      @@mattisulanto -- It's good to be reminded that M43 is an industry standard supported by a number of manufacturers, and there are great products from big names like Panasonic and Olympus which interoperate (as well as smaller manufacturers) -- that shows that there are more options out there for the M43 photographer. I own a G85 and a handful of Panasonic M43 lenses, but if I come across a good deal on an Olympus M43 lens which fills in a need or function that I do not already have, it's a great thing to know that such a lens would work fine on my camera. Or -- there are some very nice Olympus M43 cameras with some features that I do not have in my G85 -- and if I have an opportunity to get one of those cameras at a great price, I know that it should work great with my existing Panasonic lenses. Plus it's fun to see you guys have to interact totally in English when I am sure that it would be easier for you in Finnish! Thanks!!!

    My wife and I do a lot of still and video work for a living, using a mix of Lumix and Olympus gear. Speaking about still photography, I feel people in our situation are a bit forgotten about with compatibility. My wife prefers to use Lumix bodies because she is more familiar with the UI, I believe my E-M1iii is the best camera ever made. We swap lenses all the time. I know both Lumix and Olympus have very good software development teams, so why aren't they communicating enough to make the IS, aperture control, focus stacking etc fully compatible? I know it's expensive to develop and arrange transfer of protocol, but why not make paid firmware updates to allow more compatibility? People are now used to paying for software, and it would increase the enjoyment out of shooting m43. I hope Lumix and Olympus can work something beneficial out. My Olympus camera has Lumix lenses on it as often as my wife's Lumix has Olympus lenses.

    The LUMIX lens also comes with a larger, good quality lens hood, similar to the Olympus although I rarely use it on mine, the shorter pull out one is convenient and keeps the kit compact. And thanks, I always enjoy watching you two, as a double act or alone. I have been using the PL 100-400 on my G9 for quite a while and am happy with it. I also tried it on. EM1-ii body and it also worked perfectly fine, I just couldn’t get used to the ergonomics and controls of that camera but it performed well with the PL lens.

The compatibility question sprang to my mind immediately on watching another clip by you and Peter where you investigated the differences between the two lenses on their manufacturer's bodies. It was so funny, I am subscribed to both channels yours and Peter’s and I saw both of you in two new videos. After watching both, I love the idea of cross testing! Honestly, PanaLeica set of zooms could be a solo reason to get G9 ;) Excellent set even 100-400 which is way longer than I can use ;) all makes a practically a perfect system. 100-400 from Olympus is not a true PRO lens and lack of Sync IS is a hint what they have something coming in they PRO line ;) Nevertheless this new one should be a worth to consider for people who do not to break a bank for long reach. BTW, I love one of your early comparison between PanaLeica 50-200 and 100-400. Personally, 200mm is a longest what I may wish in m43 for myself.

    I really like that Olympus version. It is absurd that Panasonic designed a lens that could not work with teleconverters. With teleconverters the Olympus becomes the best macro lens in MFT because it allows good distance (1.3 meters) between camera and subject while going over 1:1 magnification. I think it gets to around 1,1x or 1.2x, somewhere in that range. The further away the camera is shading is no longer an issue, and small creatures tend to stay put instead of trying to hide from a close photographer. Telecoverters can also extend this lens’s reach out to 1600mm full frame equivalent which can be usefully long, for distant animals and the moon.

    • @fredio54
      @fredio54 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That does sound attractive - I have the Laowa 2x macro and using it freehand is nearly impossible even with IBIS :-D Depth of field is about 0.1mm so you have to be ultra steady. Really tripod or jig only stuff. However for everything else, seems like the Panasonic wins.

    Thanks Peter and Matti! I watched both of your videos. Very informative for an enthusiast user! I have an Olympus E-M5ii and I got the Panasonic 100-400 mm new for 920 euro when I lived in France last summer, which I viewed as a very good deal. (I bought it through a French online electronics store that ships from Hong Kong.) I have used it a lot, and the image quality is excellent. The auto-focus and stabilization in the lens works well for my use. The result depends more on the person behind the camera than which of these lenses you choose!

