    I know it is too late but maybe it helps you for future sewing projects: the inside of the dress does not need to be the fabric with the pattern, you can take an even cheaper fabric in white or the color which fits best. In that way you have more of the important fabric.

    • @rachelcookie321
      @rachelcookie321 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joyfuljaj it’s not that bad. They’re a bit heavy but it’s really not that much work to take them out and put them away. I only imagine it would be annoying if you’re like sewing everyday and need to take it out and put it away everyday. Awesome job Mia! A nice sewing tip for future is ruffles are best when they are twice the length of the finished product and if you do 2 basting stitches, one at 1/4 inch from the salvage edge and the other 1/4 inch in from the first line. That way when you pull both basting stitches (at the same time) it lays your gathers so you can sew the seam allowance right in the middle of the two gathers and your gathers then lay and fall straight out of the seam with no curls or turns. I always just leave the inner basting stitch in place and only pull out the one that shows outside the seam allowance as it adds added strength and keeps the garment from unraveling if you don't so a surges or enclosed seam.

  • @teaandme1136

    Hello Mia, a fellow seamstress here! For the first dress, there may be some parts where you would want to adjust the ruffles - just at the front right side is tucked up a little, making a short v shape at the bottom and just round the back its a little long, but your other dresses are equal! They're charming! If you did want to put something on the front skirt to torse line, a nice flower lace or pain white ribbon or just something would look super cute to follow to the bow at the back. Obviously, these are your dresses, and my opinion, doesn't have to count xD

    About the darts: start from the biggest part and sew towards the point, and then sew off the fabric and do not backstitch. Leave some thread and make knots by hand to secure :) It believe her channel is pronounced paper stars! I made a dress from another one of her videos and its one of my favorites!!

    Mia, you are super talented at sewing!! I've been sewing for over 30 years. My one suggestion is to keep your iron handy, ironing as you go. It will make your final result look so much cleaner!!❤️❤️

  • @sagitteaius
    @sagitteaius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    The way I learned to make a dart in fashion school is to mark the point of the dart with fashion chalk or washable marker! You can stick a pin through your pattern paper and fabric and use the pin as your guide for where the dart is! If you're really new or just anxious about sewing, you can also draw the lines of the dart onto the fabric! :) Never ever everrr backstitch at the point of the dart, but rather take the ends of the thread and knot them twice. :) While backstitching is recommended on nearly all other parts of garment construction, the strenght of it can make too harsh of a dart end, and you want a dart end to faded away into the fabric. :)
    Congrats on the dresses! It made me so happy to see you so happy sewing. 😆 Cutting the fabric truly takes an unexpected amount of time.🤪

    I love that you are a self taught seamstress! Fabric has a right side and the back is called the wrong side. Secret to sewing, iron as you go. Like make your straps, iron them. Sew a seam, iron your seams open- anyways you get it!! When I make a ruffle I mark some spots with sewing clips or pins. So half way and then quarter way, that way when you gather the ruffles it's easier to make them even by sections. Love❤ the label 🏷 idea too.

    To go along with the "everyone told me not to do this but I did it anyway". I decided to use wooden flowers for my wedding. I ordered all the flowers pre-dyed and assembled them into bouquets and centerpieces myself. Saved hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Aaaand my wedding was during covid so we were able to do a tiny wedding with like 10 people and use the same flowers over a year later when our reception finally happened. I got tons of compliments on the bouquets too :) don't listen to the haters lol

      I love that!!! As a florist for weddings, I’ve been wanting to do a wedding with the wooden flowers for years!!! It’s such a cool idea I’m so glad you didn’t listen to the haters, those flowers are guaranteed to be a momento to your wedding forever and I personally think that’s so much better and cheaper than saving the flowers and getting them dried, they’re already forever preserved that way 😄

    Mia, first off EXCELLENT JOB! Love the square necklines, pickets, and THE BOWS!
    2nd, for your wedding you should get a live artist to come and paint a scene (like the first dance, or everyone standing at the alter…)!
    I just saw some shorts from a lady who does these sorts of paintings and they are INCREDIBLE! And it’s such a truly unique keepsake and so much more powerful than just a photo. I don’t remember the artist’s name off the top of my head. I’ll tag or link my favorite of her videos below if I can find her again. Though I’m sure there are a ton of artists in Canada who would love to do this. Plus you can support a local artist!

