    As a survivor of something similar to shikishima, they handled the PTSD of what happened perfectly. As someone who is diagnosed with CPTSD, it actually hurt how good this movie was.
    I felt that its anti-war theme is one of the best ive seen, ever. However, its unable to compare to A single line said by Shikishima,
    "I want to live again.." this quote is burning into my brain. I feel his pain so much as i have felt something similar. no movie in the past ten years has evoked such feelings from me. it truly goes above and beyond.

      Exact same experience here for me. Your comment was spot on.
      That's why Shikishima's character arc hit me so hard.
      If you see Godzilla as representing the people who harmed you, and the damage he causes as trauma rather than physical damage, it actually fits quite well all together.

      Glad to see a character in Shikishima showing care towards others amidst his trauma. Compare it to Cate who is an Ahole to others. Diff in culture.

      Fellow CPTSD survivor here, I agree completely. When I was younger and didn't really understand what was going on, I identified with Godzilla, because he had this unspeakable rage towards the people who try to kill him for simple existing, who mutated him into what he is today. Shikishima was arguably the first character I saw myself in. When Tachibana tells him to choose to live, I really felt that in my heart. The past few years haven't been easy on me: my kidneys failed a few years ago. I got a new kidney right before COVID, and I've been stuck inside, afraid to go out. Tachibana telling Shikishima to choose to live almost felt like it was him telling me to choose to live.

      Truly people who lost a lot during the war only to have to deal with a bigger threat than the war itself.
      It truly must have felt like nothing had gone back to normal unless Godzilla was destroyed too

    Godzilla Minus One is easily one of my favorite Godzilla movies of all time. This was the first Toho Godzilla movie I ever saw in theaters. Me and my Dad saw the movie in theaters and we were both impressed with the movie. I still remember the audience applauding the movie after the credits rolled.

    Being a die hard Godzilla fan has never peaked so hard before; 2 movies in about half a year of time, one of which is probably the best movie of the year/top 3 Godzilla movie ever with the classic darker tone to it, another in a few months bringing us back to the childhood fun style of Godzilla, and a show that explores more of what we already love so much about the Monsterverse. Man we are eating so so good

    I don’t cry over movies or tv shows, I just don’t. But I will say, when I saw Minus One in theaters, that was probably the closest I’ve ever come to it. And of all things, it was during Godzilla’s DEATH scene; Y’know, the defeat of the unapologetically wrathful, vengeful, Villainous MONSTER?! Just, goddamn…
    And I saw it on the same day the GxK trailer dropped. So that was cool. 😊
    This is a really great time to be a Godzilla fan…

    The score in this film is insanely effective. The moments when Godzilla is attacking the Takao and then when he first unleashes his Atomic Breath are played to the aptly titled 'Divine' because you feel like you are witnessing something beyond human comprehension. When the Godzilla Suite kicks in as the veteran volunteers initiate their plan it strikes a completely new chord because instead of the Japanese Military being the ones fending off Godzilla in vain, it's a group of men who have seen war and are keenly aware of how they were used by their government but understand they are the only ones who can do this. The people stand up to defend their nation, for their lives, and it's incredibly moving and emotional. I truly wish this film could get recognized by Hollywood, but I don't think we'll see it happen. I think it's on the nomination list for VFX.
    Oh, and the treatment they gave Godzilla's roar in this film....is terrifying. It doesn't just feel like the roar we expect. It feels, literally, like something that shouldn't exist. It pierces and fills the soundscape where you can hear nothing else. It's ear shattering and you can tell it comes from something the size of Godzilla. Even in his pre-mutated form it's terrifying. 2014 and the subsequent films haven't quite got it. The roar still sounds like it exists in a vacuum or is just a sound effect layered on.

    • @soundtreks
      @soundtreks 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Great observations and I appreciate your focus on Sato’s score which is one of the best I’ve heard this year. Divine is aN apocalyptic cue. Some of the string writing almost recalls Arvo Part with those piercing string suspensions.

      Yes the roar is definitely the most terrifying modern Godzilla roar ever!
      I mean I thought the original roar from Godzilla was terrifying but minus one amps it up to a million.
      Legendary Godzilla roar is ok as a brutish creature with a way to intimidate other titans lower than him.

