So I recently learned quite a bit about rubies…. They’re so cheap the glass filled ones. I heard someone recently say on a video they had a ruby that wasn’t heat treated. It took me down a rabbit hole. Basically, and I’m oversimplifying and don’t know Jack about rubies except for this great documentary I watched that there are three types of rubies: - unheated - heated -glass filled They classify rubies according to something called the 4C’s and OT. The four C’s relate to weight, clarity, cut and colour. The OT is treatment of the ruby and o is the origin of the ruby. All of these will determine the price of it. Glass filled rubies are sometimes considered “composites”, because they aren’t 100% rubies. Heat treatment is literally a permanent process that is heating rubies in a crucible to improve their colour and clarity. Natural rubies can be somewhat milky in appearance which is why they treat them, but a good quality, unheated ruby of good origin (certain countries are preferred over others, like an Afghanistan ruby isn’t as valuable as a Myanmar ruby, or more commonly known as a “Burmese Ruby”) that meets the highest qualities of the 4Cs go for the most. While composite rubies that are glass filled are worth mere dollars for a 1 carat stone, there is a huge chasm between that and even heat treated rubies. Another awesome thing about rubies? They fluoresce under a UV light. The less iron in your Ruby, the more it will fluoresce. They are also one of the original gemstones considered worthy of royalty and trading, along with diamonds and emeralds and sapphires and a couple of others. And that’s all I know about rubies. That’s not true - in the documentary they showed us the bubbles you can see in a glass filled/composite Ruby and the cracks that form as well. *EDITED TO SAY THAT…* a few people have rightly corrected me. I said the four Cs and then proceeded to list three Cs and then a word not beginning with C. The four “Cs” are: - Cut - Clarity - Colour - Carat ….this is the one I mislabelled. I did describe it correctly, but I meant to say carat, which refers to the size and weight of the stone, which will of course, like the other “Cs” affect the value of the stone. OT refers to: *”Origin”* - where the stone came from, which again, has an impact on price *”Treatment”* - how the stone is treated, as in the case for rubies, refers to if it has been heated or if it has been infused with glass, which after reading the above, we all know devalues the stone and makes it a composite - not a true Ruby, but a composite of different materials. Thank you to those of you who caught this or asked about it and I hope this clears it up! I wanted to say that everyone on this comment thread has been so very kind and lovely, and you don’t get a lot of that when posting on TH-cam, so I wanted to say a big *_THANK YOU_* to everyone! ❤️ 🇨🇦 Expat living in the 🇬🇧
Well i think we all know that he is gonna sell it anyways the next day saying something like "the best quality from Colombia, only for you my friend" 😂
relaxing? definitely not. Interesting for sure though, and not to mention mildly infuriating. I kinda hate watching him totally rip these people off. But i gotta give it to him, hes great at what he does.
Another tip for rubies is a blacklight don't forget to get a blacklist flashlight for the handy dandy ruby finds lol plus I would never have bought that ruby look at the cracks and inclusions just with a camera and naked eye lol
this is awesome do you have a school you can have a students you can post on your knowledge I'm very interested I'm old but can still learn something please , a response for this request not too many people have knowledge like you all this is just a hobby?
Hey avi, can you recommend a "good enough" gem microscope I can buy? I see you used a novax p-10 is that perfect for determining if gems are natural? Any other good ones that aren't super expensive? Thanks so much for the help
Question I bought a parcel of Cheaper low low low low low quality rubies. I can find bubbles in like three or four of the 21 that I bought but I cannot find bubbles in the other ones. Is there another way of telling other than the fissures on the outside and the bubbles on the inside? I'm just trying to figure stuff out
Maybe do a video on what glass filled it's? Also, I've seen "S925" more frequently on 'silver' jewellery, but it doesn't have the weight to be sterling silver and 'gf' when it comes to gold. Maybe you could do a video on those as extra content too?
Certain stones can crack, chip and even scratch but when you get a stone that looks like that its pretty obvious just holding it the things fake. I have a ring with an artifically grown ruby in it thats over 30 years old, the silver ring its in is beaten to hell and back but the ruby is still perfectly smooth
Was it in gold or ??? That seems like it could have been a scam not from now but from long ago someone family’s family’s ago used this ring to do tricks on folks of towns !!!! Passed around or somehow re bought back used throughout
I think the person that spends a significant amount of money on jewellery likely deserves to be swindled, especially considering where these ultra expensive gems come from and the quality of life the people that tend to mine them are. Give the money to a charity instead of blowing it on a rock.
Avi will you teach me how to negotiate? Ik how to use refractometer, spectroscope, microscope, sg, dicroscope, uv lamp and I have knowledge about synthetic and natural gemstones but sadly no marketing skills of rate of gemstones a little in diamond tho pls make me you assistant I'll work for free
A ruby that clear is hard to find. They should have just faceted what they could from the stone instead of treat it, also could have made an amazing Star Ruby with beautiful clarity if it had titanium oxide (Rutile) inclusions in it. A lot of people are in the gemstone industry just to make a quick dollar, but thankfully there are people who see the value and beauty of art in leaving stones in their natural states, who wont fill a Ruby with glass. I would also like to add, Star Sapphires and Rubies are underrated, they are way cooler than faceted clear stones in my opinion. I also just love gemstones that have visual effects to them, like some types of Feldspar, Quartz, and many other gemstone species. Here in Georgia we have Star Rose Quartz, and it looks amazing. I think I actually found a piece for a ring that has a double 6 ray star, giving it 12 rays. I dont know for sure if it is Rose Quartz or something else though, a lot of gemstones can have the inclusions and crystal structure that creates Asterism or Chatoyancy or Schiller
Can some one explain what glass filled means? So you some how find a gem, hollow it out, and fill it with glass? Or is it just glass with coloring from the start?
My home made Ruby come out nearly indistinguishable from natural Ruby after cleaning and faceting. You would literally need to be an expert at identifying fake Ruby/Sapphire to figure it out.

Most of "cheap" rubies are either glass filled or synthetic.
its super common to fill cracks and other imperfections to make the ruby look more “perfect”
