There are 8 exercises that give you the biggest bang for your buck when using dumbbells only... And in today's new video I'll share each exercise along with the best form so you get maximum results from each movement... Check it out!
Hi Gary, I'm 56 years old man and been workig out for a while. I been following your workouts for a couple of years now and see big improvements. Less injuries and bigger results thank you brother, you are a blessing. Sincerely Bill Gerdvil
Really love the fact that your targeting older cats and utilizing what I've experienced to be the most effective equipment , dumbbells. I would like to see what your recommendations on proper older men pre-workout shoulder warm up. Thank you for the most informative videos.
For Gary: I like your presentations targeted to older men, especially those using dumbbells. I have a suggestion, which could be a benefit for your organization and particularly for your viewers. I don't see any sites that produce exercise instructions that you can PRINT at home. After a dozen or so assorted exercises, you can easily miss an exercise or an important point in the proper execution. You see some brief sketches on gym equipment, for example, but there's usually more to it than that (weight recommendation, body positions, stance, front and side views of posture, # of reps, and so forth). I'd like to be able to print your specific instructions for every exercise so I don't miss any. The drawings wouldn't cost that much, but an exercise chart is worth a thousand words.
You and Mark have the best channel for older guys like me on TH-cam. What I really appreciate is how you hone in on what is important and then spend time demonstrating exactly how to achieve the exercises for best results. Thank you both!
Hello Gary, I’m 53 years old I been watching your videos for about a month now and I really like the dumbbells, light workout. I’ve had surgery on both of my rotator cuffs and about 2 years ago I had cervical fusion C4 to C7. I also tore my ACL on right knee. I been doing some of the exercises you been showing and they are helping… thanks for taking the time for us older guys.
Gary thnx a lot. 62 here. Strengthing the lower back is what i need to do. I still climb ladders but over the years I just kinda like let the lower back "go". I just watched you video, and even tried the lowe back glute exercise, WOW , i could feel it. It felt great and I'm planning on doing these a lot more thsn just pushing weights with legs, Thanks
Very helpful, thanks. I’m 60. I stopped going to the gym due to COVID and finally gave up on waiting bought some equipment (dumbbells bench, aerobic machine), and am a few weeks in to getting started again. I’d like some coaching on rest and recovery times and how to design a split schedule accordingly. When going to the gym, I did a three-day rotation, fourth day of rest. Day 1: chest and triceps, Day 2: Back and biceps, Day 3: legs and shoulders. I would do some core work each day. Any suggestions to improve that plan? Related to that is number of exercises per muscle group, number of sets of each, and number of reps per set. I typically do a light weight warmup set of 12 reps focusing on form, then heavier for three sets of 8-10, with goal of approaching failure ( it not getting TO failure and risking injury) by last rep of last set. I’d do two exercises per major muscle, such as RDLs and goblet squats for legs, or alternating curls and concentration curls for biceps. Some general guidelines and suggestions about number of sets and reps per set, as well as how often and how to change up the pattern, would be very, very helpful. Thanks again.
I find that my arms get tired first when I do leg exercises like squats. I'm using a 50 lb adjustable dumbbells on both arms. What am I doing wrong and how do I remedy this? Thankful for all your advice.
Its so wonderful that you are helping us older guys. Its a perfect workout. Simple and effective and we don't need all kinds of fancy equipment so can do these even on the road. Thank you Gary..much appreciated!
Hi Garry. I wanted to say thank you for all the material you put out. I've been following your "Best Workout To Build Muscle After 50 (Dumbbell Workout Over 50)" for 2 months now. I'm 51 years old 234 lbs now 221lbs. of course I've been watching my macros and I have to say this is the 1st time I did not hurt so bad I couldn't continue. I doing good progress and I just want to thank you for your focus on us all dudes. Much appreciated.
Gary, thanks for making this video specifically for all us Dinasaur's out here! Turning 70 next month and this gives me direction. Great job, and well done.
Please keep these videos coming in I’m 61 years old now and my legs are very week now / when I was in my prime I used to leg press 600 lbs in my reps with no problem I didn’t think anything about it, then a body builder came over and said €%^# I can’t even do that much in reps , we went to high school together 1979. Now I tried before the gym closed up and my rep included 175 lbs but could have went a little heavier but for safety reasons no need to push , I give up on the gym opening back up there are others but my wood shop in the back yard is doing fine but don’t have much to work with.
Just subscribed..I'm 56 pretty much in shape and fit but i like your style and the way you attack workouts for the older blokes so my dumbbells are about to get a proper tuning..cheers !
That's awesome Martin! TriCon training is a great way to use lighter weights and still build muscle. It creates more time under tension, while protecting your joints as well! Keep up the great work!
