  • I think I've heightened the tension enough - here's the exciting conclusion to the restoration of this old Bakelite clock.
    It'll take me a while to get another video out to you as the Nice Lady ex-of the Hardware Store and I are still recovering from the COVID and, as we understand it, it takes quite a while. Do let me know in the comments if you have any experience or tips for accelerating recovery. Until then I hope you'll be patient; I promise to be back when I can, I've plenty of good stuff simmering in the workshop.
    'Til then and as always, God's greatest blessings and thanks so much for watching.

    Brilliant repair and remake of the Clock hands! You had me cracking up on the calling yourself, an idiot… I call myself that a few times a day! … I know the right thing to do, but my brain makes me do the wrong thing and then I break something and then I call myself an idiot. It’s like a never-ending repeating cycle! Look forward to your next video!

      @@MrFactotum There were enough mistakes in this one to make a dozen clocks! Who'd have thought there were so many things to go wrong? The acrylic paint was working out so well to start with. Oh well, the mistakes made the whole thing more entertaining. And informative, come to think of it. Cheers Kev, thanks for always looking in mate.

    Dear Sir
    So you finally did this and repaired the clock. You very tactfully created the exact copies of the hands of the clock. It was a miniature craft and you completed it with great patience and ease.❤❤❤❤❤❤

    I would have thought you would stick the plastic down with its protective covering on it so you could get it off without issue.... Always easy to be wise after the event. Good result in the end! May God bless you also!

    • @MarkMcCluney
      @MarkMcCluney  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Ben, yes that would have been the sensible option but you know me. In my defence I should say that I got this sheet of acrylic half price at B&Q because it had the corner broken off and the protective film was flapping around - it always pays to ask for a discount in these places. Of course I could have turned it over and used the film on the other side but as we've already established, I'm not very smart. Thanks for always looking in mate, and thanks for reiterating that hope of God's blessings, it's wonderfully encouraging for me. Incidentally, aren't we due a few videos from you soon?

    There is some true dedication there. If you got paid minimum wage, what would the clock be worth 🙂 At some point it becomes more about the challenge. I was wondering why you didn't just duplicate the minute hand rather than both. Perhaps they would look a little different? I hope you recover soon from the Covid. I had it once almost 4 years ago. It may have helped my immune system because I haven't had a cold since then, which is unusual.

    • @MarkMcCluney
      @MarkMcCluney  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're quite right Tom, I really only needed to make a new minute hand but that occurred to me only a few hours after I'd finished making both! Well, at least they're a matched pair. And yes, I understand what you mean about value of these sorts of projects. And the videos - paying someone to edit these would cost proper money. The only thing I can suggest is that they are labours of love, for all of us who do such things, and all the better for that. Thanks for looking in mate.

    Planing down the skewer in the vice was something I didn't think would work... until it did! And then the baking soda with glue and the bondo, the newspaper trick with the paint... I've learnt so many things. It's gorgeous, nice job mate!

    • @MarkMcCluney
      @MarkMcCluney  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ClintRoseCarving I didn't think it would work either! Actually I saw Matthias Wendell splitting a skewer with a knife blade a few weeks later. It might be a bit smug but I think my version was a lot more satisfying. The newspaper thing was something I think I picked up in conversation with my chum Baconsoda, an excellent wood turner. It worked pretty well but then I messed the whole thing up with the wax finish. Oh well, we live and learn. Cheers Clint and thanks for always looking in.

    That's marvellous. I loved your rant and watching you beat yourself up over the solvent! Just for interest... newspaper, as an abrasive, is equivalent to about P20000 and, when I worked in Canada we used it to clean staind glass windows because it removed marks gently, espcially on red glass that had gold in it (as part of the production process but was susceptible to colour change if abraided coarsly). I can hardly wait for your next complicated, frustrating, project.
    Best Wishes to you both, Brendan.

    • @MarkMcCluney
      @MarkMcCluney  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@baconsoda I think it might have been you who told me about the mild abrasiveness of newspaper in the first place! I knew I'd heard it somewhere, and it actually worked very well. It was the wax that messed up the acrylic paint. Oh well, it worked out for the best in the end. And as for frustrating projects, I've got a harmonium in the garage that I've been saving for a million years or so...

      @@WoodenItBeNice Thanks so much Huw and I really appreciate you having watched the whole thing - I realise it was quite a long haul. That carpet tape is fantastic stuff in the right place but I keep using it for temporary bonds when I know it's permanent once that adhesive gets a grip. The unforgivable part is using that sticky stuff remover - I knew for a fact that would damage the plastic. What a twit! Oh well, all's well that ends well. It's up on the kitchen wall, it's keeping good time and it's already part of the furniture. Cheers Huw and thanks for your constant support, I know you understand how encouraging that is.
