I too got off the trail this year, but much earlier than you did. The shuttle driver/hostel owner who took me to a hotel gave me some good advice (I'm certain he's had this conversation before!). Basically, he said that you don't have to be a thru-hiker to be an AT hiker. Whether you day hike, section hike, LASH, or whatever, you are still - and will always be - an AT hiker. What you accomplished is fantastic, and it's an accomplishment you should always be proud of!!

Unfortunately, too often we assign our value as a person to our accomplishments and our productivity. We seek bigger and bigger things to FEEL "worthy of love". The reality is, none of it matters. I've seen it for 20+ years as an endurance athlete and coach. The true problem isn't mental, it's emotional, and there's a differed. One of these days I'll get to posting videos on all of this. Until then, all I can say is, we each matter, are worthy of love, and connection is proven to be the key to happiness.

@@ElPiedro80, for sure. The body has a limits but there is so much more that can be done to take care of it than what most people (and doctors) realize. And one question I often ponder is "why do so many people push their body to the extreme?"
This is a little off topic now, perhaps. I just want to be clear that I 110% support @Laura's decision.

Being a fellow AT thru hiker, I can fully relate to all of your physical and mental challenges. Hiking the AT is hard, no matter your physical shape and conditioning. Take time to reflect on and reevaluate your preparedness.
Physical therapy helped me tremendously with foot and ankle issues, as well as changing shoe brands.
As hard as it is to hike alone, it's better to hike miles each day that work for your body, than to push more miles sooner in order to stay together with a group, and have your body in pain from over use. This is definitely a difficult choice to make, but as you establish your own mileage range, you will still be around other hikers, and eventually be able to hike longer days with higher milage once your body adjusts to the trail.
Eventually, you'll get your trail legs, and the pain will disipate. For some hikers, it takes two weeks. Other hikers can take two months or longer. Listen to your body, and hike the mileage that works best for you. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and there will be plenty of time to make friends along the way.
I believe that if you take time to reflect, recover your confidence, and regroup, that you will learn from this experience, and will have a much greater chance to succeed on your next attempt. There is no failure in trying, the only failure is when you stop trying.
Best of luck to you. Also, check out Trail Days in Damascus on May 19-22. Not only is it a really great experience, but you can learn a lot from successful past thru hikers. --Ozoner

The day you started the trail, you were successful. You did fantastic. I'm out on the trail right now and I've watched a lot of people go home. Some went home because they completed their goals. Some went home because the pain either mental or physical was that severe. Most people will never understand what you've gone through. I can empathize with that pain. Good luck in your future, I have no doubt you will be extremely successful in life.

The trail is always there. Section hike, long section hike, day hike and many other choices are still available for you. As a thru hiker, I can say I respect anybody that’s on the trail no matter how they do it. Even just doing some of the highlights and skip other sections. You’ve got a long life ahead of you. It’s your journey, don’t struggle with it.

It's too bad that you didn 't get in with a different group that had the same plan of action that you had, but...that's all history now..the most important thing you can do immediately is to get to good podiatrist and have your feet checked out. I too have foot issues and knee issues and unless you have experienced the pain that goes with it you might not be able to understand..but I do. I have to say that you are one of the funnest vloggers that I have followed in several years. Thank you for all of these fun videos..I thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them! PT helped me a lot. I am sure you learned from this experience and grow as person. Please be kind and gentle to yourself. I am sure putting everything on TH-cam puts a lot of stress on yourself. I’m not sure where I heard/read this statement but I think it provides an important perspective, that is “comparison is the thief of joy”. While most of us find it difficult to not compare ourselves and our accomplishments (or perceived lack there of) to others I think that is an important goal. Good luck and remember you gave yourself a chance by taking the first step.

You were not ready. To be an AT Through hiker is not something you just decide to do. it is a goal that you have to really want to achieve and have to work to attain. Start slowly and build your body and mind, once that is achieved then you can attempt to try again. Those that have ascended Mount Katahdin are a very small and elite group.

The incessant pain you had would make anyone doubtful and whittle away mental strength quickly. You failed nothing. You have every reason to feel good about yourself! You have accomplished more than almost everyone you know. You have persevered incredible adversity and triumphed over it. This is from a section hiker who has ended hikes sooner than planned more often than not and is now only 116.5 miles from completion. Those "failures" will cumulate in success. I'm sure that you will recuperate and rekindle the desire to get back on trail. When you do, hike your own hike and celebrate your accomplishments.

