A light rub of 0000 steel wool will de-sticky the neck but I do mean light!
If you are using a compressor in front like you normally seem to, try it without. LPs are normally compressed.
Finally with the Monty’s/50s wiring, try setting your LP presets with guitar volumes and tones on 7 (look for the mid cut). Good luck.

That tone in the intro was one of the nicest things I've ever heard John play, and I'm generally not a fan of humbuckers.

Ya, he sounds great using gibsons...reminds me of that Eric Clapton thing, best tones with gibsons...don't fight it John!

John you can always sell it later, you can’t “unsell” it once it’s gone, and yes it will only open up the door to endless searching for the ‘perfect’ LP. Some of the best playing i have heard on this channel has been on that guitar, probably just cause it has a different voice to the K Lines and therefore inspires differently…

I have the 2002 standard as well, it’s virtually identical to yours. I played hundreds of gigs with it and I still love it after 22 years owning it. I once sold a USA 62 reissue shoreline gold strat years ago when I was skint and it’s still one of my biggest regrets. Don’t ever sell it, you make it sound amazing.

I have a 2002 LP Standard. I got it in 2007 or so and I really liked how it sounded but I only gigged with it occasionally. It never felt quite right. I just couldn't get totally comfortable. I thought about selling it a couple times. Last year I used it on a gig for the first time in a while and the band leader said "you need to use that guitar all the time." So 16 years after I bought it... I said I'm going to use this guitar every gig until it clicks. And it finally did. And now it actually feels like home... I'm very comfortable with it. So use it on a bunch of gigs before you decide either way! Also... I replaced the stock pickups with Suhr Thornbuckers. Very articulate. Big improvement, especially with the neck position.

I have shared this, maybe even on one of your vids before, but I have an EC-1000. I purchased when I was fairly young and it was quite $$$ for me at the time.
Since then I've had a love-hate relationship with it. I've tried selling it in the past, but it didn't sell (didn't try really hard). Now maybe close to 15- 20 years later...something like that, I'm actually glad I have it and it didn't sell. Sure it's not on the same level as rare-ness or cost as that Gibson, and maybe that is really the difference, but I've changed as a player a bit, love the heavy stuff, but font play it all that often, but the guitar can do a range of styles and it sounds and plays good. It took my taste to change to appreciate it. Sometimes that happens. I think I agree if it was me and I had that Gibson it would probably leave me feeling like I would want another if it sold. I think the money is already spent , you own it, there are at least somedays you enjoy it, and from a viewer/listeners perspective it sounds good and does change the way you play a bit. I am not a Gibson fan at all (PRS guy oddly enough these days) , but I'd probably hold onto it and give it more time , even more than you already have, and see what happens. Now if there was a guitar in the similar price range you knew you'd rather have, or heck for what that thing cost maybe even 2 guitars you'd rather have instead, then sure sell it. Otherwise, just hold onto it, and if in another year or two you still don't find you like it, then sell it.

Agree on the 0000 steel wool, and rub a little lemon wax on as well. It will make it smooth and buttery, but at the same time on hurt the finish in any significant way (that goes for your Fender Vintage strat as well...).

after close to 15 years of wanting one, ive finally made a purchase on a LP traditional. oddly enough, it was made 15 years ago! ive been a prs boi for the bulk of my guitar playing life and never really understood lespaul's sound. between my s2 custom 24 and this lp trad, i would still gig with my s2 any day. but the growl the les paul has is something ive never experienced before. its not cleaner or deeper than my s2. its not better built nor is it more comfortable to play. but theres just this thing that makes me want to love it despite its design shortcomings.

I can relate. I prefer to play my single cut PRS more than my Gibson Les Paul. However, I cannot bring myself to sell my Les Paul, because I do still like it, and it does still serve a purpose, and I feel like I have to have at least one real Les Paul in my collection. But I definitely don’t play it as often as my other guitars.

Let me tell you about my 99 Les Paul. It was my first one - I bought it in 2005. I played as my number one for years, and then lent it to the other guitarist in my band for about four years. Then I sold it to a guy in another city…. Then years later I found it and bought it back. THEN a buddy of mine borrowed it to do an album, and then took it to France…. And then last year seven years later I went to record at Abbey Road and my buddy met me there and I got it back.
Needless to say I regret letting it go over and over. Now it’s going to stay. Don’t let yours go either. There’s something special about a good LP.

Hello John, I think I know what troubles you about this beautiful instrument, I think these microphones are too powerful, they give a very round, open and strong sound with which you cannot find all these nuances of playing and this feeling which characterize you.
    Kind regards, Robert

The guitar will "sweat" inside a case because of the chemical content of the dye in the case lining. My friend had a (Gibson) 335, which he kept in the case for about a year, and when the case was opened, his wife could smell the inside lining from the other end of the house, and the deteriorating metal finishes on the guitar began to corrode and flake away. Maybe try using a gig-bag for normal storage when at home, and reserve tge case for use when you take the instrument out in the car to protect it.

