Project Update! -- Since the Compressed Air Rocket project was published in Make: magazine, it's been hugely popular. We have now released the next version of the Compressed Air Rocket v2.0 kit and a first-of-its-kind Air Rocket Glider. Find out about these projects and join the air rocket community at: www.AirRocketWorks.com. -Rick Schertle (Compressed Air Rocket designer) & Keith Violette (Air Rocket Glider designer)
Blow your friends away as you send this 25-cent rocket hundreds of feet in the air. Get the PDF for this project: makezine.com/2010/04/14/weeken... The rocket template is here: cdn.makezine.com/make/15/Rocke... More great projects at www.makezine.com

Made one this weekend. Took a little longer than expected to make the launcher and a couple rockets.
But, wow. These flew higher than our normal rockets. The kids loved it.
I was able to buy everything as described except I couldn't get the same size brass fittings. Instead the size between the brass fittings had to be larger to find a combination that kept the same size hose barb and PVC pipe size.
    Fun!

This is pretty cool. Lately my son and I have been making compressed air cannons. We've shot them through televisions, toilets, vases, etc. We have also fired a nerf dart over 75 yards. Have vids on my page showing them.

This is a brilliant idea, incorporate a burst disk after the sprinkler valve ( simple as masking tape in a coupler near the end) this would give the rocket much more "power" if the chamber to barrel ratio is more than 3:1 because the air pressure is spread through the valve chamber and barrel.

You can also drill a hole in one PVC end cap and install that tire valve stem right into it. That will remove a lot of the reducers, fittings and the hose, a lot less clunky.

well it worked the first few times as you can see in my vids but it eventually died on me. i was really hoping to use an electric trigger. i wound up using an air gun and then scrapped the whole project and used a mechanical lever. was more reliable.
but thanks KipKay for the vids. You i inspire me to no end. :)

it's electrically actuated, so it's faster than a valve that you need to operate by hand. also if you make the wires long enough, you can launch from as far as you want.

Hey, we just did this today in my 3rd year highschool engineering class (think of it as a classic shop class, but with CNC machines and lots of expensive software). We built it ourselves, and the original design was apparently from Make. Anyway, the teacher challenged us build our rockets in 10 minutes out of 1 piece of cardboard. some tape, and no designs/planning of any kind. If it's any testament to how easy this project is, mine won the challenge with a distance of 189 ft at only 40 PSI.

How much pressure can that sprinkler valve take? If I'd change the PVC to SCH120 and put 300 PSI could the valve handle it plus larger pressure chamber? Rocket made out of PVC of course.
