    18:56 - I like how James just finished telling us his crazy movie idea adapting It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World about Universal monsters - including Norman Bates - on a far flung treasure hunt which takes them onto a boat that gets attacked by Jaws, but tells Mike that replacing the Stooges with Dracula's mistresses was "stretching it".

    Honestly I went into "Dracula Untold" expecting it to be pretty bad but I kept waiting for THAT moment where the film gets truly bad and it never happened. It wasn't great but it was entertaining and was a pretty unique take on Dracula.

      could not agree more, as a classic horror fan i went in with very low expectations but came out pleasantly surprised. i like how they linked the vlad the impaler historical events, which somewhat inspired the character of dracula, to the legendary myths

      I feel pretty badly for the cast, director and especially legendary makeup artist Rick Baker because the studio came in and insisted on taking out most of the real effects and replacing them with terrible CGI. The late 2000s and early 2010s ruined so many otherwise great movies with sh^tty CGI. Had the studio not interfered so much, the movie would've been a hit.

      What was even the point of that cameo by the Three Stooges? The camera looks at them (as firemen) for three seconds and that's it.

  • @PlagueOfGripes
    @PlagueOfGripes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +122

    How do you even bring something like the universal monsters into the modern age? The films couldn't possible be scary, and you wouldn't want them to be comedies or play them up as thrillers and then cap off the narrative with a lumbering mummy. I know classic and B movie film fans want them just to want them, but they'd probably be better served to stay in the past as classics. The only one I'd like to see is a Stokeresque Dracula film, although that's because it's bringing a lot more to the table than just a costume.

      +PlagueOfGripes I'd totally watch an action movie with the Universal Monsters
      Even if it was awful it'd be the kind of awful I could get behind

    • @6661313
      @6661313 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +PlagueOfGripes don't know, they could do something more like 30 days of night, but with a more regal lead vampire that would be dracula. the wolfman could cross the best parts of a slasher film with the unrelenting feel of the terminator, and even Ginger snaps was a good take on werewolves.
      frankinstien and the mummy could be harder, but with 'the monster' it could be done, have the doctor and assistant killing people for parts, and the later half maybe a body horror film where the brain is aware of who they were and what they became.

    • @CidTheGargoyle
      @CidTheGargoyle 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +PlagueOfGripes I think they could make a decent Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot. Enough people are afraid of large bodies of water and what could be underwater that they could play that fear up. They did well enough with the Benico Del Toro Wolfman that the viability of classic monster reboots aren't entirely out of the question.

    • @blackhelldemon
      @blackhelldemon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +PlagueOfGripes Agreed. Most of these movies are well known to movie viewers in one way or another. There isn't a whole lot of new grounds they can tread with them.

      +Animation King#1 They haven't ended them, these discussions are part of monster madness. James has said several times in the past that he loves monster madness almost as much as he loves doing the Nerd videos, they just take a huge time dedication to produce.
      I think with James having a baby and everything he's just decided to go this unscripted route on a lot of videos this year to cut down on the editing process.

    I respect the Universal Monster films. But Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Leather face, Chucky hell even leprechaun. In a way they are my "Universal" monsters. I grew up with those films, I honestly didn't discover Universal Monsters until the 5th grade. I know, Sad but true. Wolfman is my favorite Monster Btw. I liked the remake as well, mostly for the gore.

      +Harperlarp I lived at Mexico at the time. When I was around 6 is when my cousins showed me 'Childs play' and "Leprechaun" all the other ones I mentioned. There was no where I could find any universal monster films. Until I moved to California and my history teacher showed us 'Dracula' for Halloween and that's when I discovered the rest of them. I never knew about them until I went to California pretty much.

    I've got your McGuffin right here: The Philosopher's Stone! The beauty of the stone is (according to legend) you can use it for whatever you want. So maybe the Wolfman wants it to cure his Lycanthrope, or Frankenstein's Monster wants it to turn into a real man, Drac wants to use it with a spell to resurrect his favorite bride, etc. You're welcome! ;)

      Maybe they all meet up at the start of the film and actually discuss their modern interpretations. Dracula looks at Coppola's film adaptation of him and complains about everything EXCEPT the three women in his castle and then sees twilight and really goes berserk giving us a more hardcore horror version of Hotel Transylvania''s 'this is how we're represented now' line. The other monsters have similar reactions to some of their adaptations and they all go to Hollywood to try and get better movies made.