Second, Anyone that comments on here about you quitting is small minded and self centered or might have had money involved in you completing it. So do NOT worry about those "people". I'm very glad for one that you have the tenacity to get on here to let everyone know what happened and what your plans are. It takes alot of guts to do that. It also IS a great video for those that are coming behind you to make them understand what it takes! What someone goes through is an individual feeling. but it does take alot of effort to get on here like this. most hikers would just drop off the Vlog and not explain or something like that. So from me and Buttons Congrats again and you hike your own hike the way you want to do it! Don't ever let someone tell you different. P&B..... P.S. You would have met lots of new people that way. You were hiking your group's hike not yours. Also I've heard the PCT trail isn't as rough, I live in the Appalachian mountains, these are very rough and hard trails! Be proud of what you did, and the things you plan to do. All those marathons sound awesome to me. Don't stop on here, you're good to watch. I'm hoping you've been to a doctor regarding your knees, ankles and especially your feet. The mistake people make is going to the AT with the intention of completing it.
The intention should be to go to the AT to see how far they can get and if they manage to be the small percentage that do complete, great. Completing is very unlikely. It doesn't come down to just your ability, but chance, circumstance and you can't foresee the possible physical/health problems that can arise.
Do go with the intention of trying your best, but shit happens. Don't expect it to be a success on the first try. Or it to even actually be a thing you want to do once you get a taste for it.
So if you don't, well, no big deal.

Laura, you should not look at your hike as a failed attempt of a Thru hike, but you should take pride that you successfully completed a LASH! Congratulations! You not only did it under harsh weather conditions, but you did it while constantly maintaining a vlog. That’s nothing to sell yourself short on. Now, if you choose, you can pick back up on trail and continue on as a Section Hiker, picking better weather conditions and better enjoy the trail. It’s all about perspective … I just finished section hiking the Smokys last week and on the first night on trail, I was asleep in my hammock and was woken up at 5:30am by a 70mph thunderstorm that ripped my rain fly stakes out of the ground. For 15 to 20 minutes I was hanging on for dear life, wondering about surviving. But I did, and chalked it up as an experience. I know how you felt about your feet … mine swelled up so bad during the Massachusetts section that I had to get off trail. I saw a pediatrist when I got home and got fixed up with custom inserts. If you don’t get back on trail in the future, I get it, but there’s no expiration date on section hiking the whole thing … and you’re on a great head start. Good luck on whatever you decide, and again Congratulations on what you’ve so far accomplished! Sugar Bear

That's a really difficult situation to try to "hike your hike" while also being tied to a group. It's hard. Regarding ankle/foot pain, both hiking and running, might be worth getting some analysis and checking whether you have well-matched footwear to your bio-dynamics.

So back in 2022 I attempt my first thru hike on the AT. I felt that I could do it. Well that was a big nope. I took an ankle injury while I was in Georgia. Took 3 zeros icing my foot at the Hiawassee budget Inn. On day four I felt great day five I left for the trail and got about two days outside off Franklin NC. When I could not walk any more without severe pain. So back to Hiawassee and call the wife to pick me up. Yup that sucked. It took 90 days of physical therapy to fix what I hurt. But , I am going out on the AT in March of 2024. Look you did the right thing and I hope you try it again. Do not concern yourself about what other people may think about you taking an extended break from the AT.Rest up and at another date and time do it. Life short have fun and everyday is a good day.

@@lauraevelynashley yes saving money is one of the reasons it’s taken me two years to go back. One bit of advice ,well maybe. One. You hike you. Meaning hike your speed ,your pace. Also in the begin do only 5-8 mile days , take three weeks in Georgia. It will be alright. Don’t get caught up in the race. I know I did and by the time I hit Woody’s gap I all most quit. Also I had the wrong foot ware for me. So my feet were killing me. So I went back to Dahlonega. Where I took two zeros. Bought new foot ware rewrote my plane, which was “there is no plan”. Remember it’s a hike not a race, that and every day is a good day.

Regarding pain during an activity, a good rule is to stop the activity if the pain does not subside or gets worse - or to REASONABLY continue the activity if the pain improves with the activity. It looks like you may have been well overdue for at least a significant break just to address the pain and potential injury.
I hope that you can find your way back out - and it looks like you would be better off tagging along more or less on your own, or until you find others who hike to your style. Nothing to be worried about as everyone should get to hike their own hike.
Good luck in planning your BRIGHT future.

