Steve Jobs really knew how to present a product. Taking the Macbook Air out of an envelope, iPod nano out of his watch pocket, passing a laptop through a hula hoop to show that it's wireless, etc... I remembered thinking Apple was so revolutionary, it was literally bringing sci-fi into reality. I miss him.
Back in those days, every time Apple had a keynote, I was totally glued. Steve Jobs was so good at selling their products, I just wanted to own all of them. They've gotten a little too slick and shiny nowadays. Steve had a way of speaking to the audience like he was showing off a new toy.
Totally agree. The keynotes are way too sanitized now. The Jobs keynotes were, like you said, a geek showing off this cool new thing to the type of geek who is nerdy enough to actually tune in to a presentation about it. I think another part of it was that the Jobs era happened at a time when computing was progressing by absolute leaps and bounds, so there was an energy to it that just isn't the same anymore. In the late 90s we all basically had big clunky desktops (either Mac or PC) that couldn't do a whole lot and a very new internet that had a lot of potential but hadn't been around long enough yet. Just ten years later we got usable laptops that didn't weigh a ton, really fast desktop chips, graphics processors, amazing portable devices (ipods, iphones, etc.) and the internet was really hitting its stride. Nowadays everyone has a supercomputer in their pocket, and their expectations are commensurate with that, but back then I think we were all just amazed at what was becoming possible.
Steve Jobs' charisma played indeed a huge role. This was also a time when new revolutionary products were being introduced. The release of Apple Silicon Macs is the only new exciting thing at Apple I've seen in years.
It was a different time for sure. But sometimes I wonder if they have changed or if i I’m just getting old. The sad reality is that nothing will ever be as good as it was.
Let it sit on the standard adapter for a couple hours. The battery MIGHT reform itself. Second option is to use the macbbook for a couple hours. Put the ipod on top of something cold (maybe from the freezer) for a couple hours. Put it in a safe area in case of fire. Last option is a new battery.
The SACD 5.1ch version of Pink Floyd’s Time is 1/2gb alone, I could put that song on the original nano twice (it wouldn’t play though because it’s a wav, and even then it’s so high bitrate that even my iPhone 6s struggled with it)
Just watched this, ran to the next room, opened my "old stuff that I don't use anymore but I might use again one day... maybe" drawer, toke my nano out, plugged it to the computer, installed itunes, waited on it to update stuff and things, and it still works, after all these years. I love this little bugger!
tell me, does it have a black spot in the middle of the screen, because if it does that means the battery has expanded and i wouldn't plug it into a charger for risk of fire.
I saw an old guy at the Y with a large handheld cassette tape player walking the track, while I stream music from space with my watch and beam it into my head with Bluetooth.
Man after more than a decade, seeing you come back after you left and with better content and production than ever before, I still love watching your channel. Thanks for staying snazzy.
Plugging it into the old 5W wall brick was some old head shit and I 100% support it I've been loving these retro reviews, keep it up! Incredibly hacky, not-at-all recommended fix for the USB power issue: splice the cable Feed it steady 5V1A from the wall brick but leave the data lines in tact and plug that other, more different USB directly into the computer
Had one of these, absolutely loved it - was passed onto my sister and got used for years. This really was an incredible product and my teenage years wouldn't have been the same without it.
As an owner of the iPod mini at that time I was absolutely green with envy when everyone else was getting the nano while I was stuck with a mini. I loved it nonetheless until its last day after a good two years plus of use. The nano was just so cool with its insanely small design for what was then a pretty decent capacity.
I had this in late 2005, it was a crazy upgrade from the iPod mini when it was announced. So cool and unexpected especially as iPod mini was a big seller at the time.
