  • This one was a long time coming. Few months back, I was sketching on FamiTracker and I got this nice progression going. I figured I would follow through and make this on mmlgui.
    Thanks to Soulox and ctr001 for general feedback and figuring out the best kick drum for this track.
    Submitted to Chiptune Cafe's Growth Chipjam Originals category.

    This music sounds like you install a new extension to your Sega Genesis, and it'll load up its own bios to play this startup tune. (Similarly to how the SEGA CD Loads without a disc.)

    • @muscises1858
      @muscises1858  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      This is not a tracker program, this is a MML compiler. MML is different from trackers in that everything is typed in as text vs. using a visual representation of each channel's commands and note data. I appreciate the kind words, though!
      If you download the source code down below, you can see how everything was laid out.

    Holy smoke! The chord progression is very PC-98 and way groovier than any crazy jazz songs I've listened by far. Hope I can reach to this level as an amateur music producer.

    This is the first piece I’ve heard from you, but I’ve been listening to it nonstop since I found it. Wonderful noises!! For some reason, it gives me nostalgia for the atmospheric Wii/Wii U era Nintendo menus? I’m not a composition expert, so I could articulate why, but thank you for this tune ❤

      Thanks, funny enough Streets of Rage was one of the earliest influences for me to do music. I always thought Dance music was much more fun to write vs. Traditional music because of layering the parts over each other and the quick switch-ups you can do.
      You know what, because I keep getting this comment a lot I'm going to compile a playlist of my compositions that deserve the "sounds like Streets of Rage" comment.

    how complex is writing a macro for the driver in question compared to, say, a furnace to vgm to SGDK sample build pipeline?

    • @muscises1858
      @muscises1858  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Writing macros is not difficult if you look at them as like automation events on DAWs, but for registers. There are a few example files utilizing the feature.

      You can find me in the mmlgui discord server linked in the github repository:
      github.com/superctr/mmlgui
      Once you're there, you can ask questions on how it works, general support, or even learn about the world of MML. I will preface that this kind of stuff is much more diligent than using a music tracker, so it'll take some time to get proficient at it. Other than that, the community is excited to see you there!

    I see how you use the PSG to produce the cymbal sounds but how do you produce the drum sounds? I am thinking maybe the DAC but that would be horribly processor intensive. Can you briefly explain what the channels are and what the columns of data correspond to? I presume on the YM chip you need 2 bytes, one for the pitch and one for the envelope to define the instrument?

    • @muscises1858
      @muscises1858  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Drums were going through the DAC, and the reason why they sound so good is because the sound driver does a good job handling DMAs between the two CPUs.
      When it comes to how the channels are laid out in the test program, it's very tricky since some channels will phase in and out of the lower slots in the video.
      If you want to learn more about the technical side of the sound driver, here's the link: github.com/superctr/MDSDRV/tree/master/doc

      @@muscises1858 I can't really do anything with those files as I don't own a PC but is this a full genesis emulator with 68000 and Z80?

    • @muscises1858
      @muscises1858  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, Blastem is a (very-accurate) Genesis emulator. There's also nukeyt's emulator for the Genesis, github.com/nukeykt/Nuked-MD, but it requires a more processing power to even work.

      Currently, I don't have any plans to upload my stuff to Spotify(mainly out of principle) but I'll definitely compile my recent works on my BandCamp sometime during the summer this year. Thanks for the compliment as well! 😄

    is this emulation or physical chipz?

    • @muscises1858
      @muscises1858  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So, this is emulated through Blastem which is the most accurate Sega Genesis emulator. However, this can be played through the physical chips 100%.
      I have some hardware recorded on me, if you're interested.

    • @muscises1858
      @muscises1858  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The neat part is depending on which parts are playing, the registers will reflect it accordingly. A good example is seeing when I switch from full FM to FM + PCM.
