    You can teach your students word math problems using the Appalachian Trail. For instance, if dehydrated food for a day is 20oz, how many pounds of food will it take for 6 day section hike until next resupply.

    Good Luck...because of covid concerns I skipped the AT in 21 and stuck to the Florida Trail. Whole thing is more mental than physical. You're in charge of your pace; so enjoy when you want, blast through when you want, and rest when you need to...it's fun.

    Good luck with your thru hike. I am a teacher as well and also requested a leave from April until the end of the school year. I was told that I could take the full year unpaid which for me wasn’t financially possible. I retire in 5 years and will have to wait until then. That’s great that your administration was so supportive. Best of luck!

    I applaud your decision to take a leave and complete this journey. My wife has taught elementary for 30 years. It’s always a struggle to get her to take time off outside of official holidays and summer. The job or a job will always be there when you return. I heard you say you'll hike the AT from north to south(SoBo). Somebody once said, "Once you get through New Hampshire, the hiking is over - the rest is just mileage." Good time in your life to do this - do it while you can. I dreamed of a thru-hike for decades and never did it. Now, I'm too old for the efforts it takes.

    I’m a retired teacher, an AVID hiker, and I live on the west coast. As much as I love to hike, I’ve never done a through-hike. (My longest backpacking trips were about 60 miles in five or six days.) I am 73 now, with some health challenges, so it’s likely I never will. I taught for 33 years, then subbed in my district for eight years. Teaching is hard work, and it can be emotional draining. You’re smart to take a break. I’m thankful your school district has been so supportive. I am subscribing, and wishing you the very best!

    Good luck on your thru hike. You're right about timing - you should do it now before you have family and kids. I've been section hiking the AT because there's no way I can take 4 to 5 months off work. I've hiked much of the southern section. If you have any questions or need any advice let me know. Experience is golden on the AT, and I've learned much on what to do vs what not to do on all my section hikes.

    You're making your hike into what I like to call "a sanity pause". Ramdino in his vlog yesterday, discussed the danger of SOBO from Mt K.
    One thing that you have to beware of is the ticks. There are now 9 diseases carried by ticks east of the Mississippi. Please be very careful. My wife died from one of those diseases. Each year more hikers get tick sick. The worst ticks are so small that you can't usually see them. The best protection seems to be treating all gear and outer clothing with Permethrin. It lasts about a month but you have to be careful when applying it. In liquid form, it can be absorbed through the skin. Ticks are ever present because of mice in the shelters. Try waterproof socks because much of the AT turns into streams when it rains. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

    • @annebarch7751
      @annebarch7751 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One of my worst fears. Starting April 1st and I will be very mindful of ticks

    • @richardross7219
      @richardross7219 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@annebarch7751 A couple of years ago, a Kiwi wore tights for her entire thru hike for protection. Don't be afraid just be aware and treat with a repellent daily or Permethrin every few weeks. I was tick sick 8 times before I started using Permethrin 5 years ago. I now spray my yard with Cutter each spring and my clothes with Permethrin each month. I haven't been tick sick since. I just sprayed my jeans last Monday. The worst ticks are so small that they are very hard to see. Rubbing with a wet wipe may work better then just looking. I take a hot soapy shower each evening to wash off any ticks. Good Luck, Rick

    I stumbled on your channel through the whims of TH-cam. I have a lot of respect for teachers, particularly in these challenging times. I think it great your district worked with you to make this happen in such a positive way. I wanted to wish you well in your AT journey. I’ll be following along. I am a retiree, a long time hiker who completed my own AT hike last September. I am always happy to give advice but only if you want it. Having said that though I will say there’s an understandable tendency to show the good things in vlogs but I’ve always enjoyed AT vlogs the most that are honest and show the ups and downs of a long journey like the AT. There’s a life lesson in there. I live in Massachusetts so when you get up this way feel free to reach out. Shawn. “DoubleVision”.

    I’m probably dating myself but I did it 30 years ago, and it was fun and painful at the same time.😂
    My suggestion is be prepared and always be aware of your surroundings. You will run into some nice people, and some sketchy people. Carry personal protection!
    Stay on the trail, there’s a lot of paths that can get you hurt. I’d also recommend getting an ACR personal locator or a Bivy Stick which will allow two way satellite communications. And check in with loved ones twice a day. Let them know in the morning that you are starting out, and in the evening were you are, give them the exact GPS Location.
    Best of luck, when you get to NH I’ll buy you a coffee.👍

    DO NOT hike the Appalachian trail by yourself , if you do take a locator beacon and a satellite phone and don’t forget your gun!!
    PLEASE BE SAFE, THE MISSING 411 SERIES HAS GOT ME TELLING EVERYONE TO BE SAFE AND TAKE THOSE ITEMS WITH YOU, for some reason I can’t stop thinking about you!!
    I keep praying for you. Take care of yourself.
    God bless you and your family.🙏

      @@AudreyGibson573 you know a 380 caliber gun is very small and packs a big punch, it would fit perfectly on your waist....
      I'm from Colorado and we're always hiking but we take lots of precautions!
      One day my wife and I want to hike the Appalachian trail as well, have fun on your trip.
      God bless
      By the way

      @S. M. If this is a public school, it is inappropriate. Private school: I don’t give a crap. But this in not a Christian nation.
