Continuity problems aside, I think Prisoner of Azkaban is easily the best score of the franchise and probably one of John Williams’s best works.

Eh, to me it just doesn't have the emotional impact of the first two, and there's continuity problems even without the first 2 scores. "Double Trouble" was an essential theme within this film that just gets dropped in the second half inexplicably.
Also the medieval instruments that everyone acts like is exclusive to this score were prominent in the first film as well. Though I do think tracks like this, "Buckbeak's Flight", and the choral scenes are some of the best in the series.

@@Superultramegaa19 There is just not a single dull moment in prizoner. It has everything from Atonal Horror, Waltzes, Incredible Action Music, Crazy Jazz to Wonderful lyrical themes that get developed and pay off beautifully. I think Prizoner is the best Score. And to your point of the Double Trouble not showing up in the second half, that doesnt really bother me cause it just doesnt really need to be there anymore, there isnt really any point where its appropriate anymore. Im not saying this to diminish the First Score btw. There both very close of course. But Prizoner is still my favourite.

@@jessemoog5310 It is a great score, but to me, it's like if Return of the Jedi didn't have Vader's theme, Han and Leia's theme, Leia's theme, and the force theme was only played once at the end. Yeah, there's a lot of great stuff still at that point, but the entire story is at least half gone musically.
I do love the stylistic differences you mentioned, but at the expense of all of the musical storytelling that was set up so well in the previous two? It's not worth it to me. Yes there's lovely new lyrical melodies, but we've lost every other lyrical melody that mattered.

Williams' music is just so masterfully organic to the movie. Blends in perfectly but the movie watcher still notes its beauty. Sublime annotations!

Thanks a lot for the score reduction! I truly think the Lily and James' theme (most known front in A Window to the Past) is a truly beautiful and extremely underrated John Williams theme.

absolutely! If you want it to hit differently, listen to the cue "Sirius and Harry" (outside of the Shrieking Shack when they are looking at the castle).
this entry into the theme with that one french horn note suspension is just sooooooo beautiful it is amazing!

Thank you for this analysis! 😊
Actually I am currently writing my bachelors thesis about the phenomenon of 4 composers working on one franchise and the effect it had in the case of Harry Potter regarding leitmotif consistency.
I am happy that it is not just me (and the youtuber Inside The Score) that thinks the inconsistency in Harry Potter Scores is a waisted opportunity.
(I love every single HP score on its own, by the way, it is just the aspect of the overall consistency that bothers me)

I loved the use of harpsichord and solo wind instruments in the score for Prisoner of Azkaban, also there is a more complex/intense use of rhythm at times. It really gives it a unique feel and it matches the cold, snowy and rainy theme that the film has. Maybe it doesn't have the same emotional impact as the first two scores have, but this must have been intentional. The film is a coming of age story. Harry starts learning more about his personal history/legacy and his relation to the world. The themes are more melancholic and introspective. It is a more thoughtful score for a more thoughtful film.

Prisoner of Azkaban is the best movie in the series, because it also works great as a standalone movie. Period. And it also has the best score. First two films were okay in their own merit, but they were more or less a detective stories with wizards. With Prisoner of Azkaban, series started to deal with more mature themes, hence the darker overall tone of this and all subsequent movies. People should really read books, movies have left so much important stuff out, it hurts. First three were great, it all went downhill after that.

thanks again for this, its one of my favourites. i pretty much only watch the first two movies the most because of the warm lighting of the hogwarts castle. it feels the most welcoming and magical and then the movies change. prisoner is still nice because of the music and the beginning of the movie still gives me a bit of that feeling when they ride in the castle when its rainy and so on, but the rest is kind of cold and bit depressing.

Hi Ben, could I know where do you found the score to reduce? It's a brilliant work your videos

I’ve always considered the Lily and James theme more of the Marauders theme - it plays for Lily and James, but almost all of Lupin’s scenes and when Sirius flies away as well

This theme basically replaces the "Family Theme" from the first two films with a similarly broad interpretation of the idea of family, but I don't want to refer to it as that to avoid confusion.
I wouldn't class it as the "Marauder's Theme", firstly because Lily wasn't a Marauder and this theme never represents Pettigrew, even when he is thought to be innocent. And secondly because there is a separate motif that I consider to be the "Marauder's Motif" built from double chromatic neighbour tones.
This theme shows up in Lupin's scenes when he is referring to Harry's parents and plays for Sirius at the end as a signifier that Harry is starting to see him as a father figure.
Ultimately, I think the best way to consider this would be the "New Family Theme", but that's all quite confusing.

@@BenSmithFilm makes sense, ultimately I think we blame whoever decided not to reuse leitmotifs across films the music of this series is a complete mess lol. Thanks for the analysis!

Completely agree with your points here. Prisoner and Goblet at least have shreds of Colombus' style such as use of practical sets and effects, colorful music overall, and the ghosts of Hogwarts still... existing, but the complete dismissal of the old themes, the tone, and the original Hogwarts design really loses the series' magic and what made it unique.
Like you said, it just kind of feels like a generic high school movie with magical elements, rather than the reverse. That being said, this is still a great score despite its numerous issues, as shown here.

A hundred percent agree, the scores to three and four are brilliant in their own right. And I really like Patrick Doyle's arrangement of Hedwig's Theme, just not quite as magical as the earlier films.
