"The Czech Republic" is still the preferred way to refer to the country over here, and when the common name was changed to "Czechia," there was a lot of resistance against it. Most people still like to refer to it by its official name. And you especially shouldn't call something "strange" because you saw it in an official document somewhere. Nope, Czech Republic is made of three regions: Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. Use Czech republuc (or Czechia if you have), not Bohemia. It is like Great Britain and Northen Ireland. It is made from England, Scottland, Wales and Northen Ireland. So as you cannot use just the name England for whole GB, you cannot use the name Bohemia for whole CR. Historical name of whole area was The Lands of Bohemian Crown. That ment all the land that was ruled by Bohemian king: Kindrom of Bohemia, Margarbism of Moravia and Dutchy of Silesia.

As someone from Czechia I have to partly deny this, yes the younglings use Czechia, including me, however most older people (above 40/50 so a lot of people) quite hate the name and don't even realize that it's official, so you'll hear The Czech Republic or Republic from them far more and they consider it the one correct name. But eventually it will be the case. Kinda like Reichstag and Bundestag.

I used to work with someone from there. She always referred to the country as "Czech" not "Czechia". When I went to Prague in about 1999, "Czech Republic" was the informal name. Calling it Czechia is a relatively recent thing which I still sometimes struggle with.

I think this is an issue with how the country's name is taught in English, because in German and I'm used to say "Tschechien", which is the translation of Czechia. But even Google Translate said "Tschechien" is "Czech Republic" and only showed "Czechia" als an alternative.
I think it's just the word sounds awful. The horrible blend of Slavic Č (Cz/Ч), hard c, silent h and ending it with latin "ia" which is generally not used in English with some exceptions.
That's because Google Translate, like any good translator, is really an interpreter, not a dictionary. "Tschechien" is the common name in German to refer to that country - and which English term fulfills that definition? "Czech Republic".

I say Czechia because it’s easier but it feels like the difference between U.S.A and United States or even America. Since English is used internationally, a newly formed (named) country must fill in the box with the official name of the country and the short name, but the Czechs did not fill in the box with the short name and so only the long name was used. The short name was only added in 2016 and has only started to be used more in the last 3 years or so.

It's not, it's the Czech Republic. That is the official name that most people here use. Czechia is a translation of an archaism and it should remain as such, and many foreigners confuse it with Bohemia which is the central part of the country (the country is split into 3 parts, Bohemia, Silesia, and Moravia). Heck, I confuse the archaism with Bohemia all the time because nobody uses it and it sounds the same (Česko, Čechy).

in Finnish it has usually and plainly been called Tšekki after it separated from its predecessor i.e. Tšekkoslovakia, although people often write it incorrectly as Tsekki, because the letter š is very rare and hard to reproduce on a keyboard. there is no mention of a republic or in Finnish tasavalta, which stands for something along the lines of even/equal power/rule, except in formal usage of course.
Same for Denmark. We call it "Tjekkiet", where "tjek" is the root (a Czech person is called a "tjekke"); "-iet" is a common suffix for countries (like we also call Turkey, "Tyrkiet")

As a Federal Republic of German we actually sometimes use the short form of the formal name (BRD), originally mostly in contrast to the GDR (DDR) which obviously no longer exists, but nowadays it's just another name for the country that you use on a few occasions

As a Czech, I hate calling my country "Czechia". The Czech Republic is generally used more as it does include other regions such as Moravia and Silesia in the "Republic" bit. I don't think any Moravian will ever say "Czechia", lol. "Czech Republic" includes exactly the same amount of Moravia and Silesia as does "Czechia". These regions are not contained or hidden in the word "Republic", as you seem to think. And BTW, the civic initiativ Česko/Czechia, which has been promoting the short name for decades, was founded in Brno, Moravia in 1997. Czechia was not made up by politicians. The name is some 500 years old and was made up by Czech scholars who wanted to have a Czech sounding alternative to Bohemia in Latin. Both Czechia and the Czech Republic were selected as the official names of the country in 1993 by the expert committee. Unfortunately, politicians and bureaucrats ignored this and the short name for decades. People use it because it's much more convenient than the long name. Calling the country "Czech Republic" all the time makes as much sense as calling France "the French Republic" all the time. None and no one does that. It would have been super annoying. You don't like the name simply because you are not used to it. Give it some time and don't tell others not to use it. It's not worth it. After all, we are going to compete as Czechia at the next year's Olympics...

However, I appreciate your corrections and disagreement. Perhaps I sounded like I wanted to force people into using the name "Czech Republic", which would push me on the same side with "Czechia" guys, and that was not my intention. This topic still represents an inner conflict for me.

"The Czech Republic" is still the preferred way to refer to the country over here, and when the common name was changed to "Czechia," there was a lot of resistance against it. Most people still like to refer to it by its official name. And you especially shouldn't call something "strange" because you saw it in an official document somewhere. What's strange is determined by what the people actually use.

As someone from Czechia I have to partly deny this, yes the younglings use Czechia, including me, however most older people (above 40/50 so a lot of people) quite hate the name and don't even realize that it's official, so you'll hear The Czech Republic or Republic from them far more and they consider it the one correct name. When I went to Prague in about 1999, "Czech Republic" was the informal name. Calling it Czechia is a relatively recent thing which I still sometimes struggle with.

The Czechia name has only been official since 2017 and even a lot of Czech people still use the name Czech Republic (when speaking English). Even in Czech, the literal translation ("Česko") only refers to one of the three main regions of the country (Bohemia, plus there is Moravia and Silesia), so even in our native language to be correct we often say Česká republika (the Czech Republic). Plus there is this whole debate about Czechia being easily confusable with Chechnya and it just sounding weird in general 😅. At the same time sometimes a country IS reffered to by its system of government (the United Kingdom, The United States of America), so even as a native I think it's perfectly acceptable to use the name Czech Republic.

