    THANK YOU. I have had a bad taste in my mouth about all of these services ever since I heard about fiverr back when it started. I was like "haaangon people are going to want to pay me $5 for a design after I worked my ass off to get my graphic design degree? no thanks". And I feel like the whole thing just devalues design work and treats designers like machines.

      Yesss exactly! I feel the AIGA should regulate prices so as to not undervalue creatives.

    As an anarchist, the moment you compared these sites to “little governments”, I felt that.
    And you are right on about it. I’m working on my Fiverr profile right now and my initial feeling is that the more I invest in this platform and others like it, the more I see my energy, love and passion being destroyed.
    Great video, thank you for your wisdom and perspective!

      Yes I feel the same way. I'm working on my Fiverr account, and I'm not sure exactly how to set it up, but I noticed that others have and there are so many graphic design freelancers that I doubt I would ever get noticed. I do have my own graphic design website, but I have to add more content to it. After reading through everyone's pain points, I'm going to focus on continuing to brand my own business and work on getting clients and referrals.

    Hey Lauren! Thank you for the lovely breakdown on these services. They always left a nasty aftertaste in my mouth.
    On a different note, let me ask you: Why do you and so many other creatives resort to teaching design on social medias, and less about sharing the design work you do in other areas of your life? It can feel discouraging to feel more "hustle" mindset entrepreneurs default to "edu" carousels instead of actually designing and sharing your work. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and even more so, I'd be willing to talk about this if you wanted to make it a segment!
    Thank you again!

    • @4TheCreatives
      @4TheCreatives  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Hello Siah! You know it's an interesting point you bring up.
      When I see other designers who are trying to get more design clients who are only creating content for other designers, that tells me they don't understand who their target audience is and where to find them and that their purpose is just to get likes on their posts. What I can tell you is that I have my design business running very well and I am actively working on designs daily for clients. I have the machine running without needing to post my creative designs all of the time because clients find me through podcasts I've been on, blogs and in communities from my target audience niche. On this channel, I like to sprinkle it with actual design projects I am working on so that you can get a flavor for what I do, but that is not my sole focus here, because I am not trying to attract design clients through this channel. I want to help designers become aware of the need for them to learn how to market and sell their services.
      For me, I struggled immensely to get design clients when I started my freelance business and I finally found what was working and tested it out for 4 years seeing I could create a very solid design business. I then got really excited and passionate about helping other designers to understand why they were struggling and give them guidance. That is why I have created my TH-cam channel and IG. Then my followers asked to go deeper with me, so I created a whole coaching program so I could help them out even further for those that want to.

    Thanks for your video. It never made sense to me to get work by submitting a low ball bid. Maybe it works for freelancers who do simple thoughtless cookie cutter designs to use one of these platforms. For me, I don't believe any platform that pits designers against each other for the lowest bid could possibly be supportive of building the clientele I want to cultivate. You cannot build your business working for $3 an hour.

    • @4TheCreatives
      @4TheCreatives  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      👏Exactly! I don’t like the competing aspect either. And that’s why I’m such an advocate of finding a niche because you remove 99% of the competitors and can instead appreciate each creative’s specialty 😊

    Hey there! I've discovered your channel today and started watching your videos. I really like the content you create, your message is always accurate and precise. This video was no exception. The only thing I am not very fond of about the channel so far is the background music. It might be just me not being a fan of background music in the TH-cam videos but I don't generally mind them when they're barely heard. I found the music in your videos a bit too loud for my liking but maybe that's just me.

    Excellent review!!! These design platforms are about pleasing the clients and increasing their incomes by keeping the cost of design low. It attracts clients looking for cheap but excellent work. It could be a good way for a new designer to gain experience but only a lucky few can earn a living with them. I think it diminishes the value of design in general. Good review. Thank you.

    With Upwork you just to need to not work for cheap and not race others to the bottom on proposals. Also you need to be good at design/code and actually have an outstanding portfolio. People that don't do well are probably not that talented or are not charging enough. There are only two types of people racing others to the bottom on price, the not-so-talented ones and the ones just starting out.

    You're right, _NONE_ of them are!
    ...Fiverr is at the bare minimum (usually like its namesake - $5), and a client has the potential to dispute the $5 after they get the artwork, and get their money refunded, at the expense of the creator, which is done often!
    ...With 99Designs, it's a crowdsourcing "contest", where only the best creation is accepted and the one that will pay... Thing is that the "contests" are often abandoned, thus giving a client many different types of free submissions that they can decide upon, and then send the desired one to their own graphic artist for duplication and finishing, and pay absolutely nothing for creation!
    ...Upwork (formerly ODesk) has a "low cost bid limit" of $50 for a creator in a fully developed country... Thing is that a creator in a developing country is protected by international law, and is exempt from bidding a $50 "low bid", and can bid even lower ($25, $10, or even $5), and usially get the project, AND the client on a permanent basis!
    The other two are strictly "galleries" where one MIGHT get noticed for a project (usually it works like 99Designs, giving clients all kinds creative content to send to their own designers for free)
    Order of the day for all of them is "Cheap", "Cheaper", and "Free"!
