My worst to best: 7. (By a wide margin) 5. (Not a bad season per se, just too safe and lighthearted) 6. (Flawed like other later seasons. Just less flawed than the rest. Also, Hank should've stuck with Faith and the show should've ended there. The true meaning of Grace and moving on.) 3. (A really good season overall.) 4. (An excellent season.) 1. (Just an amazing setup for a series and would've worked very well as a standalone too.) 2. (Lew-fucking-Ashby.)
The truth is Californication should have ended on season 4, with Hank moving back to N.Y pursuing his own happiness instead of insisting in a never ending road.
The season finale of season 4 really feels like it was kinda planned as the last one. We get the Rolling Stones tune from the pilote episode again. Felt like a good ending
My ranking: S2, S1, S3, S4, S6, S7, S5. Seasons 1 & 2 are neck and neck for me, as are Seasons 3 & 4, those are all creatively near perfect. Hard to rank. Then it drops off a bit here and there for Seasons 6 & 7 ( but still damn good). Season 5 is still full of substance, but it sometimes felt like “let’s shake things up, but never really go anywhere until the final episode.” I think they just went way out in left field, and left a few things hanging. But maybe that mirrors life in some ways. I really love the whole series as a whole. Some of the best writing I’ve ever seen.
I have to defend season 5 a little: I didn't like it at first watching but then it grew with me. I like to character progression. In season 5 finally Hank is the sane one that really tries not to mess anything up. It is a great character growth where. I would put it higher. It's not that funny, but it is very good story of Hank's life. Oh, and Hank-Bates bromance is awesome.
Been loving these videos. I agree that Season 1 could have been completely self-contained. However I think they should have ended the show after Season 4. Once the Mia storyline was resolved, they should have ended things. And I think that would have been more fitting. Hank driving off into the sunset. He doesn't get Karen back but everyone seems to be in a good place. That last scene of Hank on set feels like the show was saying goodbye. I personally look at Seasons 5, 6, and 7 as a bonus. But aside from a few moments, I really don't go back to those so much as I do Seasons 1-4. By the way, have you read the actual book God Hates Us All that Showtime released to promote Season 3?
Totally agree. The 4th season sould have been the end. When Hank drives into the sunset they played the same Rolling's song from the Pilot's opening scene. It was the perfect moment to wrap things up in terms of composition. But...money
@@ISAAKKUSH Right, because fuck Charlie AND his bald head... Hank's story was far from over at the end of 4. One could argue they could have gone a different way to get things back on track for all the major characters from season 5 onwards, but none of them had had the ending they deserved at that point. It was never about the money.
I’d love a video counting down Hank Moody’s best writing jobs. I think the rock opera with Atticus fetch was my favorite with “God Hates Us All” film adaptation a second, and Fucking and Punching third.
Excellent rating! I like the point that someone made here that it should have ended with season 4 and the rest is bonus material. Season 7 felt like watching a train crash in slow motion.
It would have added so much more complexity to the show if they would have just acknowledged mid series that the hank Karen relationship was over. This story is about hank and pining over a woman is ok but it felt like it was completely overdone
For me best to...not best 4, 6, (2, 3) 1, 5, 7 Seasons 2 and 3 are interchangeable. I think I found Season 3 funnier, but the Lou Ashbey character in Season 2 was one of my favourite supporting characters. I think season 6 was the one that made me laugh the most (although, they're all hilarious). Season 4, the writing it just seemed so good. Also the Chateau Marmont scenes with Hank, Charlie and Eddie Nero were pretty epic.
Great analysis, you touched upon the key elements of every season. I also concur that Season 5 is the worst, because it adversely changed the direction of the show. My ranking from best to worst: 1,2,6,3,4,7,5.
I actually really enjoy watching season 5. I look forward to it when I rewatch. While the previous seasons were great, this was a fresh start for the series by starting it a few years after the last season. Yeah it's a little jumbled, but still a great season in my opinion.
Few days back I done Californication and I must say is a pretty damn show except for some seasons Season 7 - (This season could be better if there won't be one character and that is Levon he was so annoying frustrating and that doesn't feel like he is Hank son he was more like Charlie 5/10) Season 5 - (Is pretty Ok season was kinda weird Hank goes into rap crap but duo Hank and Batesy was fun to watch 6/10) Season 6 - (Pretty step up from Season 5 but not much still there was some parts that doesn't really work for me but overall it was good 7/10) Season 3 - (From this point all of the seasons I think are dam good and mainly Season 3 also this season have best final episode 8/10) Season 2 - (Friendship between Hank and Ashby great season 8/10) Season 1 - (Definitely the greatest season not only for Californication 9/10) Season 4 - (This is season is kinda underrated and is a shame because I think this season have the best drama side and it was like ending of one chapter 9/10)
Love your channel man. Of course i would love to see a video of you spinning some options on how, when o with whom *coughs Faith *coughs Hank should have ended up with. Cheers!
JUST FINISHED.. this series..oh my...your picks in that order are spot on with me as well, my own would be as they are in order, so as to see the evolving of Hank, and where will him and Karen end up and the way they did do it, sums up this series perfectly, my problem is with Karen..she keeps him at arms length the whole time, knowing about his flirtatious ways, and knows if she takes him back he'll keep wandering, even though, HANK, keeps at it, and knows if Karen is mad at me right now, or just keeps being mad, i can go find some one who will give me attention even though a lot of make up sex happens, as stated 'WASH, RINSE, REPEAT"happens to,, Becca was Hanks security blanket, and feared her ever leaving, thwarting her every attempt, until.. he could not it seems and i hated that they wrote her out the "Runkles" were an example of actual people who live in California, "Narrcisistic" assholes, Hank was everything described here...but we loved him for it and there would be no show if they tied him down.