I think this is an issue with how the country's name is taught in English, because in German and I'm used to say "Tschechien", which is the translation of Czechia.
But even Google Translate said "Tschechien" is "Czech Republic" and only showed "Czechia" als an alternative.
I think it's just the word sounds awful. The horrible blend of Slavic Č (Cz/Ч), hard c, silent h and ending it with latin "ia" which is generally not used in English with some exceptions.

I asked some Czech friends of mine a while back and they said they don’t personally have an opinion. I say Czechia because it’s easier but it feels like the difference between U.S.A and United States or even America. Don’t @ me for America I’m aware of the implications, it’s still a widely accepted colloquialism.

Since English is used internationally, a newly formed (named) country must fill in the box with the official name of the country and the short name, but the Czechs did not fill in the box with the short name and so only the long name was used. The short name was only added in 2016 and has only started to be used more in the last 3 years or so.

It's not, it's the Czech Republic. That is the official name that most people here use. Czechia is a translation of an archaism and it should remain as such, and many foreigners confuse it with Bohemia which is the central part of the country (the country is split into 3 parts, Bohemia, Silesia, and Moravia). Heck, I confuse the archaism with Bohemia all the time because nobody uses it and it sounds the same (Česko, Čechy).

Name "Czechia" is relatively recent, it was introduced in something like 2016-2017 if I'm not mistaken. Before that "Czech Republic" was widely used name. It's not that easy to move from name that was used for years to something new.

in Finnish it has usually and plainly been called Tšekki after it separated from its predecessor i.e. Tšekkoslovakia, although people often write it incorrectly as Tsekki, because the letter š is very rare and hard to reproduce on a keyboard.
there is no mention of a republic or in Finnish tasavalta, which stands for something along the lines of even/equal power/rule, except in formal usage of course.
Same for Denmark. We call it "Tjekkiet", where "tjek" is the root (a Czech person is called a "tjekke"); "-iet" is a common suffix for countries (like we also call Turkey, "Tyrkiet")
In Icelandic, it's just called "Tékkland," which is much nicer than adding a nonsensical Latin suffix -ia.

As a Federal Republic of German we actually sometimes use the short form of the formal name (BRD), originally mostly in contrast to the GDR (DDR) which obviously no longer exists, but nowadays it's just another name for the country that you use on a few occasions

My grandma taught me this because her parents were Czech immigrants who moved to Texas and started a farm during WW1. One thing I love about Texas is the large Czech influence in the state. There are tons of great places to buy kolaches which are my favorite breakfast pastry.

Why? It is literally the Czech part of Czech Rep. with "ee-a" or "ya" as a suffix. Every other language uses that form naturally.

In German, it's mostly refered to as "Tschechien", which shouldn't be confused with "Tschechei", which has rapey Third Reich connotations to it.

Unfortunately endonyms are not super common in speech. English speakers don't call China "Zhongguo", Greece "Hellada", or Japan "Nihon".

The use the formal name is usually because there's 2 countries that share a name and you want to talk about one of them exclusively:
Republic of Ireland -- Northern Ireland
Democratic Republic of Congo -- Congo
Or if you're comparing the state of goverment of a region over history:
Republic of South Africa -- Union of South Africa
Czech Republic -- Czechoslovakia
Once enough time has passed, people will drop the "Republic" from the name. It would make sense to say Czech Republic in 1993 but now it just seems to be lingering
Ok, idk if it's the same for other european countries/languages, but in Italy chzech republic is called "Repubblica ceca" and ceca (the most direct or simple translation for chezchia) means "blind" so it can be strange (but Understandable) to call it ceca
As a Czech, I hate calling my country "Czechia". The Czech Republic is generally used more as it does include other regions such as Moravia and Silesia in the "Republic" bit. I don't think any Moravian will ever say "Czechia", lol.
Czechia was made up by our politicians to either try to distinguish us from Chechnya (which laughably failed) or just push attention to this instead of their other failures (which worked, because I write this comment under this video).
So far I've only heard "Czechia" from foreigners and some keyboard fighters who had the guts to insult ppl for calling it "Czech Republic". It's usually more complicated than "official name". Please, call my country the Czech Republic.
"Czech Republic" includes exactly the same amount of Moravia and Silesia as does "Czechia". These regions are not contained or hidden in the word "Republic", as you seem to think. And BTW, the civic initiativ Česko/Czechia, which has been promoting the short name for decades, was founded in Brno, Moravia in 1997.
Czechia was not made up by politicians. The name is some 500 years old and was made up by Czech scholars who wanted to have a Czech sounding alternative to Bohemia in Latin. Both Czechia and the Czech Republic were selected as the official names of the country in 1993 by the expert committee. Unfortunately, politicians and bureaucrats ignored this and the short name for decades.
People use it because it's much more convenient than the long name. Calling the country "Czech Republic" all the time makes as much sense as calling France "the French Republic" all the time. None and no one does that. It would have been super annoying.
You don't like the name simply because you are not used to it. Give it some time and don't tell others not to use it. It's not worth it. After all, we are going to compete as Czechia at the next year's Olympics...

However, I appreciate your corrections and disagreement. Perhaps I sounded like I wanted to force people into using the name "Czech Republic", which would push me on the same side with "Czechia" guys, and that was not my intention.

The problem with that statement is that most people, including most Czechs, still say Czech Republic, cause Czechia was made official only a few years ago and it doesn’t sound the best
