Inside China's Future Factory

  • Over the past 40 years, the fishing village of Shenzhen has been reborn as a futuristic metropolis bursting with factories. Bloomberg Businessweek's Ashlee Vance travels to the heart of China's tech revolution to witness this new reality firsthand, as part of a three-episode exploration of the city. In part one of Hello World Shenzhen, Vance gets a worker's view of life in a startup and then explores one of the city's famous electronics markets to learn how people survive (and in some cases make fortunes) in such a frenetic, competitive environment.

As a foreigner living in Shenzhen it's actually astonishing how this impressive city is not yet commonly known outside of China... There surely are downsides to living in this city, but it really feels like the future here.

I only heard about this city a year or so ago. But now I bring it up regularly with people when I speak about how fast China is advancing and how the UK is falling so far behind and literally crumbling apart! That fact that this place was only a small fishing town with a few tens of thousands of people to what it has become today, in such a short period, is just amazing to me! I would move there in an instant given the chance!

During the Spring of 1979, I was studying Chinese language. The professor came in one day and announced to the class (a beginning class) that China was soon to be undergoing major economic reforms and that several American companies had approached the Chinese Department for language experts to assist them in setting up business in this new Chinese economic zone. The zone didn't even have a name yet. I mentioned this to several self-proclaimed China experts (lawyers and law professors), and even they didn't believe it possible. They thought it was a joke or that I misunderstood the professor. If they could only see Shenzhen today. Amazing. A great success. That professor had great inside information on an economic miracle about to transform the world.

I studied 6 years ago in HK and used to visit Shenzhen. It is used to be the city of cheap tech but bad quality. 4 years ago I had a job in retailing industry and we used to import a lot of Cell phones from Shenzhen, tons of goods coming down to HK from Tech city and a lot of potential clients. Now I'm happy to see that this city is alredy a power hub for Tech Industry not just in Asia also in the entire world. I had the honor of watching how this city evolved so much from outside China in just a few years .

Just like every megacity of America, the real estate price per square meter in Shenzhen rises to 50000-70000 yuan generally. I still remember the price was 4000 yuan per square meter in 2002. Basically speaking, a megacity is a huge real estate monster, leading to huge income disparity and causing social instability. The working class all over the world should stick together to reform or revolutionize this capitalist system.
