Justice Verma Committee Recommendations on Death Penalty | UPSC | Drishti IAS English

Following the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College, there has been a strong demand for the death penalty for the accused. The Justice J.S. Verma Committee, which influenced the 2013 criminal law amendments, had advised against recommending the death penalty for rape, arguing it would be a regressive measure. Despite this, the Union Cabinet adopted amendments that included the death penalty for severe rape cases, including gang rapes involving minors. The Verma Committee also suggested removing the marital rape exception and emphasized broader gender equality, but the government did not adopt these recommendations.

how they can say that death penalty will not detere .how many rapist have given death sentence till now only in 2012 case ,and that also given after many years ,so loop hole is in judiciary, speedy trail and separate bench should be there in sc so victim can get justice or we should prevent these incident so esi cheeze ho na ,holistic approach is needed ...

There is no resolution to the issue of rape by punishment of death!
The true reforms are needed which consists of holistic empowerment of women and the change in the mindsets of their masculine counterpart.
Moreover the True reforms which are the need of the hour,are faster trials and speedy implementation of judments,as justice delayed is justice denied.
The incidences of rape will still continue even if the death penalty is set as the example,because perpetrators know that it would take years to come to a conclusion for their committed act which motivates them to continue the nuisance of rapism....
