10:25 Right click in the window, and you can switch from freehand drawing mode into point placing mode. You can enable grid snapping for the points, and have different line and point interpolation modes. Lines even has algorithms, such as triangle, sawtooths, etc. to create perfectly tuned phase rotations. You can replicate the effect of Kilohearts Disperser and similar plugins easily.

    Currently my go-to plugins are:
Channel strips: Scheps Omni Channel 2 (So musical, worth it just for the preamps, but then the eq is fabulous) or if that isn't what I'm after...SSL Native Channelstrip 2 (Sometimes I want a cleaner more polished sound, and eq'ing into SSL dynamics is such a classic sound). Both of those are absolutely solid channel strips and will do a lot of the legwork.
EQ: Pro-Q 3 - It's a standard workhorse. Sounds great, lovely interface. Generally I find the channel strip eq's are more musical and the Pro-Q 3 is more technical/surgical.
Tape: Either the A800 Studer from UA or J37 from Waves. Both are really really nice tape emulations.
Reverb: LX480 (for a fabulous Lexicon sound), Valhalla Vintage Reverb (again, lovely and rich) and Pro-R (when I want a real sounding space or 'that' polish).
Delay: Echoboy, H-Delay from Waves or Valhalla Delay. It's usually down to how much grit I want coming through, how dark I want things, how much the delay breaks up and smears over time etc. They all do a great job so it's just down to taste.
Saturation: Usually the preamps on the channel strips or Saturn 2. True Iron is super subtle but adds a bit of sparkle and solidity.
Dynamics: UA LA2A (It has that lushness and presence the original hardware has, esp when driven), Waves CLA-76 or Stillwell Rocket (When I need some smack), Waves DBX-160 (Usually for drum punch).
Bus Dynamics: SSL Native Bus, Waves SSL Bus Comp (I find the Waves has a bit more bite/grit than the SSL Native), Pro-MB (Just a touch to keep things under control).
Dirt and Grit: Waves Berzerk, NI Bite, NI Dirt, Soundtoys Decapitator, Fabfilter Saturn 2, Unfiltered Audio Dent/Indent, anything by Glitchmachines, RC-20 Retrocolour, loads of things to mess sound up. :)
Tools: ADPTR MetricAB (Great for AB'ing between a track and a reference, though Ozone does this now), SPL Hawkeye (For monitoring), Melda MAnalyser (Great for checking overall mix balance against a reference curve).
Obviously you don't need all these and many do more or less the same thing so I might pick whatever I'm feeling in the mood for, but these are my workhorses.

Sonible’s True Balance and True Level are permanently on my Master out. You’re absolutely right about not going too crazy with tweaking the differences. Once you put a few reference tracks into them and see all the differences, it’s actually a sigh of relief. Which is exactly why I love them. Sometimes my mixes need to be quieter. And that’s perfectly OK. Especially when I see my mixes compared to Brian Eno or Vangelis. Sonible tells me I’m doing just fine 😀

VoosteQ Model N is the one most talked about on Gearspace right now. Best plugin of the year they say, some say in many years.

The True Cuckoo episode of it is nothing but amazing.

Pro-Q3. My workhorse EQ for all my tv/film/streaming mixes. Pro-C2 is right there with it. My most used deessers are Pro-DS and AVA DeEsser, though I have and sometimes use several others. I love to live-denoise with Bertom Denoiser Pro. Offline it's RX and Acon Digital Extract Dialogue. I'm using the SplitEQ, but I often don't have the time to put it to proper use. Soothe is working the occasional magic on some dialogue tracks. Reverbs are Valhalla Room for stereo and Stratus and Verberate Immersive for 5.1. Pro-R v2 looks interesting. Testing it now for its great interface. That's all my basic stuff really.
I picked up the UAD 1176 collection for $50 because some fellow dialogue mixers always like those, and they're turning out to be pretty damn good. May become a new favorite.

It's not very much in vogue, but Andrew Scheps's Omni Channel is an amazing channel strip that does a million things well and has incredible flexibility. It can be extremely transparent or used to add character. It is my default in-the-box channel strip. Soothe 2 is a newer one that I cannot live without. It's just too easy for fixing specific problems or generally making a great mix sound even better.

    • @DaftFader
      @DaftFader ปีที่แล้ว +1

Omni 2 was mine too for a bit, but then I heard aliasing when I was adding heavy saturation to something, and looked into it and it does cause audible aliasing (on some program material when using saturation) due to having no OS (sadly). So now I only use it on background things, or things that don't need non linear processing. It's a really versatile channel strip, it's so sad it has that issue as otherwise it would of been perfect and I would still use it on everything.

