I am a die hard Tar Heel fan for life but I have to say the Heels didn’t win this game. Illinois lost it. It is staggering how many great looks they missed in the final two minutes. If they make just one of those threes things go very differently. The only play UNC made down the stretch was the Felton steal.
Loved Billy Packer calling Deron Williams the shut down man and then Felton drills a three seconds afterwards lol. This last five minutes was so nerve wracking. By far the two best teams in the country that season.

The 05 Illini were my childhood heroes! The greatest college basketball team to not win the title. It still stings to this day. It was a pleasure to watch these guys, and I will never forget the joy they brought me and my family!

Augustine fouled out early with that BS. 2nd half UNC was called for 6 fouls while ILLINI were called for 12. Watch the video at the 1:10 mark and tell me that’s a foul. Kofi Cockburn got fouled harder than that every single time he touched the ball in the post this entire season. If they play a 7 game series Illinois wins in 6.
1991 UNLV was probably the best team in the modern era not to win the national title. As a UNC fan, even 2005 UNC would not come close to beating a 1991 UNLV that brings their "A" game.
I been a Tar Heel fan since 81 when i was in 2nd grade. And im a native St. Louisan. To have them when in my hometown and i work in downtown St. Louis at the main post office. It was a magic monday night when Carolina Blue took it home in the STL!!!
After this past loss (2022) I needed to redeem my spirits. This year, 2022, was an amazing run, but my emotions were stabbed by losing the finals. Sheesh, this years loss was easily the worst of all UNC losses I've felt.
Nothing could ever be as bad as 2016 for me, but I was a senior at Carolina at the time so that's probably why. Losing that game when you know your time and Marcus and Brice's time at Carolina are almost over was brutal. As an out-of-stater the other titles were before I was a fan, so when 2005/2009 happened in real time I didn't have any feelings about them.
Don't let it hurt you. NO ONE expected us to be there and even with a poorly played second half(imo) and Kansas on fire, Kansas still *barely* escaped. If Love's shots had begun to fall and Bacot hadn't been hurt, it would've been different.
Any loss in tourney is tough, but we can't win them all. Our last 6 final four appearances (5 roy and 1 Hubert) we are 8-3 which is hard to do. Before Roy we had lost 4 straight National semifinal games which was frustrating.
The problem with Illinois was that they had to play UNC. If they would have played some other team they probably would have won. They were playing the best team in College Basketball that season. Illinois had the better record, but they was not the better team.
As a UNC fan, I remember not feeling confident going into this game. It is funny though watching this. I remember vividly that they kept using moving screens and I would be so mad lol.

If you look at Weber's overall career this one season was a total anomaly. His teams have had double-digit losses in 16 of his 23 seasons as a college basketball coach. I think this '05 season bought him a couple of extra seasons at Illinois than he otherwise would have gotten.
North Carolina went from 3 years of mediocrity under Matt Doherty to national Champs under Roy Williams in 2 years Doherty recruited a lot of the main guys but Williams coached them to the title
Illinois, why keep shooing threes? I mean, their last three to four shots from three minutes down wre threes that they missed. It stated 70-70 for a while then 72-70 and still shooting/missing threes. Thats why Carolina won and of course MAY that dude was a beast.

The reality is that Carolina was the better team in the post than Illinois and that disparity was greater than the advantage that Illinois had in the backcourt and perimeter over UNC. The two teams were evenly matched but the talent UNC had in the post was the anticipated difference which it was. Besides, UNC has moved on and won another two National Championships since then as well as was runner up in two other times since then.
