    Hi, coming to this late! 😂 Great video. I’ve restored quite a few of these vices. The QR problem I’ve seen before, and is usually fixed by the cleaning you did at the end of the video (and tightening the spring): clean off all the dirt and old oil, sand the rails smooth, lubricate. If needed, new springs can be bought on eBay. I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more videos. Cheers, Darren.

      @@darrenwheatley4677 Thanks for looking in Darren, I really appreciate it. I use that vice almost daily and it's still going strong. I think I had a quick look for a replacement torsion spring at the time (without success of course) but honestly I don't really miss the lack of the quick release. The idea was a zero-cost repair anyway! Cheers mate, thanks again and I hope you'll have a look at some of my other vids, I think they'll give a giggle or two. Oh and thanks for the sub - I'm taking a wee break at the moment but I'll be back sometime soon.

    (3rd attempt at comment)Sorry I am late to the 'party' Mark. I was fascinated to watch this video as I have one (a 53E) on my bench which has a history.
    My late uncle had mine on his bench in a company called Lainchburys of Kingham, when they closed down in 1987 he took 'his' vice and fitted it to his own bench, I always admired these vices and he promised to leave it to me. A matter of weeks before he died he brought the vice to me saying "if anything happens to me you might not get it so you can have it now" He sadly died at age 90 after falling and hitting his head.
    The vice is fitted on my bench and every time it's used it reminds me of my uncle who I had huge respect for. They are superb vices, fortunately mine works perfectly, inc the quick release but your video will be most helpful if mine fails although I think I might make the plate out of a bit of scrap metal rather than wood.
    Regarding your comment about not using the QR, you don't miss it if you have never had it but once you get used to it you soon find it so useful and would miss it.
    Thanks for the video and sorry about my rambling long comment.

      That's a terrific story John, and don't worry about rambling - I love rambling! I wish I could hear a lot more of your stories.
      The plywood was originally intended as a template for a metal version but for two reasons; firstly I'm too lazy to start ferreting around for a suitable bit of steel, let alone cutting, drilling and filing, and secondly, the plywood has been soldiering along without any trouble for more than a year now (I'd been sitting on that footage for quite a while.) There's nothing more permanent than a temporary solution, if it works. Thanks for perserving and leaving the comment. I'm so glad I heard the tale of your uncle's vice - it's amazing how lots of our older tools have stories connected to them. Cheers John and thanks again.

    Right... I was watching this thinking I had a similar vice so I went out and checked and, sure enough it's a Record 52 + 1/2 and, when I was given it I wondered why the quick-release had been removed. Now I know why. It seems coincidences are following us about! (Five years later I still have to mount it... laziness is my strength)

    • @MarkMcCluney
      @MarkMcCluney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rob! I'm ahead of you there mate; not only has the bench already been resurfaced but it's already splashed with paint and suchlike. I've been sitting on this video for the best part of a year. It's probably not obvious but this is the bench that I did all the work in restoring the little classical guitar which was my last vid but one (two if you count the little audio clip one). As for identifying wood, I've got no clue mate - I can just about tell the difference between timber and MDF, telling species apart is completely beyond me. And the spanner on the screwdriver thing is a good old trick especially helpful for the machine screws that hold on brake drums. That big screwdriver has a most useful square section shaft but lots of woody screwdrivers have a hex shank at the handle joint. It's not a universal design but it's not unusual, on this side of the Pond anyway. Glad you had fun watching this one mate, even though it was rather a long haul. Love to all the family and thanks for your constant support, I honestly appreciate it.

      My mechanic's vice has a quick release and I think I said in the video that I didn't use it much. Now that I'm conscious of it I realise that I use it all the time! But it's no big deal not having one on the other vice, winding it by hand doesn't take much effort or time. And thinking of the money I've saved helps a lot! Thanks for looking in Clint.

  • @hfbowerndesigns810
    @hfbowerndesigns810 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good repair by the looks of it considering the age of the vise. Not sure a metal plate with a bolt on back and front would do a better job on forcing the screw section down. A bit of silicone lube on the shaft may do something to easy the turning. But you got it going better than what you started with and that is a huge accomplishment
    Take care Mark
    Cheers
    Harold

    • @MarkMcCluney
      @MarkMcCluney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're right Harold; originally I intended that the plywood would be a template for a 3mm steel plate as soon as I found a suitable scrap but the plywood has been performing well without any trouble for about a year now (I've been sitting on this vid for a while!) A second 'pressure' bolt at the back sounds very sensible - I can't think why it didn't occur to me at the time. Oh well, no harm done as the vice is functioning well. Thanks for looking in again Harold and always commenting, it's wonderfully encouraging and I'm genuinely grateful. Cheers mate.

It also took a few months to complete as I had more immediate things to attend to. Ah well, it is better than no vice at all. Unless you are doing a lot of work, you can manage without the quick release.