    On the day, give the ladies cups! (Similar to what you find in swimsuits, but more sturdy) You can buy them from your local fabric store and it will just make them feel confident in their bust shape with the dress, without a bra! Hand stitch them in on the corners, they are kinda triangle shape

    Tip for darts: Mark 2cm above from the end and sew down until that point and continue till the end of the dart but REALLY close to the edge of the fabric. At the end don’t sew backwards just continue sewing and the thread will wrap itself. This way you get a really nice end. And don’t forget to press from the outside to get a perfect shape.

    If you want to do a dart "correctly" start from the edge of the fabric (backstitch this bit) and sew up to the point of the dart.
    Continue sewing off the end of the dart. DO NOT backstitch!!
    Then untwist any stitches that have gone just past the dart, then tie the two ends of the string into a knot.
    Press like your life depends on it.
    Done. Perfect darts :)

  • @hollybeasley2872
    @hollybeasley2872 2 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    When your sewing the dart the easiest way is to sew from the largest part downwards so you can sew to the point until you run off your machine! that way it keeps it really flat at the bottom and doesn’t give it any kind of weird flare. love the video as a fashion student !

    These are SO cute! I do think on the first one (Mia is wearing it at the end) the ruffle on the bottom got 'caught' at one part - it caught a bit of the skirt fabric and because of this is raised up. An easy fix though, just stitch rip that one area (it's only like an inch) and re-sew!

    I sew, myself, so I KNOW how much work and love went into making these dresses! How many brides can say they CREATED their bridesmaids' dresses? Very, very few, I'm sure. You and your Mom can be SO PROUD of these beautiful dresses you lovingly crafted! I am very proud of you, for learning to sew. This skill will come in very handy, as you become a wife, and have children of your own. I used to sew my sons' Halloween costumes, and I can picture you doing that, too, for your kids. I've sewn curtains for my house, and I'm sure you will do the same. It's AWESOME to see you enjoying this new talent that you have, and I am smiling right along with you, as you see your creation! Congratulations on sewing your bridesmaids' dresses! You have truly made your wedding a one-of-a-kind occasion!!!! I can't WAIT to see videos from your special day! Great job, Mia!!!!

    I love that you made them and that your bridesmaids don’t have to go out of their way to purchase a dress you chose. I think that’s a common frustration with weddings, bridesmaids dresses are expensive and you will never wear them again. Even the ones the bride claims “you can totally wear this again” will sit in the back of your closet gathering dust.

    I think some of the best tips I learned whilst beginning to sew, the things that took my garments to the NEXT LEVEL is to understitch and iron.
    If you search a video for understitching it’s pretty easy, it makes necklines and other seams like that much neater and so they don’t turn over!
    Ironing, especially with darts makes everything lay the way it should and look as neat as possible.
    Also with the darts, there are lots of really great videos on TH-cam I’ve watched to learn how to do darts very well, try out some different techniques to see what works best and IRON them throughout to make sure they are perfection!!!
    I love sewing Mia as I’ve always loved sewing and seeing her so excited about it makes me remember when I first started and how exciting making something yourself is 💗💗

    I love to see people picking up sewing! Mia you're doing amazing and this is such a good life skill! You even sewed on the straps in a square! That's a really good technique that makes it way more durable. Also thrifting fabric is cheap, amazing and sustainable! I love when I find curtains or bedsheets (sometimes even lace)If you want extra tips, here are some, if not, take my praise and keep scrolling!
    pre wash your fabric, this will soften the fabric a little, and make you aware of shrinking, colour washout etc. As well as avoiding any changes in the shape/drape/fall of the fabric after sewing.
    If you're worried about having fabric enough, make the top/front layer of your pockets out of a complimentary fabric scrap, for this pattern anything white would have been good, because the way it is inserted someone would have had to be holding the pocket open for anyone to see.
    Anyways gorgeous sewing!
