- Panasonic Leica 100-400mm Photography Review VS Panasonic 100-300
Lets do something different! Lets focus on photography with the Amazing Panasonic 100-400 F4-6.3 telephoto lens. Also this review is also about the Panasonic 100-300 which I also like and used on many holidays.
So we compare the 2 lenses in a non pixel peep way. And I show alot of photo examples. Shot on GH5 and GH3.

Just wow... those shots of the 100-300 were absolutely stunning. Picking up mine tomorrow and this got me more excited!
As soon as the 100-400 photos were displayed I felt that there was a noticeable difference in colour, contrast and clarity. Impressive.
Excellent, useful comments. Thank you, Victor,
Some really nice pictures you got there, well done :)
Nice! Beautiful pictures and good review!
This was helpful, thanks. Think I'm going to have to go for the 400mm now. The colours seem a lot richer
Thanks for a very useful comparison, looks like I will be saving up some more......
Thank you very much for your video. Your explanation is very clear. Xavier, France
Great review, thanks!
Thanks for the video review. I have both the Panasonic 100-300mm II and the Panasonic 100-400mm. I use a G7 and G9. I get some nice bird photos.
Aside from the range, is the value there for the 100-400 over the version ii of the 100-300 or should I save the money and go with the 1-3?
Thanks man. I was undecided between the two of these lenses, but I think this video decided it for me. The extra reach and sharpness are important to me, and I can (just about) afford the 100-400mm, so that's what I'll go for. Thanks!
Thank you Victor. Good information
For the same price you can get Nikon P1000 125x zoom with RAW (great pics)... I like your reviews, very informative, with a touch of dry sense of humor.
Good vid - thanks!
Your are great. Greetings from Germany
Dude your funny.I love how you down play your skill level as a photographer.Badass!👍
Beautiful photos Victor. :)
Thanks! I blame the lenses! :)
Haha. I mainly shoot video, but like to do stills as well.
I own this lens. Worth the price. Build quality is very good. It is a beast! And the range! However the zoom ring is not smooth for video.
I now own both and as much as i enjoy the 100-400 i don't know if i really needed it.
I think my 100-300 is so sharp that i don't really notice a huge difference between the images.
There is a weight difference that does tell on a long day.
The 100-400 is better but most of the time if 300 isn't enough reach then 400 isn't really either. But yeah when 400 with a crop only just cuts it then you got an image you wouldn't otherwise have been happy with.
I use both at different times but i could totally get by with the 300.
Are you going to keep the 100-300mm and sell the 100-400mm?
I have had both. The 100-400 is clearly a step up in IQ. It is much better built. Better reach. osts twice as much or a little more. It is one step up over the 100-300 and 1/2 a notch below the 300 mm F4 oly when it comes to sharpness. So if you want better IQ in a zoom it would have costed 3000 euro or so. The 100-300 I found is decent like you say.The Oly could wel l be worth if for those who are more demanding than you (and I) are.
thanks
it clearly is worth it for you : very nice pictures in the wild .
I personnally have the recent updated version of the 100-300 currently on a G85 . It has dual is 2 and weather resistance unlike yours. More than about budget, this combo is meant to be powerfull but still light to carry around for general purpose . I have found that the 200-300mm range is more usefull than expected but rarely miss the extra reach to 400mm of a specialty lens that could stay home when i don't expect to use it . It's nice to have that choice.
the 100 - 400 is just way too much $$$ and the 100 - 300 mm is plenty of zoom for most people
You answered your own question at about the 2 minute mark, birds high in a tree the 300mm will not reach for you. Only you now about your financial situation. But nice review.
Often 800 won't reach either.
I use 1200mm on my nikon to reach most birds.
You can get by with 600 or 800 but you'll have to crop usually with both.
How are you carrying this lens? I just got it yesterday and am curious about my camera strap set up and if I should attach the strap to the lens tripod mount or the regular attachment points? I am concerned about putting stress on the lens mounts
This lens is truly amazing hand-held. Even for video. Absolutely beautiful build quality. Mine has been through hell - pouring tropical rain on my G9. It still works fine.
Ps panasonic has both 1.4x & 2x tele con for the 400 mm lens
no they dont , they only fit the 50-200 and 200mm
Haha...man are you Dutch or what? Hilarious.
Do you still use the GH5?.
Yes love the camera!
The 100-300 DOES have weather sealing. Thanks that is all :)
not mark 1 which victor has
with the 100-300 now being weather proof and better focus... not anymore worth it I think
have just ordered the new 100-300mm myself (although I wish I'd had the extra £££ for the Leica lol)
400mm is not enough reach for small birds???????????
It is and it isn't.
I find at 1200mm I can fill the frame enough to get a decent shot. Even then you sometimes need to crop.
Skittish birds far away like lapwings are hard to get even at 1200 with a big crop.
They have a habit of staying just that bit too far away from humans 😀
600 is usually enough with a bit of cropping I find but obviously with the 800 you don't need to crop so much.
@@letni9506 Maybe time to study wildlife?
@@letni9506 A lapwing is not a skittish bird btw....
@@letni9506 You can fill the frame enough at 1200mm??? Your skills as a videographer/photographer might be awesome..... As a nature observer/photographer you suck....
