Panasonic 100-300mm II lens review

  • Here's a look at the Panasonic Lumix telephoto lens with a reach of 100-300 which is 200-600 equivalent on a full frame sensor. This little guy is incredible at only 5 inches in length making it small enough to take on most shoots.
    I use this lens on my GH5 and in this video you'll get to see it in use at a major sporting event.

    I am on my second of these lenses having had the Mk 1 version too. To improve manual focus get a long chunky tie wrap, I use a black one to colour merge. Fasten it around the manual focus ring tightly, then cut off everything except for a couple of centimeteres. Now use the tie wrap end to focus, you will be amazed how smooth the focus is now, with just that little bit of extra torque.

      Hi Paul I have just bought the mki 100/300mm so was wondering if you had any tips. Im using it on my Olympus 5mkiii

    • @paulmcwilliams8641
      @paulmcwilliams8641 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@georgecollings8603 I have found a new use for a tie wrap on mine. I cut a short length of plastic pipe, mine is 22mm diameter, then cut a slot in it in the middle, so I could attach it with a tie wrap it onto the lens hood. Place it at about ten o clock looking at it from the viewfinder end. Place your camera on a tripod then point it at an object 30 - 50 metres away looking through the viewfinder with your right eye. Keeping your head in place look through the pipe and move it up and down so it lines up with the same object with your left eye..
      You now have a easy to use target acquisition aid. I find my subject in this then switch on the camera and lo and behold the thing appears straight away in the viewfinder. You will find that the distance difference creates a bit of parallax error, so if it is further than the calibration target you will find it lines up at the bottom of the pipe, closer and it's the top of the pipe.
      I find I need to keep mine at a shutter speed of 800ths of a second to avoid lens shake blur, but this is easily obtainable. Modern software can do wonders with noise reduction.
      I think my Mk 1 version was a bit sharper than the Mk 2.

      Hi Paul what would would say was the drop off point before sharpness started to fall off.

    • @paulmcwilliams8641
      @paulmcwilliams8641 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@georgecollings8603 I never analysed it that much. I would take as many shots as I could when possible and compare each one and keep the best. I tried f8, but could not see any worthwhile improvement in perceived sharpness. I bought a tripod foot from a German company and use a handle in that, so I can wedge my left elbow into my chest and control my breathing. I use the same system with my Sony 200 - 600 A7iv combo, see link. It will show you the pipe thingy too. th-cam.com/video/9M3F2oaje0o/w-d-xo.html

    How do you solve the jitter problem on your GH5? I work with the GH5 with the 100-300 for shooting wildlife, but whatever stabilization mode, or stab. combi modes i use, there is no smooth panning or animal- following. I saw jitter in your video too. Have you found a way to solve this?

    • @paulmcwilliams8641
      @paulmcwilliams8641 ปีที่แล้ว

      Switch the stabilisation off completely when using it with a gimbal or fluid head. The only jitter you will get then is created by yourself.

      Turn off IS lock on your GH5 and just shoot in dual IS. The image will sway more, but panning should be smooth

    I just received this lens and loving it so far. Do you use ND, polarizer, or other filters with this lends and in what settings? I usually at least get the very basic almost imperceptive protective filter. Thanks for ideas and the recommendation of this lens. For my budget as a hobby photographer, this lens is great and already getting shots I've never been able in the past at a distance and semi-macro. Thanks.

    Hello - prices of lenses for my micro 4/3 Lumix G80/85 makes me cry. Very pricy. Is it very justified to have Lumix G80 with Lumix 100-300mm II lens or it will be good enough to have compact 1 inch sensor Lumix Fz1000mkII or Lumix Fz2500 ? What are the pros of having micro 4/3 system in this situation ? Why exactly these lenses are so expensive ? How they are different from this mechanics in 1 inches superzoom compacts ?
    I shoot mostly birds. I don't do portraits because I don't have people to do this.

      I am a professional nature photographer, and get very, very good images with it. However, you have to adjust the sharpness option in the GH5 colour settings menu. I have raised it from (standard) 0 to +5. It's a kind of unsharp masking, but when set to 5, i get very crispy images.