    I am very tempted by the converter option on the Olympus although I have Panasonic body. Getting close to 1200mm is very important for my photography. Size difference is not so big to represent a problem. My concern, and I am sorry to point this out, is the trust in Olympus after their decision to sell the imaging division. After all it costs some money and I do not feel confident to spend it on a company that has retired. Maybe I am exaggerating but this feeling doesn't confort me

    After working with the G9 and the Panasonic-Leica100-400mm lens, I appreciate this combination. The stabilization is amazing. Auto focus is fast, though not hybrid.
    The system has limitations but great advantages, too. It is difficult to imagine another system as portable and small as this system. I admire the Olympus brand, too. I would purchase that brand for the same or similar reasons I purchased the Panasonic. I've owned and used Olympic lenses.
    I might buy a full-frame for certain uses but am deterred by weight and cost. After 70 years old, weight becomes a bigger issue. The more I master the G9, the better the results.

I appreciate your approach to give a really fair and unbiased comparison of Olympus and Panasonic lenses, in the light of you originally siding with your corresponding brands.... Nevertheless the bottomline both of you offered in both videos to preferably combine lens and body of the same make, but if not available, other combinations work almost as good, is very reasonable and is also my opinion. Both lenses are fantastic. The Panasonic seems to give up a tiny amount of sharpness at the long end to have it 2/3 of a stop brighter, smaller and lighter. The Olympus seems more rugged, but the controls rotating with the tripod collar are nice on the Panasonic. I'm just looking at dabbling at telephoto shots, so I'm probably getting the even smaller, even lighter and a touch less sharp 100-300 to pair with my E-M1ii and my girlfriend's G7.

    Two nice videos of the same. For the first time I would buy the Panasonic lens instead of Olympus. Reason: portability, smaller, lighter.
    In future:
    can Peter be your co-moderator, because he has no longer work while Olympus is giving up?
    Pana wins the battle of MFT and so I invested in the wrong company. But: I like Oly and will stay with it. The equipment/system is good and it will not be bad because of the end of Olympus.
    Why don`t Pana buy Olympus?

      There is a slightly hacky video from "asia" showing that that isn't the case, however the IBIS is tuned for the non-multiplied values and EXIF is also non-multiplied. Also, you need to be above 200mm to use it, which somewhat makes sense anyway. Reducing toward 100 will cause the extender and back element to collide.

    I have 2 remarks: German Fotomagazin provides an optical test of the two lenses in the brandnew magazine 9/2020. There the optical performance of the Olympus is a little bit higher, especially at 400mm
    Second: why nobody of the Olympus affiliates referes to the point, that the Olympus optical design is obviously identlcal to the sigma 100-400 DG HSM from 2017? That would be a good reason why this lens is bigger and heavier, because there there is a fullframe design build into a new body...

    There is a badly documented feature when using an Olympus back with a Lumix lens that has an OIS switch - Turn the lens' OIS switch ON. In the menu turn "Use Lens IS" OFF. The system now uses part and part lens and body stabilisation. You can hear both sets of motors whirring. This is neither Synch-IS nor Dual-IS however it does carry an Olympus patent-pending. It does not work with Lumix stabilised lenses that do not have an OIS switch, the camera will merely swap from lens to body in the menu. With Dual-IS (or Dual2) or Synch-IS the lens and body 'talk' to each other. With this Olympus "Dual Stabilisation" they do not but do run independently, to some extent (the whirr from the back is not as enthusiastic).
    I have tried this with the E-M5ii, and PEN-F, it is better than using one or the other with a long lens but not as good as Lumix Dual-IS on the G9. Note long lenses, the IBIS alone is better with short ones. The longest lenses may be better with just the Lens-IS, which is where the G9 hits the spot with its integrated Dual2. I do not have an Olympus Pro lens to test the E-M5ii Synch-IS. I'm not sure it does anything with the 3-axes E-PL7 but operating the lens switch with "Use Lens IS" OFF does do something, it certainly turns the OIS on when the back has it switched off in the menu.
    That Olympus backs can use Lumix Lens-IS tells me that Olympus do understand the Lumix OIS and could implement some form of Synch-IS with them, but chose not to. So much for compatible lens systems.
    Some discussion here www.mu-43.com/threads/olympus-sync-is-and-%E2%80%98olympus-dual-is%E2%80%99-patent-pending.109060/

