I agree. Went with a scoped bolt rifle for 10 years. In the Pennsylvania woods I hunt, the scope was often a hindrance and much less enjoyable to carry. Went back to my lever actions a few years ago with iron sights and peep sight on my 1954 Marlin 35 and remembered what I forgot, in most cases it’s an advantage. 50 years of hunting to come back to this conclusion, I can be a slow learner. @@scottsgaragecave I reckon there is a time for everything, including scope sighted rifles. But in many instances there are better choices. The emphasis these days is to see how far away you can shoot something. How many animals are wounded is impossible to say. Very unethical in my opinion. And it isn’t as exciting as up close and personal. HOW you get your buck is more important than just getting it. Lever actions are classic deer rifles. And carry like a dream. To me the ultimate in deer hunting is to carry a flintlock. Flintlocks! The best of the best.

I tried to answer your questions as throughly as I could. I might add this. Give a long hard look at the Savage 99. They have the balance of a fine shotgun, the speed of a lever action, and the accuracy of a bolt action. The down side is they are no longer made. My favorite caliber in them is the .300 Savage. But it also comes in such calibers as .243, and .308. And the Browning BLR comes in long action calibers also , such as 30-06 and .300 Magnum. Thank you for watching.

Another great video, i like the old redfieldscopes in low profile 2x5,2x7,3x9. I saw at track of the wolf traditional looking peep sight. When I still hunt i use a Savage 99, but i sit mostly now and use a 1950 winchester model 70 270 with a redfieldscope 2x7 .

I have always been a lever action fan; I have a BLR 7mm 08 with a peep site but would like to scope it what is the preferred reticle for 1.5 x 5 Leopold? There are so many to choose?
Who the heck wouldn't put on a goretex jacket when they had those beautiful 40 year old buckskins on . If you're 80 you've gained enough sense not to do stupid things. I'm only 73 but trying to catch up to you.
Hello Dennis, hope all is well. I really enjoy your videos. I have one humorous question. With all the smoke coming out of the flintlock when shooting at deer, how do your know if you hit what you're aiming at? Takes a few minutes for the smoke to clear before you can see anything. I offended wondered how battles were fought in the civil war with all that smoke during battle. How did they know where to aim?
You don’t know visually. Obviously!!! Trust in your shooting ability. Flintlocks I particularly require a bit of practice. The flash in the pan obscures the target before the shot goes off. You have to follow through and not flinch. If you can shoot a flintlock well you can shoot anything. The smoke is what makes it fun. Thank you for watching.
Oh yeah. Lots of pistol. Did IDPA for a long time. Quick draw years ago. Long range single shot pistol. And hunt with handguns. And I make custom gun belts and holsters. You will seldom find me without a sidearm.
Wow I'm a little surprised by that I have many there fun to shoot as a matter a fact i just built a flint pistol from a new in the box 50 year old dixie gun works kit the quality is quite good as they made much better parts back then. Going on a trail shoot here in a couple of weeks will take the pistol and my Yeager rifle.@@dennispritchardoutdoors7882

Actually my favorite is the Leupold Dot reticle. Then the standard Duplex.
