Those guys could barely play their instruments or sing.. It tells people and their middle class values to F off, and it spits in your face. This song is too well crafted, too sophisticated, complicated , soft, lyrical, melodic, and well played and sung to fit that category of music. When they started, in my San Francisco Bay Area, in the late 80's/early 90's (yes they are THAT OLD) they were , I am told , genuine hard core punk, and then they "went mainstream ", their early fans hated them because they "sold out". I think he just got bored with the simplicity of punk because (clearly) he has a gift for songwriting, and singing and his music is too complex and beautiful to fit in the little bag of noise and attitude that was called Punk rock. All that historical blah blah aside, you're right. It is a beautiful song, whatever the label or genre is. Cheers.
dude green day concerts are like 3 hours long and billie joe does this song at very last. so obvio he will be tired as heck jumping around and shouting and you can look out for other live where he really hit those notes in falsetto beautifully.
