When Frank Herbert wrote "Dune" he was an ardent Ecologist, keenly interested in Human Evolution and all things of the Natural world. He didnt want a Tech centrist scifi theme where "Things" were the advancement. He wanted "People" to be the Advanced thing. Look on it from that perspective and Dune makes a ton of sense. The reasoning for this goes back to a story event called the Butlerian Jihad.

I really enjoyed the Butlerian Jihad and the follow up novels of the trilogy. It was interesting to see how Herbert's son saw everything starting with the great houses, the machines and like.

Almost everything Brian Herbert put out was drafts of his father’s work. That’s why he partnered with Kevin Anderson to flesh out the rough draft. If you ever read Dreamer of Dune you realize he basically wrote dossier for the characters with backstories psychology motivations. That’s why from the first pages the characters feel like real people.
All Brian Herbert did with Kevin Anderson was turn all the volumes of work into companion books to complete Frank Herbert universe.
Kevin Anderson is the guy who early on work for LucasArts building the Lucas’s Expanded Universe to Star Wars and DC also used him to some books including a definitive story about Krypton leading to the birth of Superman

To be clear the books Brian Herbert wrote are 100% his books but they’re the fleshed out rough backstories Frank Herbert to build the world of Dune.
I years ago read everything Dune because Brian Herbert announced they completed everything that Frank Herbert left behind. Completing the final book is where the idea to finish the saga beginning to end came from. Frank Herbert was beginning work on Hunters of Dune when he died with a final conclusion book after.

The blue eyes are a result of the spice. Zendaya's people are called the Fremen, which are a sort of freedom fighters and the original inhabitants of planet Arrakis (where spice comes from). The have blue eyes because of consumption of the spice.
Spice (spice melange in full) can be considered a drug but it's actually extremely rare and valuable. Consuming it is a sign of great wealth in the Dune universe. Besides the blue eyes, it increases your lifespan and also sometimes gives you the power of prescience.
The "halo's" you see around some people are a sort of personal energy shield used in combat.

The spice is extremly important to a) the bene gesserit - an matriachal secretice order who plan to bring the Kwisatz Haderach - the male offspring of their breeding program for generations. he is like a superhuman being. they carefully manipulate relationships and "collect" key genes to achieve their goal. and we have b) the navigators. these... let's call them "guys" are able to fold space and maintain space travel. they are mutated from the consumation of spice and can only survive in a container "floating" in spice melange gas

Dune is still one of my absolute favorite stories ever. The original 6 books are fantastic, and the prequels and sequels written by the original author's son with another guy are interesting as well. This is actually the third time the first book has been adapted to film. Now, if only they continue and make the rest after this, I'll be super happy! To answer a question you asked, the super blue in blue eyes are not natural, they are a sign of addiction to melange, aka spice, which is only found on Arrakis, aka Dune. What's funny is what melange actually is. People in universe understand that spice is connected to the giant sandworms of Dune, but what they don't seem to get, and one does need to read between the lines a bit to understand, is that it's actually sandworm shit. I love it! The auras are actually shields. They block anything going above a certain speed. The only way to penetrate them is to strike slowly. Fast on defense, slow on the attack, that's the energy shield mentality. Also, a laser based weapon hitting a shield causes an explosion with the same destructive power of a nuke. That is one reason why swords and what not are still heavily used in this future. Can't wait to see this, and for you guys to see it. The spice must flow!

Oh, it's interesting about the shields. I assumed that they work like this. Probably the developers of Mass Effect were inspired by this detail to create kinetic shields in their game. I really love this game, so maybe that's why I guessed how the shields work in this trailer :D

  • @Tazkar

The Flicker of Blue when they are fighting are their knives impacting their personal shields. They knife fight because the shields are basically invincible to fast moving objects aka bullets(With some exceptions..don't fire a Lasgun at a Shield..it gets messy). But they don't fully stop objects that move slow enough. Hence one of Gurney's quotes from the books and original movie "The Slow Blade Penetrates the Shield."