    I use both Olympus and Panasonic / Lumix - EM1 ii and G9 camera with a variety of lenses from both manufacturers. I have had the 100 - 400m Panasonic / Leica lens for several years as there was no other option at the time. This lens suffers from an extremely bad stiff and jerky zoom action which is far worse in hot countries. When I was in the Gambia with Chris Packham shooting birds the zoom action was so stiff I could barely turn the zoom ring at times. In addition the sharpness of the image with this lens is not great at 400mm full extension for a long distance shot. The maximum zoom I could use was 350mm in these circumstances. At the moment my 300mm pro Olympus lens with the x1.4 teleconverter out performs the Panasonic / Leica lens in all aspects - maybe on par with stabilisation ?? Having said this I have not bought or used the Olympus 100 - 400mm lens as I have been saving money pending the release of the Olympus 150 - 400mm with built in x1.2 teleconverter. I have the x1.4 and x2.0 Olympus teleconverters and hope that the 150 - 400mm pro lens together with the x1.4 teleconverter giving me a range in the order of 260 - 700mm will produce a sharp image (Given the issues of haze and air movement for a long distance shot) As well as obtaining reasonable stability at the maximum focal length. Great video clip guys.

It's a good thing to have options, and you and Peter are very good in showing it with your mutual respect and humor. I have to say that I, if I needed it, would actually have a very close look at the Panasonic 100-400mm, even to pair it with an Olympus body. Sometimes this could be the right option. (I'm actually using the old, out of production 14-45mm kit zoom lens from Panasonic on my Olympus Pen F - they match quite nicely.)

    One thing to note. High speed 60fps ProCapture works with the E-M1ii body and Panasonic lens but the low speed ProCapture does not.

      @@MrHasherd I'm guessing... I think the focus between the Olympus and the Panasonic lens isn't fast enough to give reliable results with the lower speed ProCapture. The faster ProCapture focuses and meters then goes and takes many many shots at those settings. The lower speed tries to focus in between shots. Whether that is a problem depends on your application. I'd prefer the low speed, but can get by with high. I haven't tried different low speed settings to see if it works at other rates.

    I'm watching this only from a phone but at 10:22 there seems to be problems controlling CA. If it looks like that on a small screen I'm wondering how bad it is on a large print or at high res on a big screen? 🤔

      @@mattisulanto Well, now when I checked that photo from two larger displays it actually looked better 😂. There seems to be some small amount of color fringing, but no more than is typical in this class. I think that the main culprit for my earlier observation was my phone screen's pixel structure.

    the wrong direction is for rangefinder leica cameras and a zoom pin/handle on the lens on a gx8 or leica body. your hand is not in front of the finder. I hear nothing about the f4 vs f5 this is in low light a big bonus for the lumix and with dual-is 1.5 stop extra on a lumix body dual is-2

      We have to get back to that later, because we didn't have time to thoroughly test that. We did some simple tests, but not enough to conclude anything.

    Hi, On youtube I'v seen where 2 different pro photographers had moved from the G9 with the Leica 100-400mm lens to an Olympus camera & an Olympus lens - one guy had the Oly 100-400 - in order to get sharper bird images. They both complained about getting more often than not softer distant bird / animal shots with the Pany set up - G9 & Leica 100-400 - but after switching to the Olympus gear their I Q percentage shot up into the 90 / 95% area. It would be incisive if you two ' Pro photographers ' could do a comparison - Pany sys. vs Oly sys. - with distant objects / birds ect. and compare the two. Thanks

      @mattisulanto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing. It's really difficult to test something like that, because there are always so many variables and neither of us is a bird photographer. However, it's something to think about for the future.
