    About This Video -
    Night Photography on the streets in the wind and rain is not the most comfortable shoot I've ever done. The results were hit and miss but I did get a few nice frames to print.
    I used JCH Street Pan 400 Speed Film which I pushed to 800. I needed to because I was freehand and needed that extra bit of speed.
    The film I developed in Rodinal 1:50 for 30 mins.

    When you're dodging those highlight areas but you don't want to lose the blacks, try making a dodging tool out of a piece of grade 5 filter or a blue lighting gel. It'll increase the local contrast (deepens shadows) but lightens the highlights because you're dodging. Tricky to think about, but it works.

    As someone who did a lot of night photography (including moving people), I basically push HP5+ to 1600/3200 just open up your aperture and drop to the lowest shutter speed you're comfortable with and hope for the best. With black and white I always stand develop for these kind of extremely high contrast low light scenes

    This would’ve been the perfect shoot to take out one of the Leicas! They excel in low light scenarios, no mirror slap or anything…. I find I can comfortably handhold down to 1/15 on a 50mm lens whereas you probably wouldn’t want to go below 1/60 on an SLR.

    For low light photography, I was once told to open up the aperture and use the slowest shutter speed you can hand hold. It has worked well for me. There’s never much danger of overexposing in low light with film.

    A couple of very nice images there Roger. Kudos to you for getting out of your comfort zone and trying something different. Personally, I wouldn't use a high contrast film and push it for night photography. What is at a premium at night photography is shadow detail and pushing an already high contrast film will only add to the misery. I would go for a film like Fuji Acros and pull it. Meter for the shadows ( not the deepest but about zone 3 1/2, using your Sekonic spot meter and then develop for the highlights. Unfortunately you will have to use a tripod, but on the plus side Fuji Acros does not need correction for reciprocity up to a minute or so of exposure, in my experience. Give it a go and see how you feel about it. Enjoyable video as usual.

    So, you're liking that StreetPan then I assume? Anyhoo, I reckon this is one of your best shoots for ages, but you know how much I like water on stone, all that texture and contrast, blimmin luverly! Now I've done this sort of thing myself especially back in the day when TriX was less than 2 quid a roll and the local chemist still sold KodacolorII. I must admit that I was after light trails but I found out, like you have, just how essential it is to take your tripod ;) Now, for a challenge, go do that again with a roll of Tmax or Delta 100, THEN you'll find out how essential a tripod is ;) Seriously, this is a brilliant shoot, made even better by the fact that you were just messing around. Azzie Knight has done something similar, I assume you've seen his shot of the church in the fog with a single street lamp?

    A trick I use is to carry a digital compact camera to use as a light meter. You can preview the the exposure setting just like having a Polaroid back! I always use a tripod to take the actual film shot, but no need to put the 'test' camera on it. You may like to give it a try.

    Blimey, shooting Street Pan at night *and* pushing it. I mean, that stuff is reeeealy contrasty in normal light, never mind nighttime light.
    I don't do a lot of night shooting, but any I have done, I've done with a small tripod. 100 speed film, f/8, 4 seconds (and maybe one at 8 seconds for luck). Works every time.
    Although that shot of the suit in the shop window is really great.

  • @TrashTheLens
    @TrashTheLens 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In my experience, when shooting this sort of night scenes on film, you really need to give it loads more exposure then you'd normally would and then shorten the development. So basically pull the film. Night scenes are very contrasty by nature and this is compounded by the fact that film is non-linear (i.e. has a toe where the deep shadows are). The result is very high contrast in the negs. Pushing the film makes this even more severe.