the blue/red auras (as if this wasn't already explained 9000 times so I apologize) are called 'Holtzmann Shields' ..they are shields that repel fast-moving objects like bullets - rendering guns ostensibly useless in this universe - but allows slow things to pass, like oxygen, but also knives. Hi, I reád the books written by Frank Herbert - the first one when I was 14 years old. I was amazed by the story and everything in it. Then I saw the first movie adaptation on VHS in its time but I didn't like that at all. Then in around 2000 a new adataption came out as a mini series (3x1.5 hours) with the same title: Dune. Two years later I could watch the next mini series as The children of dune which contained the second book (Messiah of dune) as well. For me these two mini series could give back most better the details of the novels so far, so I like them very much. I can just offer to watch these for everyone but don't expect too much about the visualisation - this aspect isn't the most important at a story like the Dune.
I am exited about this new movie but a little bit afraid as well: Will it long enough to give back the whole story (the Dune was a double book in my country), can it reach the details that the series could, etc?

@Definitely Not Definitive The saturation of the blood with the spice melange is what causes the eyes to turn blue. The spice (the substance that the Universe relies on for space travel and a plethora of other things) is ubiquitous on Arrakis. It's present in small quantites in the air, the local food, etc, but it's stronger in the desert regions (there's a spoilerly reason for this that I won't go into). It's also a drug. An incredibly addictive drug, one that expands consciousness. If you stop being exposed to it, the withdrawal symptoms eventually lead to insanity and death.

They get super organised, find out a LOT more about how Spice is made, become friends with GIANT sand worms, kill a whole lot of people and decide that corporate management needs overhauling. That, but two three-hour movies, because it's very big and very cool. The Godfather meets Game Of Thrones in Space, with a Star Wars budget. Oh, and Paul may be the Messiah. (What's In The Box? The original Dune is still my favorite sci fi ever. I still love the intro that plays out in the beginning of the movie:
    Princess Irulan
" The beginning is a very delicate time. Know then, that it is the year Ten Thousand One Ninety One. The Known Universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, my father. In this time the most precious substance in the Universe is the spice melange. The spice extends life, the spice expands consciousness, the spice is vital to space travel. The Spacing Guild and its Navigators, who the spice has mutated over four thousand years, use the orange spice gas which gives them the ability to fold space - that is, travel to any part of the universe without moving. Oh yes, I forgot to tell you, the spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe, a desolate, dry planet with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Fremen, who have long held a prophecy, that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom. The planet is Arrakis, also known as Dune. "

The blue eyes occur when maximum Spiece saturation has been reached. However, it comes with a cost: even a minor use and addiction to the Spice can lead to death IF withdrawal is attempted. in short: once its taken it must be taken forever.

I'm not sure if anybody else mentioned it but, Spice is also fundamental to space travel so Spice production being disrupted would lead (once stockpiles ran out) to the death of a good proportion of the higher ranks of society throughout the Imperium (due to addiction). Without Spice the Navigator Guild cannot safely fold space to instantly travel to different star systems, as well as the Guild dying out due to Spice withdrawal since they have the greatest need for Spice. No Guild, no faster then light travel and no Imperium. Bene Gesserit Sisterhood is also dependent on the Spice so a lot of political power rests in the hands of the house that is mining the Spice and its the lure than is used to draw in the Atredies.

One of the major themes of Dune is being wary of charismatic leaders, about the dangers of a hero. Dune is about the flaws in humanity that we may never overcome. I am so hyped for this movie because everything seems to be getting done right for once. THIS is the properly handled adaptation that so far looks like the one all of us major Dune fans have been waiting for.
The biggest hurdle is that the studio seems to be going out of its way to undercut the movie in every way it can from it's campaign of manually copy striking reviewers who are praising it to proclaiming hesitancy at even green-lighting the 2nd half. I swear it's like they actually want it to fail despite how much positive hype it's generating and how many major named actors have been running to them to get parts in it.