      Ikr me too just rambling how it compares to the original and then comparing it to the older films along with the legendary films.
      I was also thinking how the original 1954 and 1998 American films would have turned out if this Godzilla showed up in those films. What would Eiji Tsuburaya have done to create the atomic breath scene in this film in 1954.
      I just love Godzilla and this is the one Godzilla film that really makes me happy I loved Godzilla so much since I was 4.
      Godzilla is truly the king of the monsters

      I’ve been raving so much about this movie, it is literally the best Godzilla movie I have ever seen, it portrays Godzilla the way he was meant to be portrayed, as an abomination, he’s even more menacing than the first Godzilla, he’s like the GMK Godzilla because he’s just so filled with hatred and vengeance, instead of being the good heroic lizard like the mid 60’s Godzilla and Legendary Godzilla, he is just out for blood and I love it, they really made Godzilla scary again, The beginning scene where he first showed up on Odo Island gave me major Jurassic Park vibes, that scene was terrifying! the build up for Godzilla with the dead fish is really effective, I just love the horror aspect, you actually fear him instead of root for him, I remember talking about how we should get a Godzilla movie that makes you afraid of him instead of root for him after I watched Godzilla vs Kong and that’s exactly what we’ve got with Minus One, it is truly brilliant, I saw it twice, I watched the movie in RPX on the 1st with my mom and dad and I just saw it again yesterday evening for my birthday with my friends, I just love this damn movie.

    Just in time a day after I saw the movie myself in theaters!
    This movie not only hits home for me in bringing Godzilla close to his roots, but also holds meaning for me personally with the human aspects, especially the bond between Shikishima and Noriko. It mirrored situations I had gone through and faced, and still face in some compacity now, and as such made this movie even more powerful in my mind.

    Yes, there are links to previous Godzilla films. But did anyone catch the link between "Godzilla Minus One" and "Seven Samurai"? It was the Shiro Mizushima character who was in a similar position as with Toshiro Mifune's Kikuchiyo. Both were not warriors and both almost the same word for word, were pleading with the others to take them along the dangerous mission.

    • @kh884488
      @kh884488 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a great observation!
      I thought Godzilla -1 reminded me of Seven Samurai insofar as it was a small team of main characters on the minesweeping ship that needed to team up in order to fight the monster, similar to how the Seven Samurai fight the bandits.
      One thing that the Seven Samurai and Godzilla -1 also have in common is that although personal heroics are important, teamwork and coordination are also vital for success.
      Finally, the Seven Samurai was filmed in the same year as the original 1954 Godzilla film.

      Godzilla was a major part of my life since I was 4 and since I was 12 I only thought there were 10 films but then getting into high school realizing there were more. More films starting at Godzilla 1954 all the way to Godzilla final wars in 2004. At that time we didn’t have a Godzilla film since 2004 until LegendaryFilms bought the rights in 2014. Then Toho made there own film in 2016 which was a way modernize and updated Godzilla’s origin but didn’t leave as much as an impact ad this film.

    I cant emphasize enough how much I admire and respect the way you described the love and joy you felt for each character and their arc. You gave such an objective point of view that was UNDOUBTEDLY and mercilessly authentic. This is why i love your channel so much other than the fact that I'm a massive Godzilla fan since childhood. I wish I could have Godzilla conversations with you bro. I really do. Not to mention the support and viewings so far are for a subtitled film. Due to visual issues my wife's best friend can't read subtitles well enough to keep up with films or video that use them. She depends on dubs. Purists who say "subs not dubs," keep in mind for some it's an accessibility issue, and I hope there can be a dub that does the film justice. Personally, I love the film as is and wouldn't have missed that wonderful acting for the world. But I'm floored by the success it's continuing to have - even in my remote neck of upstate New York, the showings continue at least into next week. Ganbatte kudasai, Gojira!