I like this as an all around work out. I'm 63 and always looking for new stuff. How much weight would you recommend? 70% of a 1 rep max? And thank you for all you do
Hi there, coach, nice of you to hsve thus in utube videos, can you tell ne more about the breathing techniques n space in these workouts... Next video, please say something about breathing n resting. Thanks
Hey Gary love your videos very inspiring that's said I'm 55 years old and overall good health is it safe for me to do these exercises 5 days a week being I'll only work with 25 lb dumbbells for my upper body and 40 lb for my lower body
Just came across this section of your video this is something I have been missing out of my workouts have tried the reverse lunges with dumbbells it’s just what I needed and at 74+ it is great thankyou .Looking forward to the results .workout at home but i don’t get lazy thanks again
Thanks bro, l've been work out 40 plus years, lm 65 years old,and l love your idea for older man exercise lm totally agree..thanks for your info and demonstration..keep up the good work bro..GB..
I have an issue with my right elbow whenever I do skull crushers or even rope extensions, particularly when I try to increase the weight...any tips on sorting this out, Gary?
All exercises are very excellent and brilliant sir doing the full body workout and keep it up and keep training hard and be strong always sir and stay safe and stay healthy and be positive and happy always sir
I'm 71 and do each of these exercises. Thank you for the excellent instruction. Is it okay that I workout 5 days a week? I alternate upper body one day and lower body the next. I normally do 3 sets X 10 but once a week I do heavier weight and 3 sets X 7.
@@Scott-lg6jo Scott. I'm retired. I'm a morning person (4:30AM) so I exercise early. After a little rest I start my plan of the day. My hobbies are kayaking and fishing, so I workout with that in mind. When you turn a kayak into the wind to cross the lake you can not stop paddling. Anyone can kayak but it takes endurance to paddle non stop for 30 to 60 minutes. Whatever you do for exercise just stay consistent without hurting yourself. Recovery is a lot slower at our age. Good luck.
Thank you for the great video. I’m 65 and have been doing your 8 dumbell exercise routine for about a month now and have enjoyed it a lot. I am impressed by your knowledge especially for us older guys. How many repitions do you recommend for each exercise? Also, how many times a week should it be done. Thank you
Good content. Your ongoing messaging on neutral hand position is really important. As a 65 year old with a few surgeries…. Take the pressure off your joints if you can.
Excellent exercises and presentation. Just added and slightly altered what I just put together for my restart tomorrow after a 2 year idle time. Don't worry, I've been slowly starting with body weight and bands last couple weeks to get ready. Will start light ...Thanks for your video. 69 almost 70.
The BEST apparatus change I have made since I got "older" was going from a full in-home 9 station gym with dumbbells to an off-brand Total Gym (which I bought online used for $60). This is the SAFEST no impact workout giving the most versatile range of movement ever!
I'm 60 and average shape have a physical iob. I've been doing some if your exercises . Love lifting weights .So how often should I workout with weights
Great workout and I'm glad you're including Romanian deadlifts unlike your buddy on the same site who doesn't seem to like them at all because I truly believe they're essential to really hit the lower back and hamstrings more than what any squat or lunge variation does but if people don't really have the balance or ability to do goblet squats if they're older like you said than they're never gonna be able to do reverse lounges or even split squats because their balance won't be there so for older people in particular or anyone but especially older people and older people new to working out I would definitely recommend goblet squats and Romanian deadlifts that comprise of your 2 lower body exercises personally because you don't really need super amazing balance for either one of them exercises at all compared to any form of lunches where your feet aren't planted evenly or firmly but nonetheless great workout and I admire what you guys do because people need help and encouragement regarding exercising for sure!

How many reps and sets are recommended?
Gary, great sequence. Even in 70s, diabetic and partial amputation, I think these are possible. Balance is the issue. Will start slow with lunges.
Thank you for providing excellent advice. I am 70 and find your tips and techniques are very helpful.
Very helpful and informative, thanks man! I'm going to add this group of exercises for certain.
Loved this. I am using it regularly.

That's awesome Martin! TriCon training is a great way to use lighter weights and still build muscle. It creates more time under tension, while protecting your joints as well! Keep up the great work!

I would like to hear LA comment about reps/sets. It is possible to be doing too little or too much.
Hi Gary I am sixty six and enjoying this workout. Thanks for your time
I'd like to see a video on what exercises you do & recommend for your neck! That's something we hardly EVER see on a body building channel, if ever.
Same pair of DB (I mean weight) for all exercises? Could you suggest a weight (resistance) range for men of average build? Thank you.
I'm 71 and do each of these exercises. Thank you for the excellent instruction. Is it okay that I workout 5 days a week? I alternate upper body one day and lower body the next. I normally do 3 sets X 10 but once a week I do heavier weight and 3 sets X 7.