    A beautiful bride could be the Macguffin. Not just any bride though, a heavenly one; compassionate, understanding, maybe w bit of a monster herself but she'll love any one of her suitors; they just need to wake her.
    Seriously it fits. What does Frankenstein's creature want? A loving bride or companion. Mummy? Oh resurrect a dead princess and mummify her, (but still). Dracula? Well at least in the Coppola film which was good, he wanted his wife as well. The phantom? Ask Queen. :P (Somebody to Love)
    It makes perfect sense. :)

    The McGuffin should be some kind of "Monster Cure.' Think about it, the Wolf Man doesn't want to turn into a monster, Frankenstein's Monster doesn't want to be persecuted, being the immortal Dracula is more of a curse than anything else...it should be something that could transform them into normal men...

    I think the Wolfman (2010) is extremely underrated, and had it been released four months earlier on Halloween 2009 it would have performed much better. It really had great atmosphere, and was set up for a sequel at the end with Aberline being bitten. He could have starred in a sequel as the "Werewolf of London". Then the London setting could have been used to springboard Dracula, or the Invisible Man, etc.

    I do love the Universal classic monsters, and every "reboot" past the original couple of cycles, outside of THE MONSTER SQUAD (if one could argue that was one), has been pretty bad. This idea, I've heard being thrown around, of making the monsters some sort of superhero team in a shared universe is something I hope they never go with. I don't want any more VAN HELSING or I, FRANKENSTEIN films, thanks. However, if they could find some good writers to property rip-off Alan Moore's (everyone does it, just ask him) THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, or better yet, The Wold Newton Universe, then we might have something to work with.

    As someone from the Future, the Mummy will bomb and Universal will put aside the idea of a shared universe to instead focus on making solid individual updated films. The Invisible man will be inspired by the original film, but will take things in a more modern direction. It will be a huge hit.

    I'm actually extremely interested with what you said in a Monster Madness years ago with Fritz and Ygor. I've wanted to see a movie based around Ygor. You'd start out with Fritz getting caught and put to trial, and he gets hanged. The rest of the movie would be based off what Ygor does before Son, and it would end with his perspective with Ghost.

Those movies are classic and timeless.

    I was given a Book and Record in 1975 called "A story of Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein". It was a read along with the record narration comic book in the LP cover. I thought it was a great story that used 3 variations of the universal monsters. It would make a good jumping off point for an action oriented retelling. Neal Adams did the art for that book and he did the cover art for some of the marvel horror comic series talked about in this video.

    3:05 In late may of this year I went to the monster part of the park and ate at the monster restaurant. It was part of our tour and they gave cool facts about the monster and the actors , they even showed was some real props (not the ones already on display). It was like looking at film's history, from JAWS and Jurassic Park to Frankenstein. I highly recommend that anyone who is a film buff take the tour and see the place , It was super cool. Before that watch all of the movies of course. The tour is cheap as hell and lasts for around 2 to 3 hours. It was the highlight of the park for me.

    Should have tied in Stephen King to the Wizard of Oz. The reason that Dorothy ran away in the actual movie was that they wanted to kill her dog. Have it so, in the horror version, they do kill her dog, she buries it in the Pet Semetery, and Toto comes back without a soul. Like in 'Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man' Dorothy is told that there is a man (Dr Frankenstein) who can solve her problem (in this instance, by giving Toto his soul back), and so she goes on a quest to find him.

    How about the classic gothic horror of the Universal monsters versus the insane, interdimensional creeping chaos of H.P. Lovecraft? Frankenstein versus Herbert West! Creature from the Black Lagoon versus the residents of Innsmouth! Renfield escapes from Arkham Asylum! Imhotep versus Nyarlathotep! Van Helsing teams up with Randolph Carter to solve the mysteries of the Necronomicon and save the world from the combined forces of Dracula and Abdul Alhazred! And then they all team up to take on Cthulhu! It would be fucking crazy.