    • @treykoyawena4443
      @treykoyawena4443 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dubs are good when done correctly but doesn’t mean it ruins the film so yeah all you people who say dubs are bad is because you never watched a good dub.
      It’s an art form to dub a Japanese dubbed film because sometimes the performance is lost in the end result. Plus sometimes I don’t want to read through a movie too

    They did a clever thing with real-world history to move Godzilla's origin back to 1946. The original Godzilla was inspired by the contamination of the Lucky Dragon No. 5 by the Castle Bravo H-bomb test at Bikini Atoll. The implication is that Godzilla was created by the Castle Bravo shot or something like it. But there was an earlier series of atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, Operation Crossroads in 1946 (one of which created a large amount of damaging fallout), and *that* is what Godzilla Minus One says created Godzilla.

    This is the first time since the originals that a Godzilla movie focuses on drama. And drama, or conflict, is what makes a story a story. It’s not just effects and monsters, any more than Star Wars is just effects and spaceships and robots. Story is of utmost importance, because it gives IMPORTANCE to the elements, the characters of a movie. A good Story is the what makes a book or a movie WORTHWHILE …
    Godzilla was a real threat to the human characters …Godzilla is a force in this movie. Not an anti hero…he’s the looming doom.
    They integrated the Godzilla concept and the dramatic needs of the main characters in a way that makes it difficult to have one without the other.

    Agree with everything you said. This is the first Godzilla movie where I was TERRIFIED of the atomic breath instead of excited. I actually shed tears when he used it in Ginza, seeing the civilians realizing they are doomed and hugging their loved ones really touched me.
    I think it has the best sense of scale in any Godzilla movie. Those ground shots were perfect. The scenes where he just filled the whole screen, I was leaning forward in my seat to see every detail in the cgi.
    Also every time Godzilla was on screen I was with my mouth open, jaw dropped. I was gripping the arm rests of my seat, eyes bulging out. It was an amazing theater experience and I’m so glad I watched it in theater.
    The movie really played with my emotions because it is a constant rollercoaster of “We are gonna live!” “We are gonna die!” I was genuinely wondering if the plan to kill Godzilla would work, I was actually worried the movie would have a dark ending and I am glad it didn’t.
    The soundtrack is just phenomenal, I was not expecting the trailer music to be an actual theme in the movie. The soundtrack has a sense of despair, hopelessness, suffering, but also hope. And yeah this is the definitive modern Godzilla movie to me, a 10/10.

That was incredibly well said bro!! And you're right there's not really been any other movie that's treated his atomic breath like that. In fact I'm even wondering if any other Godzilla movie director ever even thought to treat it as something devastating and tragic rather than something oh so cool I want to see it again type thing. Fantastic review man! I absolutely loved it as well and would give it a 9 out of 10 too. It was definitely one of the most competent Godzilla films on par with 1954 classic and is on my top ten. The only thing that I would have added is some islanders on odo, more of America's reaction to Goji since we were there and Goji to have a bit more screen time. I still can't believe how good everything looked on that budget, truly amazing! You echo my sentiments on 2014 Godzilla to a T. Even though I do enjoy the movie for what it is, I've always felt somewhat resentful for the bait and switch that they pulled on us with it.
    Minus One, I feel, is largely the movie that 2014 should have been - and now that we have it I genuinely feel at peace.
    I've only seen it once, but I cried multiple times throughout - both from the emotional beats of the human stories, and also from Godzilla's portrayal. From his attack on the destroyer, to his Ginza attack, this is the Godzilla that I've always wanted to see on screen.
    Bravo, Toho. Bravo.

    This movie was quite literally Everything I want In a godzilla movie, especially one that is being shown in american theaters. The monsterverse is great and all but it can't top having a godzilla movie that really makes you FEEL something, have a deep message that people can understand and resonate with. I’d like some who speaks Japanese to explain the ejection seat. I watched the movie with English subtitles and it seemed clear that the mechanic built the ejection seat, however friends who watched the movie with different subtitles understood it differently. For example, the German version seems to suggest that the ejection seats was already in the plane.

