    In one video, “If you can take it apart with your hands you know you have a problem.” Made me smile thinking about how we took out our deck without any tools. Literally had joists just sitting in the hangers not connected.

      Bought my house in 2015, been renovating since. Demolished the deck in 2020....could lift the corner of the deck and start pulling apart. My wife wanted to put a hot tub on it, lol. Built a new one....Completely overbuilt, NOT going anywhere.

    That pipe with no plate was scary AF. That was basically a long term hole saw and after awhile the same effect as smashing a straw wrapper. Crazy.

    Mike, I wish you were in the U.S.. I need help. I bought a house 2 years ago. I'm a first time homeowner at 54 years of age. I bought without conditions like an inspection. Previous owners only took cash offers not through a bank. I didn't know any better. Now I'm having issues. Yard is flooded, septic tank is too small and storm water fills it up causing sewage to sweep out. While yard smells like septic. No insulation in walls or attic. Very narrow crawl space so I or contractors can't get in. Floor joists gave away in bedroom causing dresser to tip over. No joist hangers and rusty nails. Electric plugs have no ground. Just 2 prongs. Holes in Soffit where birds and cats get in. The toilet is sinking from the soft floors. Sill plates and studs in the garage are rotting from all the flooding in the yard. Insulation in the garage has asbestos. The ceiling in the garage is sagging in the middle. Paint on the outside of the house is just primer. Windows are not insulated. Front door seals leak air. No HVAC system. Just ventless propane heaters on the wall. I have a lot more going on with the house. It's gonna cost me thousands of dollars I didn't count on when buying the house. I need help and don't know who to turn to. I bought a lemon house because it was what I could afford. Nice neighborhood and I love my back yard when it's not flooded. My trees are dying because of the flooding. Please, if you know someone in the U.S. that does what you do I really need their help. Please, I'm begging you.

      I'm a pretty heavy guy. So, maybe with me and my brother it could work. But, generally speaking, I don't think that's the way engineers do it. And what happens when it fails? Two guys end up in the basement?

  • @anthonyurban2589

    I do indeed like this show and the man that it is centered around. but i have to ask....do any of these so called problem contractors ever get arrested or fined or jail time?

    • @Smart-Towel-RG-400
      @Smart-Towel-RG-400 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very rare ... I think only once a contractor on any of his shows were charged and most walk away from lawsuits after Mike made it right wasn't worth spending the money cuz even with a judgement probly can't collect on it

    • @ronbennett7885
      @ronbennett7885 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Generally, no unless the contractor only takes money and does nothing in return. Most often, the authorities consider disputes over work quality to be a civil matter. Suing takes time and costs money. Even when one wins, unlikely to collect on the judgement. It's truly buyer beware with home improvements.

    I'm been working over to get my basement done. I'm afraid to hire anyone because so many companies want the money but cut corners. I wish I could hire Mr. Holmes before I waste my hard earned money.

    It's unfortunate that it took the bulkhead falling down on one of the drywallers before they decided to speak up to the homeowner about the horrible framing and structure. They had total intentions of completely covering over that garbage and then it would of been another one of those homes that looks all nice and finished but has tons of structural issues that home inspectors can't see. So then they give the sign-off that it's all good. Next thing you know Mike Holmes is coming in to fix a bunch of stuff. Makes me think that the drywallers might be the main issue here. Obviously, bad contract framers and builders are a big reason. But it's the drywallers a lot of times who comes in and completely covers over top of crappy framing, plumbing and wiring, and then they don't say anything.

    • @TheWabbit
      @TheWabbit หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nothing! Canada and USA are the same when it comes to contractors and Inspectors, good luck and even if you win you won't be able to collect your money. The laws are made to protect them and there's no laws to protect us. Then when you go to sell the city inspector says this and this has to be fixed before you can sell.

    Excellent renovation with a minor exception. No handrail on the other side of the stairs at 32:18. Presumably not required, but would be safer. Even falling a few feet can lead to serious injury. The spray foam works very well and widely used, but still wonder about its safety compared to other types of insulation.

    I liked Mike when he was more hands on in the renos, in the new show he is just the foreman and telling everyone what to do, I would like Mike to be hands on again and show MJ what he can do.

      I think it was because of an injury he suffered that he really can’t be as involved with the projects as he was before, but you know he will go over everything properly

      Contractors have a golden range 25 to 55 give or take 5 years due to injury and how much damage their bodies can handle. Holmes is pushing his at this point, and is stepping back and utilizing his brain instead of his body.

      @@3xfasterumm might be it but also during Holmes on homes and Holmes inspections I'm pretty sure he was still doing lots of contracting still off show so really needed to be hands on now he's media company is the main source of income and he has Staff he trusts to do it right so can be less hands on with the construction stuff

    There is nothing wrong with having a web based business like that guy did provided that there are quality control measures built into it. He has to have a way to guarantee that the people on his system are top notch contractors. Background checks, etc. If he can do that, it's a great system. If not, it's a complete disaster as we see here. The website is also deceptive in that it's telling the consumer that this guy is doing the work himself. The terms of the service need to be very carefully spelled out.

    Nothing is fireproof fire resistance brick is not fireproof. If you get brick hot enough, it will burn to a dust just like waterproof nothing is waterproof. It is water resistance to a certain depth, and then, after that depth, it will disintegrate.

    We've chosen to forego lots of renovations because too few contractors are trustworthy and there's no accountability. If contractors cared, the industry would support rather than oppose regulation and enforcement.

      The great recession of 2008 made matters worse. Many contractors left the business and many young people who had or were thinking about entering the trades were scared away due to the mass layoffs. 15 years later the effects are still being felt. Paying more is no guarantee either. Ultimately, one has to do more vetting of contractors and their subs than ever before. And keeping a close eye on the work, such as taking pictures every day. Maybe even posting on social media to get feedback from others.

    When is the part where Mike hands them the bill at full retail with a healthy business profit margin for them to cut the check for? Million dollar dreams of trailer park budgets and HGTV foots the bill. Must be nice. Where do I get my corporate welfare?
