in school they conducted a test and then they personally go to each and every students home to make the students feel that they are so below avg. students think that how came 2+2= 5 my whole life is a lie 😢
The question he himself asked why plants should not be kept inside , his answer to that was not complete/wrong.
The answer lies in respiration and photosynthesis both, during daytime plants respire and exhale Carbon dioxide, plants do photosynthesis and give oxygen
It is during night time photosynthesis is not possible due to absence of light hence no oxygen , but respiration by plant is still going on and plant is exhaling carbon dioxide like daytime.
Summary:
Daytime - oxygen(by photosynthesis )and carbon dioxide(respiration )both are given by plant
Night time- only carbon dioxide (bcs of respiration only)

exactly, the kid was right and the salesman confused him. I have come across such a sale pitch in person as well. The salesman asked these same questions, and whenever the kid answered the questions correctly he either tried to confuse them further or quickly moved on to another question without acknowledging that the kid was right.

In 2018, when i was in 8th class, i randomly logined to byjus to study.the next day these scums called my mother and came to my house.my mother is a single mother who had to take care of me and my brother and living in a rented house. This byjus dude came and he knew our struggles but still he was trying his best to sell a lakh rupees course to a kid studying in 8th class. And he almost convinced my mom to buy the course on emi. But my grandparents interfered and then we never took his call. We just dodged a bullet. Thank god this scummy company has failed. And i hope it never gets back up. And their owners to suffer like they made so many poor people into this debt trap

My friend who used to work in Byjus used to trick poor father and his son with stupid questions. Some of these parents are so much in poverty, they used to spend more than half of their salary for Byjus believing their child is getting good education. Just think about the money they spent on Indian cricket team and for Messi. Education company sponsoring sports team is the biggest red flag. He could have built free schools for underprivileged kids or gave away free books.

Yes, if you watch their free videos from any educator, they will call you 10-20 times a day to buy their paid courses, sometimes they call even after 9 PM.
Once I downloaded unacademy app and wanted to buy their plan but the payment could be only done by credit card for some reason so I dropped the plan because of that the guy said if you buy today we’ll give you huge discount but its only limited to today only then i thought no problem and left the conversation the guy literally called my at least 15 times every day for 15-20 days
meanwhile me took my daughter for a ice cream party for scoring 30 of 50 in mid term. I don't care about marks. let her enjoy life.

Why should any grade 6 student study for JEE? If you start your preparation from Grade 6, trust me, you’ll be frustrated and saturated by the time you get grade 12… Show your kids interesting stuff and some simple experiments if you want to increase their curiosity… Take them to national science center or other science museums in your district… Explain them how natural phenomena works (in simple terms)… Show them discovery channel, Nat Geo or History Channel… Teach your kid science not for a stupid competitive exam, but to increase their curiosity… Also, don’t force them to study Science or Math… Don’t force them to study advanced stuff, they have their whole life to learn it… If they are interested in other stuff, let them explore it… I get frustrated when I see pitches like these…

My father bought me byjus becsuse of me in 3rd standard, I didn't have any knowledge and was overexcited for the tablet only, and they came to my house for counselling, and asked me 9th standsrd questions, when I look back to it, they asked stuff about pythagiras theorem, value of pi etc TO A 3rd GRADER. And manipulated my parents into thinking Im not good in academics, I was a topper. But not a prodigy

Bro have been following you on LinkedIn from 2020, I warned many of my friends who were about to join Byju's as salesmen, I also stopped few relatives from buying these crap courses. Hats off to you, I remember how many threats you received and you were literally hiding in Bangalore. Pradeep Poonia proved one voice is all that is needed for making a change.

Harsha everyone learns at a different pace, never let anyone guilt trip you into buying some course that everyone says Will make you genius overnight. Best resources are available for free on internet now. My salute to your father. Sir, you protected your kid and yourself. Kindly spread the message to your relatives as well so they don't fall into this notorious money making scheme.
At the end of the video, you can see even even lower income families were targeted. Now BCCI is getting their money back, but such families have no voice in the system. We might never even know how much such families were duped, many of them are still paying EMIs and can't get them stopped.

@@poonia3.0 registering on unacademy is just headache , once they get your phone number they will start calling you 10 may be 20 or 30 times a day without shame to sell their courses and they don't mind the time may be morning evening or night. They just want to pitch their courses , this lead to missing other important calls as well for that number and they won't cut call or call back to complete their pitch uselessly ....and what else , even if you say directly that you are not interested .... They don't care

I worked at Byjus for a year as a teacher. This one time we were asked to talk to parents of children and give them their 'report card'. talking to some of the parents made me so sad to be working there. A lady told me convey the message that they should stop harasssing them for next installment of the fees. her monthly earning was 8000, and so was the monthly installment of Byjus. Imagine being the salesperson who sold them this deal, knowing her earning and number of kids. That was a depressing incident. i am glad i quit before they could fire me fro some bullshit reason. i have not even scratched the surface here.