    • @VictusPrime
      @VictusPrime 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      The ejection seat was already installed in the plane, either by the Germans themselves or the seat was developed in Germany and later shipped to Japan to be used in the Shinden. That's why when there's a close up of the seat you can clearly see German handwriting on it. Germany did actually manufacture and ship wartime parts during that era to the Axis Powers, and they were known for developing ejection seats to be used in jet fighters and rear prop planes (like the Shinden or German Dornier Do 335 fighter). So it's entirely possible that Germany had delivered this seat for the Shinden before Germany surrendered in WW2.
      I guess the idea is that the main lead, Koichi, didn't know what it was as Japanese fighter planes didn't have ejection seats installed during the war. The mechanic of course figured it out or knew what it was already and encouraged Koichi to use it instead of sacrificing himself after forgiving him for the deaths on Odo Island.

      @@DMan1954 it worked so well in IMAx. Had the same visceral wallop as the attack on Chrissie from Jaws (my all time favourite movie). Minus One is likely to occupy a top spot in my top 10 faves but I want to see it a few more times to see if it endures. I suspect that the spectacle will not be as amazing on my 65” led tv but the human story will shine through in a smaller viewer setting.

    I just got finished watching the movie and WOW! This is EASILY THE BEST Reiwa Era Godzilla movie to date. The pacing, the tone, the characters, the portrayal of Godzilla (in how terrifying yet tragic he is in the film), the destruction scenes, the character development of Shikishima & Tachibana...oh my God(zilla), it was done so well.
    I easily give this a 9/10 as well, if not a 9.5/10. I would place this movie in the same echelon as GMK, Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs Destoroyah, & G'1954, but in other ways, it surpasses the former three on that list. Since I'm planning to write a quality Godzilla fanfiction series, I can proudly say that Godzilla: Minus One is one of the handful of G-movies that I'll be using as inspiration/reference/motivation for making my G-series as good as it can be.

    Dear, D Man1954, I am a Japanese and thank you for your comments. But you have missed most important thing about Godzilla for Japanese people. Let me ask you following questions. Q1. Why did Godzilla come to Ginza and mysteriously disappeared from the movie? This is same as the Sin-Godzilla. In case of Sin-Godzilla, it came to Tokyo station, but he stopped there. Why and why the locations are so important to Japanese people? Q2. After Godzilla died, why the people on the ships saluted him? In the 1954 Godzilla movie, people song the beautiful music and in Sin-Godzilla, end of Godzilla’s tail shows human like figures. All these are related. So why? To answer these questions, you have to be like a Japanese. First of all, there are still many dead Japanese solders bodies not recovered from deep Pacific oceans. We could not even give them proper funnels. We know all of them wanted to come back, but they couldn’t. In Japanese ancient mythology, two gods, husband and his wife made Japanese islands. The husband’s name is “Izanagi” and the wife’s name is “Izanami”. Izanami(wife) died after having a fire baby. Izanagi(husband) loved her so much, so he went to the world of after life to meet her, but her body has decayed and became like a monster. Izanami(wife) became so angry and chased her husband. This story tells us that we love our dead family and want to see them but their dead body decay and changed. Godzilla came to Ginza and scream to all of us include our emperor. See, Godzilla is like a “Tatari-gami(kami)”. Tatarigami is a god who caused and give judgement. Only thing we can do is to calm him down.

    • @DMan1954
      @DMan1954  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for your comment, Kenji-San.
      How does the Tatarigami relate to the other gods? What was the importance of stopping at Ginza? I would love to hear more! I have never heard these takes on Godzilla before and I believe I can help inform Westerners of them.

    • @yabaikenji
      @yabaikenji 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Almost every town in Japan has their own story of Tatari-gami (kami:god). Tatari-gami is a god of cause and judgement. Godzilla was a Tatari-gami of Ohdo-shima. In Shinto religion, one of the most important jobs of a priest is to calm Tatarigami down. Emperor of Japan is a living deity and highest priest of Shinto. Please take a look at map of Tokyo. You see Ginza and Tokyo station; both are in front of imperial palace. Japanese soldiers are emperor’s soldered and they should be back to Yasukuni-shrine to rest. By the way, Yasukuni-Shrine is locating next to imperial palace. However, Godzilla is cursed by the atomic radiation. So, he came back, but not welcomed and screamed in Ginza. Japanese movie directors want to portrait Godzilla like some kind of divine figure. That is the reason Japanese Godzilla walk like a Noh-theater actor. Entire movie is a ritual and a process of calming the Tatari-gami (Godzilla) down and give him proper funnel. Only problem is Godzilla is curse by US atomic-bomb and the radiation, so he cannot die and continue to be Tatari-gami. Noriko has affected by the G-cell and as Koichi’s war end, but her war started. This reminds us the suffering of many survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki from radiation. Many of them have to live rest of their long life in pain and agony. Question is, did our war truly ended? I think by knowing this, you can enjoy Godzilla more.

