Made one this weekend. Took a little longer than expected to make the launcher and a couple rockets.
But, wow. These flew higher than our normal rockets. The kids loved it.
I was able to buy everything as described except I couldn't get the same size brass fittings. Instead the size between the brass fittings had to be larger to find a combination that kept the same size hose barb and PVC pipe size.
Fun!
Remember when TH-cam had video responses? Yeah, those were the good days...
Kip, your videos ROCK. Thanks so much for the projects!!!
@jackol900 The rocket costs about .25 to make. Not the launcher
This is pretty cool. Lately my son and I have been making compressed air cannons. We've shot them through televisions, toilets, vases, etc. We have also fired a nerf dart over 75 yards. Have vids on my page showing them.
Yo its been 10 years😳
@@pizon_l0kal it's now been 11 years 👁👄👁

That's pretty cool! I can't wait to try that with my kids! :D
this was the one of the best... great job. thumbs up!
this was a really interesting project..thank you.
Its fine now. I built it with the sprinkler valve and its so much fun!
Very nice video with vivid illustrations...Thanks for your time !
Love,
kris.
This is my favorite makemagazine video
i cant do your projects, but i enjoy watching you doing it.
This is something I'd be tempted to make.
This is a brilliant idea, incorporate a burst disk after the sprinkler valve ( simple as masking tape in a coupler near the end) this would give the rocket much more "power" if the chamber to barrel ratio is more than 3:1 because the air pressure is spread through the valve chamber and barrel.
wow this is so cool this is the main reason i got in to engineering and science.
When using pvc cement it helps to do quarter turns to better spread the cement and great videos
Nice job on the video. I made one with some modificaitons. Worked great for my pack.
Great oppourtunities in that basic idea
4:55 If you look under the rocket you'll see that it breaks the sound barrier, Which is freakin amazing.
such wow such true.
ps do you maybe have a slowmo app?
That is just high pressure air coming out.
xD
Man it can't broke the sound barrier cause it's a lot more faster then that rocket (it's velocity is 340.29 m / s )....
kden
This is really cool I'm going to have build one of these.
fantastic work, no money new technologies good work
great video, please do more like this
One of the coolest weekend projects tbh :P
Yo its been 10 years😳
@@pizon_l0kal ⚠️ God has said in the Quran:
🔵 { O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 )
🔴 [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 )
🔵 And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 )
🔴 But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 )
🔵 And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 )

i can't wait to build it
Looks like I have something to do Saturday morning now!!!
WAAOOO man ! ! amazing.
Nice shot, Kip!
Kipkay started it all for me years ago I remember this video being posted
"looks like I nailed it, just enough distance..." yeah right! :D
Yo its been 10 years 😳
I really liked to watch this video!!! thanks
WONDERFUL JOB
PLEASE KEEP IT UP
THANKS
nice work
Great project!
As you are using a sprinkler valve, could you do the same basic project and make a water rocket ? (i.e. Compressed water and air instead of just compressed air??)
really nice
well done man
This looks like fun! Unfortunately the link to the blog fails, tho. I'll check again tomorrow, maybe it will be up by then.
Simple project. Cool.
its really cool !!
Looks like fun.
Cool!!! that's quite a distance!!
awesome sir
Yeah Kip, that's awesome that you built that rocket and all, but what's REALLY awesome is you ALSO made an air cannon...that's MYTHBUSTERS cool!
I had a "Wham-O" back in the day!
Used the "free air" at the corner gas station
very nice
Its amazing!let me try one
True dat. In the end I did end up building it with the sprinkler valve and your right, it is cooler.
That was awesome
it WORKS JUST GREAT
thx man
i'll make a lot of 'hem
that was awesome
so cool!
KipKay's back! He has such a great screen presence.
Another quality vid from Kipkay! :D
You can also drill a hole in one PVC end cap and install that tire valve stem right into it. That will remove a lot of the reducers, fittings and the hose, a lot less clunky.
AWESOME
YAY!!! kipkay is back!
Awesome!
well it worked the first few times as you can see in my vids but it eventually died on me. i was really hoping to use an electric trigger. i wound up using an air gun and then scrapped the whole project and used a mechanical lever. was more reliable.
but thanks KipKay for the vids. You i inspire me to no end. :)
Its nice all your videoes i find it very interresting ;)
@zivxx its 25 cents for the rocket. the PVC is cheap and the sprinkler valve is about $15.
that is so cool
I made it Its AWSOME!!
AWESOME!
Thats smart. Nice!
wow thats awsome
WOW... he scored and nailed it...
awesome video XD
out standing
it's electrically actuated, so it's faster than a valve that you need to operate by hand. also if you make the wires long enough, you can launch from as far as you want.
You went up to 75psi, but how do you determine what the max psi is for your pressure chamber before something cracks?
i am about to make it soon
That was cool.
awesoome
Is this planned?
I am watching this... yes, in the weekend!
Awsome!
nice one
cool!
this is cool
Good Idea, can be done esier. Does anyone know which gas can be better compressed than air (oxigen+nitrogien)?
great!
Hey, we just did this today in my 3rd year highschool engineering class (think of it as a classic shop class, but with CNC machines and lots of expensive software). We built it ourselves, and the original design was apparently from Make. Anyway, the teacher challenged us build our rockets in 10 minutes out of 1 piece of cardboard. some tape, and no designs/planning of any kind. If it's any testament to how easy this project is, mine won the challenge with a distance of 189 ft at only 40 PSI.
hours of endless fun!!!
How much pressure can that sprinkler valve take? If I'd change the PVC to SCH120 and put 300 PSI could the valve handle it plus larger pressure chamber? Rocket made out of PVC of course.
Rockets are cool. Glass marbles and steel ball bearings work too...
that look pretty darn cool. I'm thinking you could use a plastic nose cone. However, the start up cost doesn't exactly look cheap.
Damn that went high
im gonna do it
i should make this too some day :3 now its winter, so mayby i just spent my spare time to buy parts :3
cool !! :D i'll try it
cool what if u have higher psi will it b to much for the rocket to handle
thats a sharp rocket.
its gonna go through someones head
pump it to the MAX!
We use one of these in my boy scout troop we have had lots of fun with it
I made a rocket but with water, flies cooler, and looks better in slow mo :) great vid
@TheAlpeXi Yeah, i would imagine it could, I mean, you could use a wider pipe, or just a longer one, and it would work no problem, but you might need a different pressure
I have built one of these myself, and used a diesel can for a pressure chamber and a ball valve.
Thank you kip kay, you teatched us how to make a FUCKIING KILLER LAUNCHER!
Sir: do you know your rocket's weight, the compressed-air's thrust-force, and it Thrust-Weight-Ratio (TWR)? thanks. K.S.
can you increase the psi for a longer shoot, or will that damage the rocket on launch??
I made something similar to this, but instead I use a bottle rocket filled just under half way with water! It works great!
coool i love it....................