I did enjoy your reviews, interesting and thoughtful. I like them 2, 1, 3, 4. After 5, 7, 6 but those last three are all a step down. Clearly we have different tastes but Faith/S6 was less interesting to me with every episode. Finally, show should have ended S7 by having Hank reunite with Trixie in Vegas--or just skip all stuff from Seasons 5/6/7 and have S5 be about Hank and Trixie.
@NEP84 I think in season 7, Hank should have ended up with Julia. Karen clearly wasn't going to take him back, and they could have had something there, if he would have let it. I was really hoping that he would have showed up on the date with her. I was disappointed when he set someone else up with her. I didn't like the fact that they made Levon so clingy. It seems he should have been more independent. I also liked Faith with Hank. She seemed to ground him, and made him happy. I think the others were just flings that weren't meant to be long term relationships. He should have stopped pursuing Karen when she told him she wouldn't marry him. I think she was the reason he was screwing up his life and drinking so much. He wasn't truly happy with her, even though he thought she was the one that made him happy.
Seasons 1, 2, 3 and 6 are all interchangeable in my Californication hierarchy. All those seasons are brilliant, and season 4 is no slouch either, but season 7 is the black sheep on my list and I would've been ok if they'd ended it after the season 6 finale.
season six would of been a lot better if they would of explored hanks "adverse effects of his endless philandering" a bit further rather than a quick bout of rehab in the first episode. great video and channel btw
Mine would be 2, 6, 3, 4, 1, 7, 5. 2, 6 and 3 are the standouts for me. 2 from hilarious to gut-wrenching, I like the emotional roller coaster, 6 the same, faith and atticus were awesome characters, 3 was just hilarious throughout. I'm not the biggest fan of Batesy, but I actually liked Levon tbh. Charlie had become more or less a caricature at that point, and Levon was endearing.
Ive watched californication multiple times and its my fav series ever for sure, i have to disagree with you, that hank should have let go of karen, they were always meant to be
The ending of s4 with Rolling Stone's You can't always get what you want is so emotional and perfect it made me cry... S4 really was the best, the whole legal plus movie set plus issues resolving everything, also feels like they did want to end the thing there, s5 was okayish, s6 was actually pretty damn good, the whole Faith angle, another near perfect ending, should have stayed with maggie grace!!
I haven't rewatched this series in a long ass time, but it was one of my favorites. I think Season 1 was definitely the best, but I always remember Season 6 being my favorite and I really wished that the series ended with Hank running away with Faith, so much so that I justed the last season because they threw that away.
I disagree.......the show was about Hank and Karen.......Showing Becka's wedding would have changed that focus. The point is, Hank has zero intention of giving up, Karen doesn't want him to give up.......Becca is a grown up. She wants her parents to be happy, but she has her own life now. Seeing her wedding would have been like opening the door to a sequel no one wants to see.
From worst to best: 7/ 5/ 1/ 6/ 4/ 2/ 3 I like season 1, but I love the chaotic settings from the 2nd to 4th seasons. I've always thought about season 1 as being the most "normal" in regards to family relantionships. After that it becomes really messy (starting with the legend Lew Ashby, escalating to the events of the 4th season), which in my opinion makes sense considering the type of person Hank was, and those storylines brought some of the best growth moments to his character. Besides that, the romantic relationships, as you said, had the most chemistry, especially in the 4th season. Great video as always! Keep it up. I would like to see your view on the runkles and their dinamic throughout the series.
Not that anybody asked but hear me out 7- season seven was dead last. 6-season five 5-season four 4-season three 3-season one 2-season two 1-season six
It is blasphemy to have season 6 that high, especially over season 2. Don't get me wrong, season 6 is fine, but definitely not over the writing, characters and acting that happened in season 2, 3 and 4. Fuck it Im gonna make my own ranking video explaining how wrong you are sir. Subscribed and reported, keep up the good work.
My Favorite seasons from best to worst: 2, 5, 3, 1, 7, 6, 4 Season 4 was by far the most poorly written. The unforgivable qualities Hank had that just had to be brushed off, such as him lying to Karen about killing himself, that was just fucked up
I'm shocked that you ranked Season 6 as the second best. I must say, rewatching it made me love it a bit more, but I wouldn't say ia good enough to get Silver medal.
Aghast that you threw shade at Stu... but then you came up big with the Lost and DBZ drops :-) Worst to best: 7,8,6,5,2,1,3,4 Season 7 comes in last for me too. I actually thought RZA was good but they roped him into the clunkiest joke in the entire series "how's the food?" Ugh.
Wow I very much disagree. Season 5 was a drop-off from the first 4 seasons but it's not the worst season of the series, and I didn't see season 6 as a rebound by any stretch. It was a major decline even from season 5. My countdown from worst to best seasons were: 7) Season 7 6) Season 6 5) Season 5 4) Season 3 3) Season 4 2) Season 2 1) Season 1 (My favorite season of any series of all-time)
Season 7 is by far the worst, but let’s not forget that in Season 5, a man shoots another man in broad daylight surrounded by a ton of people, and nothing happens to him. In fact, everyone just laughs it off.
My worst to best:

Agreed
I’d agree with that
The truth is Californication should have ended on season 4, with Hank moving back to N.Y pursuing his own happiness instead of insisting in a never ending road.
Not mad at this tbh.
The season finale of season 4 really feels like it was kinda planned as the last one. We get the Rolling Stones tune from the pilote episode again. Felt like a good ending
@@caspuchiha yeah season 5 was kinda unplanned.
Agreed. If it must continue, season six should've been the final one by the absolute latest.
Seasons 1-4 were great season 6 was ok 7 would’ve been alright if he didn’t went back to LA. We will not speak about 8
That scene where Runkle gets head from the transsexual is easily one of the funniest tv moments ever
My favorite series of all time. By far the best series to watch during a break up.
My ranking: S2, S1, S3, S4, S6, S7, S5. Seasons 1 & 2 are neck and neck for me, as are Seasons 3 & 4, those are all creatively near perfect. Hard to rank. It's a toss up. I can easily see Season 2 coming in as most peeps favorite if not 2nd favorite season. It's masterful.

real cool anaylsis. Can't say I fully agree but it's a TV show
my rankings: 1,2,4,3,6,7,5
Hank Moody is my hero, but the sixth season was so good that the seventh could no longer be watched.
Season 1 and 2 are both S-tier TV gold, but with the benefit of hindsight, season 6 is definitely growing on me.
They picked karens name so good.

season 3 was my favourite and the last season was that bad i only watched 1.5 episodes of it
Understandable
Any season ! Perfect !

Shit list
one of the best shows ever
Love seasons 1-4. 5 slips a bit, but 6 is much better. The only season I really don't like is 7. Levon is absolutely awful.
Love your analysis, best series ever
Thank you for checking it out!
I'm shocked that you ranked Season 6 as the second best. I must say, rewatching it made me love it a bit more, but I wouldn't say ia good enough to get Silver medal.

I loved him when he first joined the cast but his whole arc in Season 6-7 really made me despise him after awhile.
Yeah season 5... hated Tyler.. I still respect the actor for making me hate that little bugger! Hey, when's the next video my dude?
Daisy is 49 now.. or at least the actress is. Damn. 😅
Season 3 my favourite as the funniest of all.
Did they run out of money in season 7? It is so low budget.
Season 2 is number #1
My ranking from best to worst:
1,2,4,3,6,7,5
Wow I very much disagree. Season 5 was a drop-off from the first 4 seasons but it's not the worst season of the series, and I didn't see season 6 as a rebound by any stretch. It was a major decline even from season 5.
My countdown from worst to best seasons were:
7) Season 7
6) Season 6
5) Season 5
4) Season 3
3) Season 4
2) Season 2

love it

we neeeeeeeeeeeeeed all movieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
This show goated
I think Levon is hilarious. Samurai Apocalypse on the other hand is not and I think S5 and S3 is the worst and S6 or S2 is probably my favorites.
W show
❤❤❤
Best is S2 with Ashby… worst is S7 Levon… holy cow that kid was annoying, I just can’t rewatch that season.
Season 2 is the best one
Season7 was not the best but it would been better if Karen would have have died cause Karen holds everyone down
Bruh watching this video made me realize that I really hate this shoe like this stuff sucks and especially Karen and Mia
Only thing good about season 5 was that cute black chick
Yeah but it had no point
I stopped watching after Season 1... the rest of them all felt forced
Sorry but anything other than season 5, 6 and 7 being bottom three is plain wrong. Good video tho

Season 2 is hands down the best. Your list is ok, but a little off. Season 7 is by far the worst.
Season 6 is so poor in my opinion. Two words. Tim Minchin. Annoyed the hell out of me!!!!! Agree?!
