Good to know! But don't forget about hardness too - since corundum is one of the hardest minerals on Earth, it should be able to scratch just about any other mineral (except diamond).
Gemmologist try to stay away from using the scratch test for obvious reasons. Mineralogists, however, have no such restriction as they do not typically deal with expensive gem quality specimens.
I wish there were classes for people who do gemstones as hobbies as opposed to professionals that would be awesome but this channel is very very helpful thanks again
my son got me an unknown but beautiful crystal for the holidays. based on the information provided in this video, the crystal checks out to be sapphire 🎉 i love youtube, i’ll still ask my moms neighbor lol she’s a jeweler. but i’m thankful for the info regardless 😇
Great video Rebecca. Loving the dark hair, and how confident you’ve become in these fun videos. Hope everyone at the Jtv studios, and your family are doing well.
I'd love for you to feature white sapphires as a diamond alternative. Or just do a video on selecting the best diamond alternative for durability and value. So it's for the purpose of enjoying them as jewelry where the same sized diamonds would cost a fortune.
I cant wait to hit the gem fields up the road from me and look for sapphires!!!! I hope i get as lucky as the the guy in the news last week whom found an 800 carat beauty out there hehehehehe awesome video thanks for sharing
I used to have this beautiful oval cut deep blue sapphire ring that my grandmother gave me for my birthday, but the gold band got crushed so I put it in my grandmother’s jewelry box to keep it safe until we could get it fixed, and when that day came it was missing. We never found it 😔
I know it's unaccesible to most, but the best (most definitive) method would be to acquire a quick raman spectrum, or chemical composition with XRF or EPMA.
@@gems I have one. Plus a diamond tester, and a Gem Tester. I think I'm trying to determine the types of stones. Likebis it an Almadine garnet etc... Thanks! I find your videos very informative and fun!
A total lack of inclusion suggests synthetic, warrant for sending the sample to advanced lab for further testing. Also fluorescence patten may differ between natural and synthetic stones.
I have a 3.21 royal blue Salon Sapphire for sale with three carats of VVS diamonds the ring is 18 karat gold absolutely gorgeous what's the best way to sell it
Never mentioned that sapphires can be a multitude of colours. I live in central Queensland and there is a huge area here that contains sapphires. Many are particoloured stones.
Hey 👆👆👆 look up the handle above sells and delivers 💎 and gems at any location🌎✈️ dude is real and legit and has the best price ever tested and trusted 💯😊
I have a pair of earrings that are solid white gold, real diamond halos and about 2 carats each blue stone - they are the corn flower blue - so not dark sapphire and I’m dying to know if they are real sapphires!

That was wonderful, but what if your stone is lab created. What helps us to determine if its a natural or lab created stone. And not all of us can afford or have access to any of these machines. i have a loupe, but thats it. Sapphires come in so many different colors naturally, and you talked briefly about dichroism, how do we know how to facet a gem, to bring out the best color possible?
There are a few observable indications of a lab grown sapphire, including curved growth lines and little torpedo shaped growth bubbles...but these aren't always apparent, nor the same for different growth methods. Spotting synthetics can be very complicated. We've touched on it before, and will do again...The same can also be said for cutting methods to bring out the best color, but we will do our best to address that soon.
hello good day and happy new year greetings from connecticut you know i would like to ask you please i used the diamond tester the presidium multi tester 3 on a rough blue sapphire. It is gigantic but the tester gives me as if it were a diamond and it is in almost all the rock. Could you guide me a little more about this? Diamond. Thanks for your patience. I have the basic tools but I don't have a microscope to see it in more detail.
Seriously....look through sapphire, if it has bubbles its fake, if not, check for silk and you have a sapphire. This goes for most of gemstones. No need for 7 min video explaining all that lol
i like the information you provide ; however, your presentation skills need honing. DON''T JIGGLE AROUND SO MUCH!! Your jerky movements are very annoying and distract from the information you are trying to convey.
Yes, as a gemmologist wannabe, please post more of these helpful videos. I’ll go to school eventually but want to get a head start. 🙏🏻
I agree. I definitely would like to see more educational videos like this one.
Wannabe here too!

Great advice, yes, eyes first. I trust the refractometer. Look for hexagonal banding, curves show synthetic. Thanks for sharing.

I recently started looking into purchasing a yellow/orange sapphire. This video taught me so much about checking gems. Thank you!
Thank you! Great presentation !
The best presentation I’ve seen this evening from looking at several yt vids on the same topic.
I have no practical use for this knowledge, but I find it fascinating. And Rebecca's a great presenter btw.
Excellent presentation

Thank u very much… beautiful video…
I love anything blue or green, so cool!
Good explain thanks lot "observation First"
Wonderful video! Thank you
Glad you liked it!
My birthstone is sapphire!! Love it!!
How do you tell the difference between a lab created and natural sapphire?? Does anyone know!
The growth pattern of the crystal structure will be rounded or wavy on the lab grown, and straight lines on the natural.
Also florescence may be different between natural and synthetic stones.
A total lack of inclusion suggests synthetic, warrant for sending the sample to advanced lab for further testing. Also fluorescence patten may differ between natural and synthetic stones.
So the wavy lines of a lab grown and the straight lines on a natural are visible by using a lube or just by looking at the stone?
Black light helps me tell what's real
What blue gem(s) would fluores orange?
Several might, including sodalite. Check out our video here to see Afghanite: th-cam.com/video/jOMqVLpdISE/w-d-xo.html

Yes, im surprised she neglected to talk about that. I love different colored sapphires. The colors I love most are deep pink, yellow and purple.

Would a scratch test be useful?
Where can I find that absorption chart shown for various stones?

Sapphires come in many colors, not only blue.
Yes! But we decided to start with the most recognizable form, since this is just supposed to be a basic primer on identification
sooo its not quick nor easy
That moving background is so disturbing .

Seems a bit complicated to me. Fun, but complicated.
Well, we tried to keep it easy and basic. It can get a lot more complicated when you get into treatments and synthetics.