People of all ages do the hike, you can take is as slow as you want. Marathons get harder as you get older and your injuries could impede, so do those!!! Then worry about the hike. I know lots of hikers and lots of runners, they all say get your marathons done if that's where your heart is. Go to Atlanta and do the Peachtree Road Race, every 4th of July. A lot of my family runs that. I live in the Ap mountains, these are hard and mean mountains. Anyway, your face really lit up when you talked about the marathons. Do those!!!😊

  • @RC-qf3mp
    @RC-qf3mp ปีที่แล้ว +2

Not failing, just another learning experience. Some things to consider for next time:
    1) HYOH, at your own pace, nobody else’s. People come and go. New people come along. Embrace being alone. If you absolutely must keep up with other people, then you are subordinating your health to somebody else’s pace. Part of the mental growth of hiking is being on your own.
    2) cut pack weight. And that includes extra video equipment.
    3) consider strengthening foot health by walking barefoot on soft natural ground, paying attention to walking form. Start slow. 5 min a day. It should be soothing and massaging not painful. Gradually increase time walking barefoot. If problems persist, see podiatrist and physical therapist. Explore minimalist shoes to train in… to develop foot health.
    4) if foot health improves, add a backpack while still wearing minimalist shoes. Low weight. Short distances on natural surfaces. If that goes well, increase weight and increase time.
I strongly advice against running if you have the pains you do. You are likely just repeating a motion that is aggravating your stress injuries. Walk before you run. Walk before you hike.
    Good luck.

Hi Laura, thanks for this video. I was so sad for you that you hiked for 35 days in sh!t weather and then quit as soon as the weather started to get good. On your last day on trail you were clearly struggling mentally because you were hiking alone, and you didn't get back on trail after that so it looks like you did quit on a bad day. It seemed that your brother and sister in law influenced your decision to quit and I wondered whether if you had gone to Happy Gnomads and taken three zeros there, that you might have made a different decision. But I had no idea how much physical and mental pain you were in. When you showed the clips of you crying I just thought that was part of life on the trail and you were "embracing the suck". I hope you are feeling physically and mentally better after a few more days at home, and that your feet recover. Are you able to see a doctor or physiotherapist who can advise on how you could do things differently next time? Were you in the wrong shoes or did you just push yourself too much in the early days? Maybe you could do a video on that when you get the answers "How to NOT torture your feet while hiking the AT" :)
Please ignore the haters - how many of them have completed a thru-hike? Failure is part of success! You hiked the AT for 35 days and got a lot further than most people do! You have learned so much and this will help you in the future both in hiking and in other stuff. I hope you will be able to get back to the AT when you are physically and mentally up to it, and section hike some of the nice parts when the weather is good!!! Good luck with the job you applied for, I really hope you get it and that you get to travel to some exciting places! :)

There are 28 bones in the foot and walking distance, carrying weight, causes the bones in your feet to spread out and flatten which makes your feet larger. That adaptation is painful for some. My shoe size grew from 9.5 D to 12 Wide. This is normal and you will adapt. Ice packs numb pain and speed recovery. Women Vloggers don't talk about their LARGE (Humongous) flat feet. Back when cops walked the beat, they were called "Flatfoots". Seriously, this is normal adaptation.

You seem to have conflicting goals related to hiking. You want to meet & hike with others but seem to have a different hike pace than those you want to hike with. I would think you should attempt to get into hiking shape as a lifestyle rather than just act on the idea of this is what I want to do now with little physical preparedness. Also as I'm viewing your videos on hiking the GA portion earlier, you seemed very apprehensive/ill-at-ease about your surroundings along the trail. The only way you will get over that & gain confidence is to do the hikes. And for companionship, reach-out to the hiking community, say the GA AT Club, and find a small group that seems to hike at your pace (& be honest about your comfortable pace), learn from them & their years of hiking experience. From this you will gain confidence & become more at ease with being in the wild outdoors & being prepared & able to handle the challenges. Good luck, but remember there is paralysis in too much analysis. Get prepared & just do it!

Laura, good luck with the job prospect.
Being a runner and a triathlete, I would recommend that you try to do your run training on soft, grassy surfaces (city parks, etc.). That will be much better for your ankles, knees and hips. Also, you could mix up your training with some biking. I would suggest you use clipless pedals so that you utilize all the muscles in your legs and not just some of the muscles which would happen if you are just pressing down on the pedals ("pedal in circles" don't just alternate pushing down on the pedals).
No worries about the trail. You're young. It will be there when you're ready.
You've learned a lot from this experience. Don't beat yourself up.
