    As a framer: I got into laying block, welding, installing shingles and metal roofing, siding, finish carpentry and tiling. Cons are relatives and in-laws wanting you to build them things and not paying for anything. I got an associates degree in applied sciences for welding- the rest I learned on the job but being a framer I can see what will work when drawing out plans beyond the wall and I use that for metal fabrication as well. Cons is it is an expensive adventure every time- I lost a wife because I'm always busy but remarried. Only the strong survive.

    One thing I don’t like is working outside in the summer here. Even the winter with freezing temperatures and rain aren’t as bad as how hot it gets. I can handle it good enough, but it costs a lot of energy... and my colleagues always complain too much about the weather, lol.

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed! You get good at "interviewing" and reading clients at the first meet. I have no hesitation doing a fast over-quote on jobs for this reason. My rule of thumb is "I never quote to win a job, I quote to not lose money."

    • @livelikekings8968
      @livelikekings8968 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Clients think quoting is a 2min job on a new build maybe yes, a renovation however there are endless hidden scenarios and although we builders can perform miracles with super human efforts we are mere mortals without XRay vision or the ability to time travel back in time to work out why or how something was built.
      Quality workmanship takes time and that starts at the quote.

    I know it's sadistic, but as and ex tradey = I do get a solid laugh when you're out and about running errands and the look of sheer terror that washes over your face everytime you get back to your van and the alarm is going off. Then the relief when there is nothing wrong. Ah, the memories.
    In Aus its become far more common to build a fully custome trailer so you can store everything you have in one spot. Also means you can take your business anywhere but also detach it and leave it behind safely locked away when you do normal life stuff.

    What I don't like about the trades in general:
    > productivity being the only goal in some manager's eyes, and how dare you have a breather or have a yarn. gotta yell at the apprentice too, because apparently they should be working a trade quality, at trade speed, with apprentice wages. But not taking shortcuts
    > time is money mentality. Not only in the productivity mentioned above, but also when project managers try to hurry everybody along and get 5 trades to complete 2 weeks work in 4 days. Trying to work in an area full of other trades materials because they had to bring it on site too early to comply
    > architects seemingly having no practical experience and making nonsensical plans. Also plans that change but nobody tells you
    > health and safety policies that make no sense. Apparently its better for me to arch my back in a bad position because god forbid I take off my hard hat (even if I accept any risks that come with it). Of course, it might not have been needed had you scheduled more time when areas were more open and less cluttered, but what did I say above? Time is money, and H&S is more lip service to avoid fines than about any logical sense. Which is why the project manager thinks its acceptable to walk around without it taking photos of people without theirs.
    The last point was especially prominent during levels 2 and 3 of covid. Constantly wash hands, but gloves at all times? Can't be within 1 metre, but please complete this 2 man job in a small scissor lift, we don't want to extend the project.

    Been a bench and site joiner for 20 plus years. That list is spot on. I'll add another hate to the list. Customers who think you can do a 5k job for 250£/€$.

    Cons:
    The amount of money and time invested.
    Im just a young third year apprentice but saving for a ute/van while all my other mates are saving for houses, holidays and racecars gets ya down a bit.
    But i must admit, im proud of my collection of tools, I basically have every tool you have except the hand tools and i treasure them more than anything.
    Labour only contracts.
    As mentioned, im an apprentice, but i can't find decent work which will benefit my apprenticeship unless im self employed and have better power over my contracts.
    so no holiday pay, sick pay, kiwisaver contributions and my acc just handed my arse to me with their levies. but claiming on all the tools iv been getting helps ;).
    No music!
    Its becoming a norm, iv noticed major contracting companies here in wellington dont allow music, and some of the smaller companies are the same!
    Pros:
    Sometimes i don't cry myself to sleep due to taxes and paperwork driving me mad.

      Raymond Nunns Wouldn't worry about what your mates have if they have to do something they don't enjoy for 40-50hrs a week to get it.

    My uncle is a trained carpenter. When I started my apprenticeship (as a joiner) he told me the same thing (5:18) and that he never regretted practising it.

    What I don't like: variety betwin finish carpentry and all builder skills in NZ. A cool thing I don't get bored in one place because we travel arround the city and allways in different job sites. And the practice of the tools.

    Make a vid talking about asbestos and your experience with it

    • @davidbrewer7937
      @davidbrewer7937 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Done the right & legal ways, Asbestos is expensive, time consuming & complicated... This is why many unscrupulous builders yank it on the QT & bury it in the waste skip. However, the transfer stations use x-ray to detect the stuff at the gates & there are huge fines if you get caught as well as real hazards trying to short cut the removal & clean up process just to avoid the costs.

    Pros:
    - Feeling of accomplishment when building is completed
    - Stay in shape
    - Pay is okay when starting out
    -
    Cons:
    - Start really early and finish late.
    - Exposed to the weather
    - Not uncommon to work 6 days a week
    - Body breaks down over time
    - Pay is just enough to afford basic necessities and bills.

    You should address the problem of builders paying apprentices as contractors bro

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All to common a problem. Businesses these days seem to be built on the contractor model despite the labour laws and full-time workers. What apprentices and young builders don't have the experience to understand is they need to earn double their hourly rate with the consequent overheads, costs and extra time.