12:10 Oh man, this takes me back… It’s January 2007, and I had just turned 13. I took my birthday money and was so excited to buy an iPod (Nano, 2nd gen). One small problem… Only dial-up internet was available where we lived, and Apple had stopped including an iTunes CD with the second gen. I wired my laptop into the phone jack late that night and initiated the iTunes download. ALL NIGHT. That is how long it took to download. ALL. NIGHT. Real time, it was probably 5-7 hours for what was a 45 MB file, if I remember correctly. Fortunately the connection didn’t time out, but you talk about serious anxiety waiting for iTunes to finish downloading just so I could sync like three CD’s worth of music. My goodness…
ah the nostalgia, it was my first ever Apple product as well, I loved this thing and took it everywhere, but mostly in my pocket together with a key and dust, hence why it looked very scratched up in the end, it still worked tho. BUT many years after they came out with the Video-Nano I got an email from apple for a replacement program stating that the batteries in these old Nanos are known to explode and cause severe damage. So I send them the old scratched one (I wasnt using anyways since they just had the iPhone 3G rolled out) and got a brand new shiny Video-Nano that I then gifted to my mom. thanks for bringing back memories with these videos.
I worked at the Apple store from 2004 - 2013 which is what I would say are the most interesting Apple years. I would have never thought back then that opening a brand new nano would have commanded such attention. I must have opened hundreds of these with all the store openings I did.
I remember back in high school when the iPad Nano first dropped and SO many kids got them as gifts for birthdays/Christmas. When my friend showed his to me, I recall being completely blown away by the technology. I was totally captivated by it's small size, that it had a color screen, and that it could hold so much music. It was the music player of music players, and anyone who was anyone had one.
I got Creative MuVo 1GB in 2005 - comparable small, cheaper, removable classic AAA battery, classic USB, works like flash drive, no stupid itunes and it still works today !
I have one, it was recently passed to by my aunt, after my uncle passed of cancer in 2009. It still has all his music on it, I will not be deleting his music or adding any of my own. Just happy to have it an remember him by.
Ahhhh the memories. I loved my first gen nano, black one just like the one you have here. Although, in 2011 there was recall on nanos that were produced between 2005 and 2006 and mine fell into that list. I found out about the recall somewhere around 2015 and they still replaced it with a 6th gen nano. I definitely miss the 1st gen though. Thanks for the memories.
The video iPod was the game changer. Before that I wasn't interested in iPods etc, but then that device came out and it was a game changer. It worked as a video/music player, and also as an external drive with my iBook. Both my iBook and iPod had a 60gb drive, so that was the perfect setup for college for me. I've still got the iPod and it works fine, solid build! Great videos btw!
It’s pretty unbelievable that the Nano looks so sleek even today. I remember working one of my first jobs when this came out. All the teens wanted one. I still have mine and love it.
This was an enjoyable and fun retro video. Picked-up my first iPod model a used classic 5th generation in 2014, because my new automobile had a special port for iPods. Mine also came with the original box, 30-pin charging cable, set-up guide, and CD-ROM. In addition, I picked-up two Apple iPod charging stands (keep one at home and the other in the office) with their matching white remote controls. Daily, I still use my iPod a home, in the car, and at the office (smile...smile).
Early adopter here...bought the first gen iPod (two, actually) along with an ice iBook G3 and went hat in hand to my friends borrowing CDs to rip....then just loved the opening of the iTunes Store....we take it for granted now but for a music lover and prolific buyer of Vinyl....8-tracks....cassettes and finally CDs (by the hundreds)...iPod, iTunes and the iTunes stores was like a miracle had happened....good times.....
I have an iPod nano fifth generation, and it still works! Mine was it 8 GB model. I love it! It was back in 2009 when I got it! My first ever Apple product I’ve ever owned in my life.
Honestly I feel like I was lucky to grow up with iPods before smartphones and even the iPod touch took over its place. I had the fat nano because I was a bit too young for the model in this video, and my parents had the standard iPods, what most consider the classic iPods. One of my personal favorite devices growing up and introduced me to Audiobooks.
I absolutely loved my nano back in the day. Never left without it. The collector in me felt weird watching you unbox such a relic but I bet it felt amazing to get that puppy open.
A white 4GB one was the first I ever got, prior to that I had a certified nugget and a discman, good times. Long after that nano was irrelevant the battery recall happened and I brought mine in to an authorized store, got an 8GB 6th gen in its place. Sadly, the power button on that stopped working, but the iPod was more of a novelty as I used a smartphone as a media player by then.
The timing on this is crazy! I almost bought the exact same thing (though I was between an iPod Mini and iPod classic!). Must be iPod season coz I was needing some nostalgia!