    • @DMan1954
      @DMan1954  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Woah!!! I didn’t realize that! It makes a lot of sense. When I was in Tokyo, I visited Ginza, Hibiya, Chiyoda City and noticed that in all movies, Godzilla never cross the moat.
      That makes Godzilla fam more sympathetic. He will never find peace. I hope that if they do a sequel, Noriko is able to find peace.
      It also makes sense why Godzilla comes back even more monstrous every time he should be killed. When Shikishima blows up half his face, it regenerates with scar tissue and makes Godzilla scarier. Maybe to show his corpse is decaying.

    10/10 but I feel it could've had one more Godzilla appearance leading upto the final fight.
    It didn't feel like a movie rather a window into 1947. The human story is so genuine & honest ( unlike the horse dung AppleTV show) that the threat could've easily been anyother besides Godzilla & it still would've felt real.
    A classic & will remain relevant forever.

    I feel there are two types of Godzilla movies. I classify them as "Novels" and "Stories". (Okay, so I'll admit it's not the best metaphor, but...) Godzilla (1954), Shin Godzilla (2016), and Godzilla Minus One (2023) are the novels, and the rest (to varying degrees) are stories I really enjoy.
    I compare this to my reading. There are novels like Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" and Frank Herbert's "Dune" that I'd classify as novels; but then there are quick & fun reads that I enjoy like Kenneth Robeson's (Lester Dent) "Doc Savage" and Louis L'amour's Westerns, Rex Stout's "Nero Wolfe" books. (And I compare my reading to dining out, it's nice to go to someplace fancy for a full meal, but more often it's fun to go for fast-food.)
    As always thank you so very much for the videos.
    And I got a laugh at you're "I never thought" opening... I became a fan of Kaiju (and Godzilla) in 1968, when I friend and I started tuning into a UHF channel out of San Francisco and watching "Ultraman". It was all in Japanese (no subtitles) (I was eight), a language I didn't speak, but we loved the "big monster" fights. I've been a fan ever since.