With iso rx, Steinberg (makers of cubase) have their own program that does similar things with ai generated algorithms called spectral layers. It's really good at what it does, and you can almost perfectly (almost) remove full vocals or instrument parts from mixed tracks etc. It's never 100% perfect like with all these "unmixing" solutions, but it's SO so useful when doing any kind of audio restoration work, and it's constantly getting better and better at doing it in each subsequent version release. And for a cubase user like myself, makes more sense as it can be loaded up in cubase as a extension and it seamlessly integrates with it. They also have it in Steinberg's new vst format .ARA (Steinberg are the inventors of the .vst & .vst3 standard btw), which should make integration into other modern DAWs much more seamless too. 🤟

Hi, in RX 11 there is a similar feature built in to allow to lead it into dawas like spectralayers int cubase. but it only supports Apple Logic right now, more to come in the future, i hope. I used both, RX and SL, maybe it`s just a feeling, but it feels more clumsy and less hi tech. both are good tho, maybe i`m freaking out

My fave single plugins are probably Eventide UltraChannel and Octavox.
Its unfortunate most people look at the interface of Octavox and think its an arpeggiator rather than a micropitch delay.
Ultrachannel is just an absolute swiss army knife - 2 compressors, 5 band EQ, Gate, stereo delay, saturation and micropitch.

i am in no way a pro but ive been seriously trying for many many years and these are a few things i really like: I use thermal a whole lot....its just one of those plugins thats fun to use..super powerful and has its own sound. i havent dug deeper than tweaking presets but i know its capable of a whole lot. if you need a real fast and dirty way to make a track sound solid camel crusher on subtle master preset with minor mix/volume/resonance tweaks gives one of the most solid boosts to a mix of anything ive ever used and its free. seriously its like magic. i love master plan (artic would probably be similar but i havent tried it) if im having a hard time getting my sound right i just shut everything off and toss in on and it at least helps my brain get back to basics and rough in an idea easier than tweaking 50 boxs or modules chasing my tail. also it sounds incredible. way better than L2 if you dont know what youre doing and how to set it for each track i can get a way better sound out of master plan than a chain of boxs i dont fully understand

In my area most of the music studios are only seeking mix engineers or interns for mix engineering which I did. None want a producer. A lot of singers in this area also aren't too serious, it's more of a hobby rather than career. I'd love some insight from you, since it seems you've managed to make the dream into a successful (and possibly profitable)career.

iZotope RX has a nice interface, but the quality of Rip-n-Mix (or however they spell it) is quite a bit better for most of the songs I tested.

I know this vid is old but I wanted to pass along to users of true:balance and Presonus Studio One an issue some might not be aware of. If you have true:balance active when trying to render or mixdown a track(s) and the track length is longer than about 3 minutes 9 seconds, Studio One will freeze. You need to make sure true:balance is not active when rendering or mixing down. This is a bug that Sonnible is aware of and something that took me awhile to figure out.

In my experience Nuostems has a cleaner sounding algorithm for stem extraction than RX10. Particularly for what you are using it for - removing a vocal.
It is running the Demucs algo under the hood and the v3 option gives the best result.

Have you ever taken a look at oxford drum gate? I find it delivers af much more natural sound for gating drums than Smart:gate (Having tried both, as well as that black salt plugin, which was the worst sounding of the three IMO)
Of course ODG is a lot more narrow in scope than smart gate, but I do think it does that one thing a lot better.

You should review the new Michelangelo EQ from Tone Projects. It emulates the orginal unit as well as including modern plug in features like dyanmic eq, auto gain, transient and body control... Look really good and would love a video from you about it!!

Hey Wytse & community, just want to ask if there is a way in the arrangement state to avoid spills like in your given example?
My favorite goto plugin from Melda is the Freeform EQ, because it can be adjusted sooop microscopic, that I sometimes even neglect the FabFilter Plugs.

I've always found that (apart from using the right mike and placing it correct) that the room acoustics are a huge factor. The most issues I had with spill where from recordings in rooms that where too small and too reflective...

Would you use Pro Q3 and Split EQ on the same track? is it worth having both?

    • @legacysupplies3132
      @legacysupplies3132 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They do different things. Q3 is his go to Eq, Split Eq he uses for special treatment like eqing the transient of a kick without affecting the tone, for example. So yes their might be times that you would use them both on same track doing different jobs.

Cool, if it isn't a list that solves everything i find quite finicky in a practical automatic way! I just picked up the free Ozone EQ which has the transient/sustain options.
I do graph analysis with mEQ but that's very fiddly. If anything can do quick analysis via file upload that would be amazing. Sounds like the average function is pretty useful too, is that a range or standard deviation around it? That's important too.
I agree with not overusing that, it gives an idea of what and where might be wrong, maybe a harsh frequency, maybe tells you to try less sub etc. Removing 2.5k resonances a lot used to be a thing but all the references for loud guitar seemed to have those louder so now i don't worry about that. Good for sub when monitors suck too! But the moves you make to it are with ears, no reference track is an average and that will vary hence thing if you make an analysis its important to know how far things go. I basically have some jpeg screenshots of various "styles" or make one of a track/album i can call up and over lay if a track is more inbetween a few things -very clunky way of doing it 100 not recommended haha.

Favorite newly discovered compressor is the SPL Iron. I've kinda switched over to it from the Fairchild stuff, especially for vocals. I just love how thick it makes things sound. I've found a use for it on everything, but it's my go-to for vocal and bass compression.

About smart limit. I was using it about a half year. And IMO its strange. Without comparisons with others its ok. Im habit with this sound. But. Its do something that makes overall sound boring. Its like making the hi mid deep out of my speakers. Now Im quit and switch to invisible limiter.