This isn't sales at all. This is cross selling pro max without the actual sale of the service, which is good teaching.
I once joined Scalar academy's free session and they started torturing me by calling and giving lecturer for hours. Later I got angry and sent a mail to scalar team asking them to delete my number from their database. After scolding them a lot, I didn't get much calls from them. It was so frustrating. They were just trying to brainwash me to pay 3 lakhs. 3lakhs is not a small amount for a middle class citizen. When I said that I have other commitments, so I don't want to spend so much money now. He started eating my brain for some more minutes. Horrible. education system in india is a big scam which is a business now. They dont have any ethics
in 2020- i joined byjus as sales manager and i quit the job in 4days after seeing their pathetic behaviour towards kids for selling stuffs. i also told my sr. manager that he should also quit. luckily he listened to me. many wrong things happen inside their office which i dont want to mention.
Please mention what all happened in there. While govt agencies didn't keep a track record of the wrongs that happened, at least we can put it here. At Least a few people will read it and it would help someone.

My father went into the same trap and bought it for my inter bipc and in a month when i asked for refund they have not responded and later blamed us. I wish byjus gets destroyed and get what they deserved please god help me with this one wish

Unfortunately i worked in byjus as a counselor. But, i can proudly say that i have understood the whole scenario of content and marketing in a few days and i left it just in a week. They have created a content for say 10 rs and spent for marketeing 90 rs and wanted to earn 1000000 rs which our system doesn't require. Government institutions should have have interfered in this matter. Very unfortunate

In my 11th grade, I had also downloaded one of these apps (forgot the name but was one among byju's/vedantu/meritnation) and one of their respresentatives came to my house to sell me their course. I was performing very well in my coaching FIITJEE and was confident of myself. He came and asked me questions from 10th grade science/math (which I had forgot as I didn't study that seriously in 10th, just for boards rote memotization and naturally didn't remember the concepts) and I wasn't able to answer them correctly. He then demotivated me in front of my mom that I am so behind the curve and don't have knowledge to clear JEE and what not 😂 Obviously we rejected the course. 6 years later and here I am in my final year at IIT and I just wish I could find that guy again and tell him about this. The amount of psychological tactics these guys use just to sell stuff that too education is very unethical, I'm very glad that Byju's failed.

I was young like 13-14 year old . I was a poor student with no basics. I started using byjuus to understand the concepts but after 2-3 days of using they called me said they'll visit me . During the visit he did like a test and couldn't get correct all of them he said I'd need 3 years classes of it (8😮,9,10) to know the basics and be a bright student. It was 40k something rupees we finally paid it . What a waste
same for me, 5th to 8th, total scam, the tablet was so bad, lessons could be considered fine atleast for science and maths but nothing youtube didnt do for free, nothing requiring the tablet at all
For me it was 1 lakh, I am in 10th and I have left the cheap tablet to decompose. Sadly it doesn't.

Thank you for your support. I wish the government had taken stricter action against edtech companies selling long-term courses when the issue first came to light.
Even now, I hope this video reaches a wider audience, as we can only imagine how many underprivileged families are still burdened with EMIs for these courses, even after the company has ceased operations.
Sad to see that govt is not even trying to look into this issue. Like over one lakh families must be waiting for their refunds, thousands of them would be from really humble background as shown in the pictures at the end of the video and nobody is talking about it. It's not even an issue for mass media. When I initially raised the issue, media ignored that because they were getting advertisement budget from byjus and now when they started writing about it they are just focused on the financials and bcci money which got stuck, they are still not doing anything about the families. Its so bizzare that so many people were fooled and yet the entire system just let it happen and now wants to forget about it like it never happened.

Can anyone help identify the salesperson involved? It’s infuriating to think such individuals can get away with duping hardworking people while openly abusing them in front of their own child. I would do everything in my capacity to ensure he never gets hired anywhere in the corporate sector.
My brother got scammed by this company during COVID pandemic. He was studying class 10. They said we will refund the fees if you did not like the program. After 1 week my brother said the quality of learning they are provinding is not good. So we asked them to refund the fees. They did not refund in spite of giving many assurances and we were scammed by this fraud company.
That child will surely do something big in his life and make his parents proud,but demoralizing at this young age is bad ,i know there are poliecies to sell,he can guide the child so then they feel to purchase,just saying you dont know this you will suffer is kind of bad
from this an incident came into my mind. Once, when i was 10 or 11, i downloaded the byjus app since i got an ad from a shady website which would say downloading this shit would give me "gta v" on my phone. Then, i realised that this was a tuiton centre. These mfs disturbed me af after that. I knew i did not want any tuiton coz i scored decently in each of my exams. Then, they called my father and then they tried to show that i am still lagging behind and somehow they scheduled a meeting with me and my father(offline). But when the two "so called" teachers showed up my house, they were constantly trying to pressurize me.

My father was clever and didnt let me join as he has less money. I even had fights with my father for not joining in Byjus. Now i realize my father made a good decision.

The more I watch this video I can see that everyone involved doesn't have sufficient English language comprehension. I feel like if people could read and understood what's in a book we don't need these guys. There are some good introductory books with varying explanation , some are very simple and others are exact and detailed. Just fking books bro wtf. I would recommend openstaxs line up of free science and math books for anyone interested learning maths and science. Great explanation with ton of examples compared to indian textbooks that cover theory or just throw definition after defination
Many mistakes
1) Fractions : Pizza divided into 4 parts so it is 4/4 but the byjus guy said 1/4which is wrong
2) Photosynthesis: plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen but Byju's guy said the opposite, he said plants release carbon dioxide.
3) spelling mistake : Byjus guy wrote ' observe' instead of
' absorb'.
4) Rainbow colours : eaiser to remember as Vibgyor, Byjus guy didn't make it any easier for Harsha to remember he came up with the a random sequence.
