The most dominant tournament run in the history of the NCAAT. Won EVERY SINGLE GAME by double digits and made it look incredibly easy along the way. What a team that 2009 group was. The most dominant ACC team I've ever seen.
In many ways this team is the best I've ever seen at UNC. My brother and I have been watching the Heels for 40 yrs and at times during this game we were in awe. There were at least a few possessions where they were almost perfect, and it's true that Michigan (or any other team I can think of) really didn't stand a chance.
I am a KU fan and always knew when Roy left to his alma mater that he would win multiple titles because A.) He is probably the best head coach any top tier team could want. B.) Because the ACC is the best conference in the nation. I thought UNC would beat KU in 2008, but KU just played out of their minds, and UNC still managed to close the 28 point gap that Kansas scorched out to. 2009 was pure dominance. I have great respect for your program and can thank Dean smith for placing Roy at KU,
I remember watching this as a Tar Heel fan I was still nervous in the first half even as we absolutely blitzed them I feared a miraculous comeback by MSU.
6 NBA players on that team: Green, Ellington, Lawson, Hansbrough, Davis, Zeller. 7 if you count Larry Drew II, who only played a few games in the league. Deon Thompson is an all-star in Europe too. One of the most stacked teams ever.

LMAO You're out of your mind. Both conferences shit on the PAC12 and B1G. If they're so superior, how come neither conference has won a title since 2000? No, it's not because of these top guys going east, It's because the teams are always ass and lose before they even get to the Final Four to some lower seeded team. Every year the B1G puts in nearly 10 teams and 7 of them lose before the first 2 rounds are even over. If I was a top recruit out west, I wouldn't want to stay west past Kansas either and watch my draft stock plummets to nonexistent levels.

Too bad for MSU to have to play this NC team man. That team was amazing. Sparty would’ve had a good chance to win against anyone else. 2nd title keeps alluding Izzo. Maybe this is the season they win. Wayne Ellington!! Man he had a sweet stroke in college and still has one for the pistons
That's because they were beaten at halftime. The game was over. It was over actually before the game started. Michigan State couldn't live down that drubbing they took at the Pontiac Dome earlier in the season
Tyler Hansbrough carried this squad throught out the season and tournament. They are a powerhouse blue blood team.North Carolina had just won a title in the 2004-05 season so I wasn't surprised that the Tarheels won this one.And I don't like North Carolina but I have to respect thier basketball program that sent players to the NBA like Michael Jordan,Vince Carter, and Eric Montross.
I mean they had ty Lawson Danny green Wayne Ellington Tyler hansborough ed Davis Deon Thompson Larry drew and Tyler zeller..8 nba.players..5 legit nba rotation players
globalicon2012 lmao I grew up in New England and have always been a fan of UNC, ever think they wanted to play for one of the top 3 programs in the nation not only for the spotlight for a potential NBA career, and the fact they grew up fans of UNC🤔🙄
I think they played each other the first game of the season that year on the aircraft carrier if im not mistaken..and unc handled them then so this game was already in the bag
Wolverinefan, on paper this looks like the best team ever. Danny Green had the most wins in UNC history. Hansbrough had tons of records and he + Ellington were the highest scoring UNC duo ever. The 1/2-time score and lead in this game were the highest ever, and Lawson had a record number of steals. The '05 team played great through their last tournament, but for the whole 4 years (esp. bc so many jr's came back in 08) these guys get my nod for best ever. If they played, '09 gets my vote :).
@cschnei08. Lets not forget Florida had the one guy 9I think it was Humpries) who could make 3's from the parking lot and Corey Brewer--who could score the ball and could be the defensive stopper. It would be a good game indeed.
This was UNC most decisive title win. In all the 5 Championships that UNC has won there were very close games. 1957: I believe was 3 overtimes to decide. 1982: MJ game winning shot and Fred Brown's turnover. 1993: Webber's time out 2005: The game was tied in the final 2 minutes until Marvin Williams put back.

@iWilzon- cuz at the initial jump both Hansbrough and that MSU guy got tangled up, and a jump ball was called, and since no 1 had gained advantage yet, they jumped again
@XxBaTmAnFiGhTeRxX No the ball got tipped off like usual but Hansbrough and a MSU player both grabbed it and got tied up so they jumped again since nobody gained possession yet.
Quite possibly the best UNC team of all time, with 6 current players still going strong in the NBA... Ed Davis: Grizzlies Wayne Ellington: Cavilers Danny Green: Spurs Tyler Hansbrough: Pacers Ty Lawson: Nuggets Tyler Zeller: Cavilers

