    As an Oregon fan - i was terrified every time this guy got the ball. Nix isn't anywhere close imo. I think teams are going to regret passing on Pennix big time, and one team is going to be stoked.

    I’ve seen so many QB prospects that don’t have what Penix has downfield and fail, and I don’t understand why so many teams can nitpick a prospect who has exactly those things in spades as their greatest strength.

    His ability to read the defender’s body in coverage in real time and place the ball away from danger is the best I’ve ever seen in college football. He’ll drop it right over their shoulder or by the ear hole or behind a defender before they even realize what’s happening.

    Even though Michigan only had 1 sack he was under pressure all night and wasn't able to sit back and pick the secondary apart like he did vs Texas. He missed alot of open passes he usually makes . I think he was rattled by the pressure . Dude was deadly in the screen game though

    A lot of Penix's throws are about timing. Against Michigan, the defensive players were holding UW receivers 10 yards down field to the point the neutral announcers starting complaining about a lack of defensive holding calls (yes, if you were listening to the announcers). Thnx SEC refs. It is like playing a basketball where the refs aren't calling obvious fouls, because they aren't hard enough. I guess in your league you can grab a receiver 10 yards down field, not in the former pac 12...

    I think people are not picking his bad aggressive throws. Those could just as easily have been completions if not for some good defensive plays. He went injury free when he stopped trying to be a running quarterback. He’ll be fine in the pocket or sprinting out.

  • @DoTheAstralPlane
    @DoTheAstralPlane 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Penix is easily the biggest boom/bust prospect of the QB class imo. He's got a real arm, he can sling it if given time. Problem is, his play under pressure is just way too inconsistent to perform at the NFL level, and Washington's protection was amazing all year which allowed those deep routes to develop and Penix could safely sling it (besides the Natty, and lo and behold he had a bad game). He's also throwing to a top 16 pick and another potential 1st-2nd rounder (Odunze and Polk). His tape against Arizona State pretty much encapsulates everything that worries me: bad out of structure, limited pocket mobility, and weird mechanics that leads to some turnovers (no it's not because he's a lefty, I've seen mirroed tape). I just don't think this kind of a player could thrive as a top 16 pick because then he'd likely be going to a team with a less than ideal OL. In general, players that can only thrive in structure rarely make it in today's NFL unless they land in the ideal landing spot later in the draft. I hope he's a 3rd rounder going somewhere he can compete to start behind a good OL, but on a team like the Giants, he's toast. I think he's probably gonna be a guy fans like more than NFL scouts do.

    Two torn ACL's and 6 years in college. Hendon Hooker had one torn ACL and 5 years in college + redshirt year and went in the 3rd round. Plus Penix has a terrible throwing motion. And he's a lefthander.

      Penix is a much better passer though

    • @DoTheAstralPlane
      @DoTheAstralPlane 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Being a lefty really doesn't matter for shit imo, but otherwise I agree. I see a 3rd rounder in him, he's a great 3rd rounder with good upside, but ideally he goes somewhere like to the Rams where he can sit behind Stafford on a good offense with good scheme, and inherit the job after Stafford retires.

    Has more of a baseball release which tends to make the ball fly low which NFL defensive backs will defend far better than college guys. Has a worrisome extensive injury history. Is left handed which will mean a change in offensive line play - not all dominant left tackles can simply transition to right tackle with equal success. Is certainly a first round talent but his draft ceiling is late first round and his floor is mid-second round due to injury evaluations.

    In the National Championship Penix crumbled under pass rush and big game pressure.
    He played bad but he also looked bad. Every injury he had he repeatedly made sure everyone knew about. He seemed to be making excuses on the field during the game! He didn’t sound impressive in the post game interview either.
    Also when I watched his highlight reel he had big plays but most were very open and he threw from a clean pocket.
    Time will tell.
    For me he seemed immature and not that bright.

    • @rdmcabee
      @rdmcabee 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      NOt really. Michigan was allowed to hold UW receivers so much down field that even the announcers started pointing this out in the first half. Not saying UW was better, but if these SEC refs won't call downfield holds, then suddenly Penix can't throw to his guys. It did change the outcome. Same on Michigans first half runs. Tons of offensive holds, where guys can't get off of blocks, because Michigan players are grabbing the inside of the jersey around the neck area. Terrible reffing from the SEC crew changed the game.

    everyone conjuring up a negative narrative on Penix Jr after the National championship game reminds me of how people talked about Peyton manning vs Florida. If you look at Peyton Manning in his games vs the Gators as he was 0 and 4 vs the Gators he mostly overwhelmed. Pressure threw him off and was missing easy throws. The games you can view online.
    th-cam.com/video/fa4fkJr_NBA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RcLBweT9zsYmcsRk
    Be very careful making a narrative based on the end results of a small sample size while ignoring the body of work
    The moral of the story is he is NFL traits as a pocket passer. The ability to attack down field and navigate the pocket translates to the pros. A lot of hot takes after one game is not consistent with his identity. More importantly in his career he was absolutely money in pressure cooker situations. The Washington Pass catchers i felt are a bit overrated relative too the narrative that he has all these elite NFL wideouts to throw too. He isn't throwing to Jamar chase and Justin Jefferson Like Joe Burrow had. I would challenge that Texas pass catching group has more NFL starter talent that washington, more speed and size and play making ability. I would have agreed with the narrative that Penix Jr was being carried by his receiving group if we saw a bunch of highlight catches and diving catches... what i saw is long hand offs from 40 yards away and passes with ball placement you could only beat if you walked over and handed the ball to the receivers. I felt like AD Mitchell and X Worthy with the TE Sanders was a much more explosive diverse pass catching group with size.
    I have Micheal Penix Jr and C J Stroud as the two most underrated draft prospects in the last decade of drafting. The ability to win from the pocket with high level ball placement was the theme. Just like i can go back and find a high light real of Peyton Manning looking deeply impacted by pressure and over throws and mistakes and misses... it wasn't the 'THEME' of his college tape... just like it isn't he 'THEME' of Micheal Penix Jr's tape.
    I watched every snap of the top 8 QB's and a lot of ALL of all of them. I see Penix Jr having more NFL translatable traits. What Jordan Love and CJ Stroud excel at that is shocking everyone is the identical traits that Penix jr displayed.. willingness to pull the trigger... elite ball placement.. ability to navigate the pocket with eyes down field... That was the theme of his tape. Washington wasn't a elite power house. When Penix Jr joined that school they was ranked outside of the top 50. ... they simply didn't have the same type of horses at the line of scrimage to deal with a team like Michigan's physicality ..... similar story with Tennessee vs Florida with Peyton Manning was looking like a 4th rounder playing against that Gator team.

      Thanks for your take. Every film breakdown has Pennix as the best passer in college football. I think it's criminal that some draft experts and casual fans continue to place him outside the top 5 QB and mock him as a late first, early 2nd. Since you analyzed top 8, what are your rankings and what's your opinion of Daniels? He seems overrated to me.
