What people don’t understand about the “rice water” trend is that the reason why the Miao women do it is because they DONT have shampoo or access to shampoo products like us here in the USA or any other country that has money. My mom is from Laos and she said they would use rice water because they didn’t have money nor access to shampoo or did they know what shampoo is back when she was young. I have seen so many TH-cam talk ethics with rice water but they actually don’t know nor will listen to the truth behind it. thank you so much for this information I didn't know this even tho I watched a few videos about it. i haven't tried it myself yet but the reason the "rice water method" caught my interest was because it's natural and not formulated in a science lab so a shampoo promoting itself with having rice water as an ingredient seemed weird and uninteresting to me.

Its similar to the misleading hops extract claim. My mom is from Poland and apparently women used to use beer as a conditioning rinse when manufactured conditioners where not available. I don't think a tiny bit of extract blended in with conventional shampoo and conditioner formulas would do much or make sense when the chemistry behind using plain fermented rice water or beer is vastly different to using anything similar to a standard shampoo formula.

I wish there were more rules about what beauty companies are allowed to claim. The average costumer just can't make proper decisions in this jungle of pseudoscience. It's so hard to get reliable information on beauty, apart from "avoid the sun, sleep and drink water!".

    • @SarahIngleOfficial
      @SarahIngleOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +59

They legally are required to have good evidence to support all marketing claims, but they dance around “claims” by implying things. I also think laws need to be updated. It’s not really just cosmetics or drugs anymore. There’s this gray area with cosmeceuticals where there are cosmetic products that can also have medical benefits - but they can’t advertise any medical benefits because only drugs can. And even tho cosmetics are regulated, they’re not tested to the same degree as drugs, so what do we do with these “in-between” products? We really need separate testing requirements for these “gray-area” claims, but we can’t do that until they become their own separate category. Right now you can’t tell what’s legit because it all has to have weird, watered-down language because legally no cosmetic brand can advertise that their product has medical benefits (like hair growth) even if it legitimately does because that would make it a drug.

It’s a relatively small issue, but it bothered me so much that the FoB Target line is supposedly “customizable” but the fragrance is automatically included in the shampoos and conditioners instead of being “boosters”. @@lacunalshadow There’s some of both. I like to blend different sources together. There are some parts that probably look like generic stock footage that I actually did film myself. 😅 And I often change so much of the stock footage that it’s almost unrecognizable by the time I’m done with it. I just am very particular, and if I can’t film it myself for some reason or find a clip that fits what I want, I’ll spend an alarming amount of time manipulating footage (especially color and timing) to fit the image I have in my head.
If it’s ever anything that I didn’t make or buy the stock footage, it has the channel name on screen - for example, a few clips from Function of Beauty’s TH-cam. @@ericaallisonc It is research-based rather than clinical :) Clinical psych (what most people think when they hear "psychologist") provides mental health services to people, whereas experimental psych focuses on scientific research to further evidence based practices and psych knowledge. Something I wish I had known about hair care and skin care so long ago was that it doesn't matter how high end or good the product is, you have to know your hair/skin type and also know if you happen to have any dermatological conditions that effect them. I finally went to the dermatologist at age 27 and was diagnosed with several different scalp and skin conditions which helped me narrow down what chemicals and products are actually going to control my dermatitis and help my skin and hair feel healthy. If there was one magical product that worked for everyone we'd all be using it already lol

Also something to consider about reviews, especially on product pages: People only review standouts. If your shampoo performs as an average shampoo that doesn't do anything special, but also doesn't make your hair fall out, you're not going to go out of your way to review it. People only report the abnormal. If it's the first time someone is actually using products suited for them (eg the right hair products for your hair type) they might see fast differences, which they will report. It's why you frequently see that a product has a very much all or nothing score, a lot of people give it either 1 star or 5 stars, because they have had an exceptional experience with it, whether that be good or bad

As a chemist I was super impressed by the amount of effort you put into explaining the science. A lot of people get scared about reading research studies and it's a way where companies (or even other people for that matter) make claims based off the title or abstract. Research literacy is such an important skill and will help people make more informed decisions, especially when we're all blinded by pretty marketing-- including myself! I love a pretty product but I always need to look into the science since some chemicals in certain combinations or concentrations really mess with my skin and hair. I highly recommend anyone who has sensitive skin/hair or who are seeing things go downhill to really look into what's in their products. Simple changes can make a world of a difference :)

The algorithm has done everything right, I've just discovered you today!😍 As a biology student and lab technician I love to see how people from different fields do a deep dive into papers and fundamental knowledge of chemistry/biology. Nevertheless I'm the perfect victim of marketing... I mean garnier hair care line smells like fruit, they're cheap and colourful 😂

My sister bought me a Function of Beauty set for my birthday years ago. It literally burned my head and made my hair feel like straw. I have thin, fine hair that is easily damaged. I use Redken products now, and though they're a bit pricey than the usual brands they work great!