13:30 i had one of those iPods nano when I was 14 and I never understood what was I supposed to do with that dock. That question has been answered today my friend. Now I can rest in piece 🪦
Had one of these! Was my second iPod after a 3rd gen 20gb.. now that one came with everything! Case, dock, wired remote, cloth.. a whole heap of stuff. It’s why I bought it over the 10gb one. My all time favorite iPod was the 3rd gen nano.. the stubby one that played video. That thing was awesome! Had it full of tv shows and movies.
I got one today and I wanna ask whether it's normal that it's kinda little bulgy at the center (the selection/center button doesn't click as deep as the otherbuttons on the wheel)
iPod nano was my first Apple product i ever had, never even heard about Apple at that point, in my country most kids still used CD players lol so when i would bring iPod nano to school and show to kids it was like magic to them, like something from a different planet lol
Wtf. I'm 17 and as many people from my age group watch this channel as over 65 year olds. I didn't expect that haha. Quinn is my favorite producer on TH-cam 12:23
I had a 4gb version of this and loved it, I then kicked myself for sending it back under the apple battery replacement scheme only to get a 5th gen nano as a replacement. Fast forward about a decade and good old ebay had one going for £6 with a knackered battery. Replaced the battery and enjoyed the device again, yes it lacks the additions that modern smart phones have but that's part of the elegance, its about listening to the music :) great video as always. Cheers
Similar situation here but I had gotten a 2 GB white first gen nano from some e-waste bin. Sent in and got an awful 6th gen that loved to crash and lag and freeze, ans compared to a fifth gen I had at the time, I was awful. Them I found a perfectly fine 4 GB white first gen that even had no engraving and a good battery for $25 and I snapped it up asap. Works amazingly well, but I'm really wishing I had the radio adapter.
My dad bought one of these in 2006, still have the box with everything in it, the iTunes disk and the sleeve are still unused, and the iPod itself still works and still has pretty decent battery life
If the battery is 100% flat, then use some sort of 30 pin to FireWire adapter to kickstart the battery. Like the PocketDock with a FireWire cable (either 400 to 800 or 400 to 400) or a regular 30 pin to FireWire cable connected to an older Mac, a FireWire to outlet adapter, or a modern Mac with a series of adapters. And a heads up: first gen nanos don't get the black spot at all. The battery placement is further down and replacing said battery is way easier thanks to it having a design more like the fifth gen Classic.
My first iPod was the first Gen White 4GB Nano. I loved the thing and kept it in that grey sleeve to keep it scratch free, eventually Apple recalled all first gen Nanos and gave free upgrades to the ipod nano with the touch screen and I traded mine in.
Unboxing my nano in the backseat of the car on the way home from the apple store is one of my few core memories. I unfortunently only had the songs that my dad had on CDs, so I used it mostly to play the "Brick" game for hours. Such an inflential device
Watching this gave me so much nostalgia. My first apple product was a gen 2 nano and I loved that thing so much. The iPod nano is the reason I’m a iOS dev today. Loved the video and trip down memory lane.
15:13 the battery is not under the display, the display takes up almost all the room in the device, the battery is off to the bottom left under the clickwheel when facing forward, so an expanding battery would probably just make the clickwheel stiff
I remember getting the iPod nano as my first ever iPod and boy do I have some fond memories with it. I still have it though it ended up getting tossed in a storage bin an absolutely wrecked. I do plan on refurbishing it with all new parts top to bottom back to front
I remember getting my first iPod, it was a green mini and I was in 8th grade. Was so stoked, one of the first songs I remember buying was that lime in the coconut song. Good times man
19:10 replace the battery or get a boombox with the old iPod-dock that powers it and allows you to transfer data via it's own cable (usually USB B aka "printer USB")
Love the video! Awesome research and presentation. Quality video as always!! “…that other button doesn’t work” 😂 Appreciate the script writing on your videos!
I had this too, but in the first decade of the 2000s there was a recall from Apple, and they gave me one of those square ones in exchange for mine. I had the white version.
I have the exact same nano, it got trashed alongside my moto razer when I fell drunk into a river. I still have it in its box somewhere 😅 I lived this little guy, it was way cooler than the next one
Thanks for opening that fossil up for us. It must have been worth a lot in it's original packaging, and it was really cool to see. I really do hope you get it working soon, and I hope you make a video of that.
