This was on purpose. For safety of competitors. Almost everyone 100kg+. This is some kind of sport. Not the hunger Games.
But yeah. Shorter opponents has disadvantage.

It was explained in the original Punch Down tournament. Although their explanation doesn't make very much sense. Their explanation was that the width of the table will magically prevent knockouts. Which isn't the case at all. There are rules about where you should slap the face. So if there was no table, you should still only be slapping in the same area. Their solution tends to only put shorter armed individuals at a disadvantage.

Those tables are WAY too broad. Some of the contenders can just about reach the opponent with their fingers while leaning forward. A real slap has to deliver its might with the palm.

A slap is upper palm and the fingers, what you're describing is more like a palm strike which isn't a slap and is a huge problem with some who compete in these. I feel the wider table is there to help prevent that.