Yes! As someone who took research method classes for their degree, SIGNIFICANCE =/= a big change!! So glad you mentioned that 💕 it’s a common mistake even by newer research students, it takes a lot of knowledge and practice to fully interpret research studies, I LOVE this so much!

PS: I have a PhD in research methods, and I think your descriptions of how to evaluate studies, statistical significance, and correlation vs. causation were excellent. :)

If only you’d seen it before I cut it down into a length more appropriate for TH-cam 😆 The full original source list didn’t fit in the TH-cam description. My extra gene really got the best of me.
And yessssss! You never know when those skills will come in handy.

Loved this video. It shows a great amount of attention to detail and research. Earned yourself a subscriber.
Your video was too late for me though already bought the conditioner (already knew the shampoo likely wouldn’t do anything based on their claims- you can’t do anything with shampoo that has anything to do with styling (calling out the volume and straightening boosters for the shampoo)- duh it washes out)
I will say your video was a bit harsh just because ingredients aren’t 100% properly proven to work, does not necessarily mean they can’t. There are so many ingredients out there and products with so many combinations of them, it’s sort of a trial and error industry of finding what works best for you. But I find many many cosmetologist fall to this flimsy study says this con, so good on you for calling them out!
Also thank you for calling out the ph balance. So glad I didn’t get the shampoo! I tried the online version of function of beauty and its honestly been the best conditioner I have tried yet (the shampoo was lacking). Now it was too expensive for me to say the long term effects were great unfortunately. I just used it when I really wanted my hair to look nice. So I figured I’d try to target version. To be fair my other option that I use is Garnier Fructis grow strong, and I’m guessing it’s not the best (but boy does it do wonders for detangling and that just is top priority for ngl). Been trying to find better so I’m in that trial and error phase but also trying not to break the bank

The clip where you say it may be fun to experiment with it without running the risk of doing damage to your hair with the clip of the person pulling their hair out in chunks is exactly what FoB did to my hair 💀 I heard so many people praise the company so I gave it a shot and it absolutely ruined my hair. It came out in major chunks and was so horribly stringy. It took years for my hair to recover and it's still not all the way back to how it was before. I thought I was alone in the struggle too until I discovered there are THOUSANDS of others who went through the exact same thing. It's not worth it. 😬

FoB destroyed my hair!! It took a long time to get it back to what it use to be! I shedded lots of hair! My hair was definitely stringy and frizzy!

Been trying to find a function of beauty review that really gets down to the science and finally found it!! As a biochemistry graduate, I can second everything you said about the caveats in reading primary literature. I did notice that when you measured the pH of the shampoo you seemed to have diluted it first, but the dilution process will actually cause the pH to increase (pH is a measurement of the concentration of H+ ions in the solution, the lower the pH the higher the H+ concentration). What I'm curious to see is if the pH will fall within the ideal range if you take the dilution factor into account (unless there's a standardized way to dilute shampoo and everything is reported on the diluted scale?).

Love how you listed some of the important points to look out for in a study in such a concise way! My course mates and I can rage forever about the amount of bad studies which you often only realise are bad when you need to understand them really well for your own research!

I'm so glad I came across your account, I love the content its both informative and highly needed! Ive tried to pay more attention to marketing hacks after getting combarded by Vegamour ads. They are by far the sketchiest hair care company I've come across! They've ended live streams when questions on ingredients are asked, limited comments on social media posts/won't allow them at all (how do you have other 6,000 likes on a Facebook post and no comments?) and post inaccurate before and after photos by using different angles. Thank you for bringing attention to these kinds of things!

The one thing I do like about personalized hair care is that I can get shampoo for my fine hair but also deeply conditions it since my hair is dry and wavy. I also love how I can choose fragrance and dye free. I haven’t been able to find all these things together in a shampoo and conditioner yet. Mine isn’t from Target though because I’m not American.

This! Love that you're keeping people informed. It's easier now more than ever for brands to reach young and impressional groups on social media with these partnerships. People want to trust their favorite Influencers, but they should also be aware of the fact that it is a marketing tactic and that there are biases that come along with that. Great topic and great editing! I can tell you are working hard and it shows in the quality in each video you make. Each one gets better and better! ♡♡♡
