During the pandemic, there was actually a small online movement to "cancel" Robert Downey Jr. over this role because a bunch of people suddenly found Tropic Thunder during lockdown and totally misunderstood the context of the Kirk Lazarus character. But that movement fell apart rather quickly when it was pointed out that it wasn't blackface with the intent to denegrate black people. The whole character is a satire of Method actors who go to extreme and even inappropriate lengths for their roles in order to be taken seriously and win awards.
And despite the outrage people had over Kirk Lazarus, somehow no one was triggered by Simple Jack, nor did anyone try to cancel Ben Stiller over Tugg Speedman "goin' full retard" with his insensitive portrayal of a mentally handicapped character. It shows how hypocritical and selective their outrage was.

I don't usually listen to the commentary on DVDs or Blu Rays, but one of my friends told me it was essential to with this film.
RDJ was one of the people on the commentary and in the film he has a line something like "I don't drop character until the DVD commentary is done". He does the whole film commentary with the black voice and as soon as he removes the wig in the movie, he starts doing commentary in his own voice ... now that is method and a perfect throw back to that one line in the movie.

Fun fact: The character Les Grossman was not in the original script. Ben Stiller showed the script to Tom Cruise asking for advice. Cruise came up with the character on the spot and offered himself to play it. He then asked for fat hands and being able to dance. Stiller was reluctant but agreed anyway and wrote the part thinking he could just cut the scene if he doesn't like it. He eventually came fully on board once he saw Cruise in full costume.

The commentary is just as funny as the movie. Ben Stiller is like Will Ferrell in that he's funny but he takes his work very seriously. Ferrell was serious on the Elf commentary but Jon Favreau's director commentary was hilarious. So here's Stiller, seriously talking about the writing, the concept, his work as a director, and RDJ is dropping hilarious comments as Lincoln Osiris. Then Jack Black is mostly sitting with them, trying not to laugh himself to death over what RDJ is doing. I've listened to that commentary a few times.

It took me years to figure out the throw away line "I'm a Rooster Illusion" and what I think happened is reality hit our boy and he realizes he's a fake soldier and his career is tanked. Now the red string on the cork board I used to come up with that is 1, the scene this takes place in is all about actors hitting moments of Clarity. 2, an Illusion isn't real it's just a hallucination it's not real and 3. Why Rooster? Rooster is an Alice in Chains song about a viet nam vet which contains the line "walking tall machine gun man, they spit on me in my home land". He tanked his entire career with simple jack and now he's playing a soldier to try to get it back. This is also why he chose to stay, until he didn't. He's a hostage playing the roll that killed his career but people love him.

What I love about this movie and it’s not often mentioned is that it’s a hatchet piece on the Hollywood industrial complex. The excesses of Tinseltown are exposed, in the most satirical way, in the form of method acting, drug abuse, technical effects mishaps, etc and has a character that epitomizes each excess (Tom Cruise as “Les Grossman,” the king of the fiefdom, MM as the production runner, Nolte as the lying and deceitful scriptwriter/author, the director literally in over his head, plus many more).
Needs several rewatches to get the subtext of Hollywood excesses and how the film goes about exposing each one. Absolutely brilliant.

Legitimately one of the most well written films in history. The amount of writing talent that went into this and thought... it's impressive as hell. And then to put it to film and pull it off in a way that isn't completely insulting to pretty much everyone... genius. And the cast. Who the hell manages to get a cast this stacked. You've just seen one of the best comedies of the last 25 years, when the movie industry still had some cojones and nobody got offended but anything...

    • @unkindestcut

People didn’t get offended because most of them realized that Blackface was a joke at the expense of a narcissistic hugely successful method actor, not at the expense of minorities.
Now, the indiscriminate usage of the R-word still offended many, as that wasn’t handled as carefully.

This actually has some really important commentary on disability. The “don’t go full r*” speech. People don’t want the reality, that for many with disability there’s nothing inspiring. They won’t get better. It scares people.
So movies feed them inspiring stories of people with disability who do get better and achieve things. But for most disabled people that’s not the reality.

"I'm a dude (Neil Armstrong) playing a dude (Father O'Malley) disguised as another dude (Sgt. Lincoln Osiris)."
Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) has completely forgotten who he is...
Kirk Lazarus was pulled from the refrigerator upon reentry to Earth's atmosphere and through his agent found he had to be a gay priest. Of course Neil Armstong lacked acting experience, but went for Immersive Acting, but without the ability to remember his lines he dropped that and let the script read him. Why not? He's a strong astronaut who usually succeeds at things, but Neil Armstrong found it was hard to lose the persona of being gay and not knowing how to be a black man chose the "Roots" character of Chicken George for his accent, but no doubt it was unnerving to see himself in the mirror when he heard he was scared of himself. Neil Armstrong probably found it hard to understand himself as a black man.
You gotta give credit to Tugg Speedman for knowing how to crack his opponent during an argument.

The biggest controversy was not Downey Jr.'s character or portrayal. Yeah some didn't care for it. Others admired his commitment to the point where they felt it was very well done, others didn't recognize him.
The biggest thing of all was the "Simple Jack" character and the "Never go full retard." conversation in the film.
There were literally scores of people with Down's Syndrome outside of theaters protesting the film. Including other groups of people with physical disabilities. But all in all, every bit of controversy did the film a lot of good as people were hearing about the walk outs, the protests, and everything... thus making them all the more curious and they ended up going to see the movie anyway.

RDJ was nominated for an Oscar for this role. Had it not been for the legendary, stunning performance of Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight that same year, he very well may have won it.