For me, I also have the iPod classic that was released around 2005. It is chunky but works smoothly and still no scratches or dents. Then the iPod nano with a camera that I also have doesn't hold any battery charge anymore so it was placed only on the dock to make it still useful. Great video and research btw. Wish Apple will still release iPods with click wheels.
I still have my iPod 3rd gen fat Nano, I got it one Christmas, it was all I asked for and wanted it for ages, to use in my car with my fancy stereo, and it still works today flawlessly although I don’t use it, had many an iPhone since then for music duties.
Because of this video, I just plugged my 2nd Gen iPod nano (8GB) into my laptop. Everything works and the list of songs are still there. Funnily, the last time the songs were played was 9/17/2012. LOL I recently refreshed all my old iPhones -- 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 6, and 6S. I traded my other ones in towards the new 14" MBP.
Bought one when I was in high school. 2005 with my first pay check from my first high school job. My first iPod, 2G Black for $266.43 CAD. Went in for a iPod shuffle or mini not realizing the nano had come out. Was so impressed how tiny it was at the time lol. It was part of a recall a few years later and got it replace through Apples replacement program with a 6th Gen
I am not referring specifically to this video but I have been liking very much where u've been taking your channel for the last 2 years(narratively, script-wise, etc) congrats on the mil
:53 I (shouldn't admit that I) still have the PowerTower Pro 225 that was part of my first Protools rig. As of a few years it would still boot, into OS8.6.
I was more of an original iPod user, which later turned into the Classic, I loved having my entire music library in my pocket. My first iPod was the 3rd gen, I remember back then I was still on Windows and there wasn't iTunes for Windows at the time. It eventually took me down the path of getting a MacBook in 2006 and then the original iPhone in 2007. It is safe to say that the iPod did its job of hooking me into the Apple ecosystem way back in the early 2000s. Just from a business standpoint, it is absolutely incredible how Steve Jobs turned around Apple from a company about to go under in 1997 to the most valuable company in the world in 2010, with hit after hit. The iMac, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad.
I never owned an iPod as a kid but I did see the iPod classic and the touch next to each other at Radio Shack. I understood why kids wanted the touch with the app store and whatnot but I saw the 160gb storage and wanted it. I did not have a lot of music but seeing that device made me want to get more music.
I just got a new phone after being with a 2gb of ram 16gb of ROM smartphone with a 720 screen and watching a video of yours on a proper screen with a big size... Wow it's mesmerizing, you're a whole beast Quinn
Still have one in the basement... in a miscellaneous wires/tech box. 1gb version in black. Still works too. Bought it brand new back in high school at the local walmart.

Still rocking my iPod Classic 5th gen. Love it. Zero distractions while listening to music.
iPod nano was my first Apple product i ever had, never even heard about Apple at that point, in my country most kids still used CD players lol so when i would bring iPod nano to school and show to kids it was like magic to them, like something from a different planet lol
Im watching this back to back with the DankPods video of the same subject, and is so much fun the difference in style!
Ah, mid-2000's Apple, those were the days. So much nostalgia watching this. The 1 GB iPod Nano--in white--was my first iPod (I was 19 at the time).
I loved my iPod Nano. I remember riding the bus to elementary school as a kid listening to music. Brings me back lol
My dad bought one of these in 2006, still have the box with everything in it, the iTunes disk and the sleeve are still unused, and the iPod itself still works and still has pretty decent battery life
Get to it and replace the battery before it gets to expand and push the display out
If the battery is 100% flat, then use some sort of 30 pin to FireWire adapter to kickstart the battery.
The battery placement is further down and replacing said battery is way easier thanks to it having a design more like the fifth gen Classic.
i got one of these at launch and absolutely loved it! Couldn't believe how small and light it was.
The unboxing starts at 10:20.
15:13
the battery is not under the display, the display takes up almost all the room in the device, the battery is off to the bottom left under the clickwheel when facing forward, so an expanding battery would probably just make the clickwheel stiff
These retro reviews are definitely my favorite. Great video!!
Good times man
I still miss my ipod. It was amazing when they came out. Had a couple of the larger Classics.