Highest Lead in each National Championship since 2009 2009 Carolina 24 points vs Michigan State W 2010 Duke 6 points vs Butler W 2011 UCONN 14 points vs Butler W 2012 Kentucky 16 points vs Kansas W 2013 Michigan 12 points vs Louisville L 2014 UCONN 15 points vs Kentucky W 2015 Duke 8 points vs Wisconsin W 2016 Villanova 10 points vs Carolina W 2017 Gonzaga 7 points vs Carolina L 2018 Villanova 22 points vs Michigan W 2019 Virginia 10 points vs Texas Tech W The top 2 teams imo in that period is North Carolina in 09 and Kentucky in 12. Both teams had Guards and Forwards who did their things but I think Carolina had too much depth inside with Hansborough, Thompson, and Davis for Anthony Davis to handle. Terrance Jones was an afterthought in their Championship Game too so I know he would've been one vs North Carolina.
@dgoss90 It was the 1989-1990 season, minor detail. I agree, UNLV was the best in the last 25 years. However, I think there were several teams better than '90 UNLV before 1985.
If everyone comes back, like they should I do believe next year they could be on par. What the current team lacks is the killer instinct that these guys had, this current Carolina team gets up 20 and then just kinda stops. In 09 they just constantly drove it down people's throats. Even if they some how pull it off this year everyone should stay imo, after last night Barnes proved he isnt ready for the NBA. Henson I think still needs more strength and Marshall needs to break more records :)
I am a Tar heel fan all the way, but I do give respect to Michigan State they seem good ever year. Cant say the same for Duke, just saying Duke makes me want to vomit! Also watching so many games over the years what we did in 08-09 really sticks out. They had to be the best team in many years, they were talented and didnt care who made the baskets just cared that they won. If you remember going into that game all the comentaters said MSU was going to win. Thays was crazy we won every game by 20.

2023 Amondo Bacot breaks all of Tyler Hansbrough unc basketball records. Amondo Bacot played in a championship game lost by 3 points to Kansas in 2022..time stamp
@tlight26berry Which is a remarkable record. Regardless how bad a team is...it seems like they would have beaten us at least once in those 25-27 or so years. Could you imagine building an arena in the early 80's and have your in-state rival (no matter who they are) BE UNDEFEATED THERE? It is a record that really shows the dominance of the Larry Brown/Roy Williams/and current Bill Self era at Kansas.
@chickenwings360- idk what your watching but UNC is a national champion contender, and a pre-season favorite by many to win it all. lol they got Harrison Barnes, who is only a soph but will prolly win NPO this year, they made the Elite 8 last yr, im pretty sure if you make it to the Elite 8 you don't suck haha
ed's a 4 year man and may very well win two titles before going to the NBA. his pop has cash from his pro career and has told him that the NBA is a grind, so enjoy time as a student. he;s not stinking it up IMO, just going through a bit of growing pains... he'll have a great college and pro career. thank god he didn't make the marvin williams one and done mistake :)
I'm rooting for the championship this year to be Louisville vs South Florida, because I'm a UConn fan and support all Big East teams (except for Syracuse). But realistically, I think it's going to be Marquette vs North Carolina.
what i'm trying to prove is that he is still going strong providing solid minutes whenever hes on the floor...hes not a superstar that's going to put the team on his back and you cant realize how valuable he is... theres a reason why hes the six man for the pacers...
villanova was a sleeper in that tourny, i had them going to the final four that year, with unc winning it all obviously bc of their monster lineup, but nova was a 3 seed. how do you call that overacheiving? is what uconn did last year overachieving? or how bout the butler team of the past two years? think those are flukes. i love the heels man, but give some love to my boys in philly. nova deserves respect, especially that year
As a ku undergraduate and unc graduate, I would have to say not true. UNC is godly i admit that, but KU has it's backbone. 07-08 jayhawks which won the national championship; which against 08-09 UNC would be a very good match up. Both teams are just way too balanced. Kansas is faster, overall better defense, north carolina is just all offense, which is why they are so hard to defeat. If juniors from KU came back for 08-09 season instead of going pro, unc may have not gone to title game.
Lol, as a KU fan I would hate to admit that, but yes you are most likely correct. Would depend which kansas team showed up that game though. The KU team that played against TCU at TCU or a struggling game against iowa state we would get our asses handed but not by alot maybe 12 point loss most. Now KU team that plays their A game like they did in the big 12 tournament would be a close match, but I would give the edge to louisville still, but only winning by like 1-2 points max.
@TheUNC23. Im a Duke fan and hate Carolina but I will be honest this is true. 2009 UNC was the best team throughout 2008-09 and on paper and romped their way to the Title. 2009-10 Duke wasn;t even most talented team in nation (UK, Kansas by far were) but just got hot at right time and beat who was on their Tourney bracket.
@doreme2100 I actually PREDICTED this national title game. Just because I thought Michigan State wanted to win it all in Detroit badly...people laughed that I had MSU in the final. I am a KU fan, and yep, they beat us in the sweet 16 (we lost 6 players to the NBA the year prior, and won the title). I had UNC taking by 15 over MSU in Detroit...not too bad. I should have been in a pool for money or something...lol
@WWEFaNOFKANE1997 lol. Kansas has a rather pathetic record vs. UNC. But we won an important meeting the last time! WVU is pretty up there and I would not call them mediocre. They are in the 2nd best conference and have made noise for a good amount of years now. They get very good talent and Huggins was in the Final Four in 2010! When he was coaching Kansas State, he ended the streak of Kansas beating them 27 or so straight times, it was KSU's first win at their new arena since it was built.
Total domination from start to finish! One of, if not the best team in tournament history!
Ill have to give it to ky with anthony davis msinly cause of anthony davis