    Two things I have to say.
    First of all I love your analysis and your takeaway from the film. I especially agree with it being the right film at the right time.
    That being said I dont want this to come off as hostile or contrarian. Being a fan of Godzilla since childhood, as someone who loves both sides of the character. I have to say at least if social media is anything to go by this film has done irreparable damage to the franchise (or maybe its just a cycle i dont know) forever since now people expect every Godzilla film going forward to be as dark and as serious as this film. Not going to say people are wrong , i want good human stories too but we can do this without 5 back to back depressing Godzilla films. Another reason i feel this way is because Godzilla is intrinsically more linked and important to Japan than to the West or other countries so its easier for Japan to tell a darker more bold story with Godzilla.
    Just thinking about how Godzilla 2014 would have worked if Godzilla was the villain. I don't think it would have worked since he was written to be basically invincible the film would only have "realistically " ended with San Francisco looking like Ginza did in minus one with the citizens looking on in horror as Godzilla leaves, powerless to stop him (or maybe that's just my thoughts and/or lack of creativity). If you have any thoughts on how a theoretically villain Godzilla take on G14 would have gone I'd love to discuss it.
    My main point being i know how difficult it is to make a true grounded villainous Godzilla story and the care that needs to be taken. So i don't expect Hollywood to do that nor do i demand it (because its been shown demanding something doesnt really change anything when it comes to Hollywood) I just kind of roll with the punches. If i like it I like it, if not well i dont have to watch it again. I don't like seeing the fandom tear itself apart attacking each other because of Godzillas different interpretations.
    Personally speaking as someone who wants to try and tell a more "serious " Godzilla story i still in my thoughts end up including the more fantastical elements because they're so ingrained into my understanding of Godzilla. So again I understand how difficult it must be to make an icon most look up to like a super hero be the bad guy who dies at the end.
    As a fan whose seen the franchise shift over time and opening up and maturing to the idea of Godzillas darker roots ive grown to love and accept Godzilla in almost every interpretation. I don't know I think internet discourse and this film not being talked about as a good movie but used as a beating stick to other films including other Godzilla films by fans and youtubers just rubs me the wrong way. It's like we pretend that if the next 10 movies in a row were just like this that we wouldn't get equally burnt out and the fact that having to keep coming up with ways to beat Godzilla would be mentally exhausting. What I'm trying to say is that balance is key. Godzilla wouldn't be around as the icon he is today if he wasn't able to adapt his role in storytelling.
    If you were able to read this i want to thank you again for your perspective which I do agree with. I can't wait to watch the film again when it comes to dvd. If you have any advice on how Godzilla should be written or portrayed in a story please do share.
    Have a great day.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it's a cycle. The very first Showa film was dark and somber and grounded in a way none of the subsequent ones really were. And then you have the horrifying imagery in G vs. Hedorah trying to hammer home the environmental message (though juxtaposed with goofy stuff), the relative groundedness of the first Heisei film, then Godzilla vs. Destoroyah reaching for gravitas while killing off its serialized Godzilla, GMK inverting all the symbolism of "Godzilla as defender of Japan" and actually addressing Japanese war atrocities in a way that not even Minus One did... to some extent, the franchise has been here before.
      And people do get tired of grim-and-grounded stories too; I'm on record saying it's about time for Batman to get wacky again.
      I think that right now, the Monsterverse is the home of the more fantastical, "Godzilla versus X" kaiju story, with nutty tales about Monarch and the Hollow Earth and King Ghidorah and supersonic train tunnels. Those movies are more expensive but they also pull bigger box office than Minus One has. And while I'm personally not as into that as I am Minus One, it's fine that there's a home for it.

    Godzilla Minus One is absolutely a masterpiece and the best film in 2023! I love most of the characters in the film except for Akitsu. I noticed why I couldn't like him because his background was not pictured at all. I could have liked him more if the reason why he was overly cheerful and comical right after the war was implied in the film.

    To be fair, the military was very, very hamstrung militarily because of the disarming of Japan post WW2. During this time period historically, the Allies were the defense force of Japan in all but name. The movie goes out of its way to say the destroyers they were able to use had been on their way to the UN. Most of the Japanese military had been disarmed and discharged after WW2. The veterans who volunteered are basically the military.

All that said the final act was as campy as any Godzilla films. Sink him and then raise him up and cause decompression sickness..... thats silly. The actual end was great. While I will agree that the little girl who played Akiko did a wonderful job for a girl her age, there were two moments in the movie that almost ruined it for me. The 2 times she cried were done with CGI face replacement effects. And it ruined her face. It made her look animatronic both times. Mind you when we could hear her crying without seeing her face, it hurt. You could feel it and I about cried. But the CGI face took me out of the scene just as fast. The later when Shikishima is about to leave for the mission and has Akiko sit beside him and she cries again suddenly, you could see the CGI face change. Again that took me out of an otherwise good scene.
    However those were my only two complaints about the movie. the Rest was absolutely stunningly made.

    My only nit to pick with the movie, it could have used a second city destruction scene. Like if Koichi had to lure him away from another heavily populated area of Tokyo. Minor issue

    "Shin Godzilla was a great Godzilla solo film, it wasnt what Godzilla was meant to be?" Both great in thier own right, but Damn, how can YOU even say that, you cant.

    So maybe I'm wrong here because I've heard this a few times from other youtubers. But I'm pretty sure the ejector seat was already built into the aircraft. There is a scene where the mechanic notices the writing on the back of the seat not to mention the camera shows a shot of it by itself as well. I may be wrong I only did see it twice lol not seven times. And, I also know the ejector already being built in kind of goes against the theme of the Japanese government not caring about its citizens. But I still believe it was already there