Really love these vintage unboxing videos dude, keep 'em coming! Awesome!
19:10 replace the battery or get a boombox with the old iPod-dock that powers it and allows you to transfer data via it's own cable (usually USB B aka "printer USB")
Love the video! Awesome research and presentation. Quality video as always!!
“…that other button doesn’t work” 😂
Appreciate the script writing on your videos!
My first iPod was a used white 1st gen Nano. Still by far the best Apple product I ever owned.
Please continue this video format! Absolutely loving it!
I had this too, but in the first decade of the 2000s there was a recall from Apple, and they gave me one of those square ones in exchange for mine. I had the white version.
I also had an iPod that was up-exchanged when they didn't have any service inventory. Apple support was amazing back then.
I have the exact same nano, it got trashed alongside my moto razer when I fell drunk into a river. I still have it in its box somewhere 😅
I lived this little guy, it was way cooler than the next one
This was my first ipod back in the day, still remember how much I loved it
Same here 1st gen nano was my first apple product.
Mine too!!! Brings back so many fond memories.
Thanks for opening that fossil up for us. It must have been worth a lot in it's original packaging, and it was really cool to see. I really do hope you get it working soon, and I hope you make a video of that.
And here we are, 16 years later, and iTunes still looks like its from 2005.
For me, I also have the iPod classic that was released around 2005. It is chunky but works smoothly and still no scratches or dents. Then the iPod nano with a camera that I also have doesn't hold any battery charge anymore so it was placed only on the dock to make it still useful. Great video and research btw. Wish Apple will still release iPods with click wheels.
watching this video about ipods took me back to 2002-2004 times... times when life was easy
Love seeing that graph showing vinyl and possibly CD coming back with vegence
I still have my iPod 3rd gen fat Nano, I got it one Christmas, it was all I asked for and wanted it for ages, to use in my car with my fancy stereo, and it still works today flawlessly although I don’t use it, had many an iPhone since then for music duties.
Great video! Very nostalgic! And shoutout @dankpods! Glad you mentioned him he’s amazing!
Shout out to the BeOS screenshot 3:32! I feel like I was one of the few diehard users of that operating system back in the late 90s/early 2000s!
Never stop doing these videos! they are very entertaining in the time of the Tech Draught!
Because of this video, I just plugged my 2nd Gen iPod nano (8GB) into my laptop. Everything works and the list of songs are still there. Funnily, the last time the songs were played was 9/17/2012. LOL
I recently refreshed all my old iPhones -- 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 6, and 6S. I traded my other ones in towards the new 14" MBP.
9:15 didn't expect Quinn to be playing Roblox on the modbook lmao
Brings back many memories. I remember my friend in HS letting me borrow his iPod Video. That thing was so cool
It just hit me that the famous “that other button seems to work as well” is no more. It was all foreshadowing.
Lol the “that’s what she said” around 19:44
YES! Snazzy knows my new favorite channel! Dank pods best channel 2021!
Every Apple channel has their “retro Apple history” phase
I can’t wait for the next video in the series where Quinn buys old broken apple products!
"If you don't like that other button doesn't work." I'm dead lol!
This was my first iPod, too. I’m totally geeking out with you. Found myself saying “YEAH!” when the iPod turned on with the old charged! YEAH! 🤓
I am not referring specifically to this video but I have been liking very much where u've been taking your channel for the last 2 years(narratively, script-wise, etc) congrats on the mil
Every time someone references DankPods it makes me smile
:53 I (shouldn't admit that I) still have the PowerTower Pro 225 that was part of my first Protools rig. As of a few years it would still boot, into OS8.6.
Hahahaha that's awesome.
This brings back. This was my first apple product too. What a enjoyable video. I geeked out so much watching this. So much nostalgia.
I remember getting one of these for Christmas from Mom and Dad with a personalized engraved message on the back panel.
Wow. I love your style. These are so much fun to watch. It is also great to hear you on Flashback.
Still have one in the basement... in a miscellaneous wires/tech box. 1gb version in black. Still works too. Bought it brand new back in high school at the local walmart.
I think this, the original iPod nano, was one of the best looking and feeling pieces of tech ever.