We will say that we appealed the copyright claim and Warner Brothers released it. And we aren’t a big channel by any means. They are one of the better studios that works with reactors from our experience. That’s just our experience though.
It is weird they didn’t shoot both films back to back. Seems like it would mean more to show faith in the movie by already having the sequel lined up 🤔🤗

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames The crazy thing is, there's no real reason for the claims in the first place, not just on your video. The responses, reactions and reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and the vast majority of the claims are being done manually as opposed to the usual YT shenanigans of automated striking. So someone at WB is literally going out of their way to punish people for actually looking forward to the movie and basically positively promoting it.

The blue eyes is because of the Spice... Arrakis or Dune is the only planet where you find spice, which is needed to enhanced humans for interstellar travel among other things. It is a comodity similar to Oil is today for us. The one who controls spice (or oil) controls everything in the Universe. It is all over, in the air the water etc... of Arrakis (or Dune) and thus it's native people inhale it and eat so much of it that they get those blue eyes (and spoiler alert: enhance the mind). The spice is produced by the sandworms btw.

At this point we get to the Syfy Channel's attempt at Frank Herbert's Dune (2000), and then Frank Herbert's Children of Dune (2003). Blue within blue eyes :D That is quite simple and is not a spoiler. Arrakis has spice in the air, in the vegetables, water, and in animals. People who stay too long in Arrakis integrates spice into its system and become addicted even if not consuming directly because of everything in the environment. It expands consciousness, but the blue within blues eyes is a mark you are addicted to and will depend on for the rest of your life. The backside is that withdrawal will kill you. It is not unique to the fremen because people outside Arrakis who consume it regularly end up addicted and have Eyes of Ibad.

  • @SonofPerson

Blue eyes are the physical indicator of the addiction to the spice, Melange. The original books describe it as “blue within blue”. The spice comes, and only comes, from the all-desert planet known as Arrakis, or Dune.
Melange is what allows humans to travel through space, it is used in religious orders for various rituals, and grants users long life, but it is highly addictive. Once taken, the user can never stop taking Melange. As Chani hints at in the trailer, Dune’s atmosphere is permeated with spice.
Star Wars was inspired by Dune. The other movies never did the story justice. But if this version does (and seeing the cast and how this director did Sicario, Arrival, and most importantly, Bladerunner 2049, I have the utmost faith that it will), this story might take its rightful place as number one space operas/sci-fi of all time.

It wouldn't be so bad, if you read the book after seeing the movie. I do not know for sure, of course, but feel fairly confident in thinking, there will be plenty of book parts remaining which will not appear in a 2 1/2 hour movie.
In 1984, director David Lynch, had over 5 hours of film, wanting to split it into two movies, and he still felt there was more story to tell.
I hope the movie does some justice to the story, but it is a deep tale, with thoroughly well conceived worlds and characters, with themes of ecology, economics, politics, racial justice, and more.

This is only Part 1. It's being developed as two movies. The downside is that from everything I've read and listened to it seems like the making of the second part will be contingent on the success of the first, which is shit. I'm guessing this first movie is going to end when Paul eventually becomes Muad'Dib. This would leave the Fremen/Harkonnen war, Paul becoming the Kwisatz Haderach, Alia's birth and development as a major story character and the eventual conflict with the Emperor as the main story points for the second movie.

But from what we understand Lynch’s 84 version deviated from the book quite a bit. So not sure this is a true remake. Either way the director is definitely very good and should hopefully pull it off 😎🤟

I think you'll find Paul is not what you think. And you'll soon discover that his journey, his "hero's journey", is not at all what it entails. The blue in blue eyes of Ibad give sight to all that possess them, and give all-seeing sight in some. But this doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing. Sometimes ignorance or indeed blindness is bliss. Oh Paul you poor boy...

Please take my advice. Do NOT go see this movie. Star Wars was a "kids" version of "Dune". As for the "Power Rangers"...........Not even in the same Universe. "Dune" will "hurt" your brain. Again for your own sake, Take A Pass on "Dune". Play a video game. Or watch one of those "Comic Book" movies, instead. You will thank me later.
