The Assam Legislative Assembly recently passed the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024, replacing the colonial-era 1935 Act. This new law aims to prevent child marriages, enforce consent, and regulate polygamy by removing the role of kazis in marriage registration. Under the new system, marriages must be registered by a government official and meet specific criteria, including age requirements and residency conditions. The law mandates a 30-day notice period and allows objections to be raised. Critics argue the process is overly complex compared to the previous system.