ed's a 4 year man and may very well win two titles before going to the NBA. his pop has cash from his pro career and has told him that the NBA is a grind, so enjoy time as a student. he;s not stinking it up IMO, just going through a bit of growing pains... he'll have a great college and pro career. thank god he didn't make the marvin williams one and done mistake :)
I'm rooting for the championship this year to be Louisville vs South Florida, because I'm a UConn fan and support all Big East teams (except for Syracuse). But realistically, I think it's going to be Marquette vs North Carolina.
Total Domination
@mattcottom50 I agree! I loved UNC since 1975....
@ChainGangSoulja266 ANNNNNDDDDD winning EVERY game by at least 10 points, having 4 first round draft picks... the list goes on and on
we waxed everyone in this tournament..too easy
It’s never the wrong year to say Go Heels!
This might of been the most talented tarheel in unc history.
The most dominant of the unc titles
I'm a State fan and this UNC team was unbelievable. I assume you're toting for us to beat Duke Friday right? Lol
what i'm trying to prove is that he is still going strong providing solid minutes whenever hes on the floor...hes not a superstar that's going to put the team on his back and you cant realize how valuable he is... theres a reason why hes the six man for the pacers...
With Zeller already there, Henson coming in, and if Davis, Lawson, and Ellington had stayed, we would have won in 2010 as well.
buy this Final Four DVD from Amazon
villanova was a sleeper in that tourny, i had them going to the final four that year, with unc winning it all obviously bc of their monster lineup, but nova was a 3 seed. how do you call that overacheiving? is what uconn did last year overachieving? or how bout the butler team of the past two years? think those are flukes. i love the heels man, but give some love to my boys in philly. nova deserves respect, especially that year
anyone know where i could find the whole game?
As a ku undergraduate and unc graduate, I would have to say not true. UNC is godly i admit that, but KU has it's backbone. 07-08 jayhawks which won the national championship; which against 08-09 UNC would be a very good match up. Both teams are just way too balanced. Kansas is faster, overall better defense, north carolina is just all offense, which is why they are so hard to defeat. If juniors from KU came back for 08-09 season instead of going pro, unc may have not gone to title game.
@iWilzon what happend to msu here
@tweenerneener they didn't have them in the Big Ten/ACC challenge and beat MSU down with a bunch of freshman
2021 Baylor just did the same thing to Gonzaga. Nasty
@TheUNC23. Im a Duke fan and hate Carolina but I will be honest this is true. 2009 UNC was the best team throughout 2008-09 and on paper and romped their way to the Title. 2009-10 Duke wasn;t even most talented team in nation (UK, Kansas by far were) but just got hot at right time and beat who was on their Tourney bracket.
without question one of the Top 15 College Basketball Teams of all. this team would wash 08 Kansas by 30 it would be UNLV vs DUKE 90.
good quality
who’s here after Roy retiring 😭😭
what a good night to be a tar heel fan ill never forget this night
@JZ2001JC OK, but could they stop Lawson, Green, and Ellington? No way.
Damn.. forgot about this one lil bro..y'all got slaughtered...stunk the joint right up 😂😂😂
Roy's Masterpiece
@doreme2100 I actually PREDICTED this national title game. Just because I thought Michigan State wanted to win it all in Detroit badly...people laughed that I had MSU in the final. I am a KU fan, and yep, they beat us in the sweet 16 (we lost 6 players to the NBA the year prior, and won the title). I had UNC taking by 15 over MSU in Detroit...not too bad. I should have been in a pool for money or something...lol
@WWEFaNOFKANE1997
lol. When he was coaching Kansas State, he ended the streak of Kansas beating them 27 or so straight times, it was KSU's first win at their new arena since it was built.
when who was going ham?? Hansbrough?