I completely understand not getting it. My only electric for 30 years was a low grade SG 200, non stock, from a pawn shop in New Jersey. I finally “needed” a second guitar and was 100% certain it would be a LP. Then I played one and like you, didn’t get it. Bad access. Heavy. The archtop. I wasn’t ready. Bought a Firebird instead. (And a few other guitars along the way.)
Then I tried a LP again and I was ready for it for some reason. The sound. The amazing action. (Ignoring the access, of course.) It simply sounded like I wanted to sound. It’s now my #1 and feels like a security blanket when I gig.
Yours is a beautiful ax. I recommend you strap in, stand up, give it some buckle rash, and get lost in it..

I'm convinced at this point that most people have love hate relationships with Gibsons. I've bought and sold quite a few usually for cheaper, sturdier guitars with thinner necks that stay in tune better. That being said I also bought a Les Paul in 2021 and I fucking love it. The secret is that I stopped expecting it to be an easy to play guitar that stays in tune and just accepts it for what it is, a pretty guitar that makes a very nice sound that is not easy to replicate elsewhere. Your guitar has THAT sound. It sounds incredible man. Do not sell it. You will regret it. It sounds better than the Sire IMO.

You said it yourself... There is part in your brain that appreciates that there is Gibson on the headstock. We qualify that with quality and authenticity. I think that's why you still have it. In my earlier years I was also very sensitive about brand names. That changed when I played lots of cheaper brands that actually played and sound better then my Gibson VOS guitar.

I so identify with this. I'm more in love with the idea of the Gibson LP than the reality. I bought a Standard back in 2016 and it basically hung on the wall for 4 years before I sold it. I must have listed it on eBay about 6 times and changed my mind each time. For me it was partly the weight (just too heavy) and partly that I could never quite look on it as a tool to be played. I wanted to keep it pristine. I have a used Studio now that is the guitar I play the most. I reckon John will sell this eventually. I don't regret selling mine, other than I think if I'd kept it for 2 more years I could have got lots more money!

  • @fredsmith5791

The Les Paul sounds great! I wouldn't get rid of it. I've got 1 Eric Johnson Strat that plays like a dream, 2 Epiphone custom pros one white one black of which are my everyday players, 1 gibson Les Paul Studio, which is played sometimes. But my black epiphone custom pro is my go to guitar! I will never get rid of any of them now because i have such a variety to choose from for various sounds. I'd keep your Les Paul for playing rock and metal. It sounds great when you play it.

  • @chrisgmurray3622
    @chrisgmurray3622 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, if you want to sell, you can always do it later, and the later you do it the more value it will bring. Even if it isn't being played much, and languishes in storage/limbo, you can still sell it at a later date. This may go against your nature, but one has to make unusual sacrifices for your little one.😊

My 2 cents: 1. You should have kept the Lester. I have a 59 and I think it's incredible. 2. Maybe you'd like a more recent year Gibson Standard more? I've got a 2022 50s and it's really good in my opinion and in comparison to my L7 it's the better Les Paul. 3. I've got too many guitars.

Aha! At 6:13 you cut in the Sire and play what is probably the best passage of the whole jam. It clearly inspired you and sounded more “produced” than the Lester. Methinks you’re hanging onto the name on the headstock.

Hi John. I'm no where near your standard but I do have a lifetime of guitar ownership behind me. I've found that guitars are like people, they start out perfect but as you get to know them you see more flaws. Just ask do I want to be friends with this guitar? If you have any doubts then keep the guitar for a while unless you really need to sell it for the cash. One of my favourite guitars I didn't think I liked in the past but it just needed time, now I love it! Great vid as alway :)

If I’m confused on gear I don’t sell. Too risky. I usually only buy when it’s a good deal. So I know if I buy again later I’ll never get the same price. Confused status leaves me in a holding pattern - just in case.

I have a fantastic Les Paul. Perfect set up, 8lbs, pearly gates pups, a beautiful vintage vibe... I picked it up used in 2010 because I never really got over a friend's I used to play in the 70's! I've been a strat player my whole life and never really got the Les Paul. I play it still but I think it's just kind of nostalgia. Asides from banging away at some Zeppelin or Sex pistols now and then, it doesn't get played that much and it makes me feel guilty- because I really love it! Fender guitars seem as different to me as the Les Paul is to a piano!😅

During the video, you switched guitars. If I wasn't looking, I would not have noticed, as the tone was virtually identical. So, if your criteria for deciding to keep it is tone, I'd say it's redundant. I think playability, investment, prestige, etc. are a different part of the equation.

i've had four LP's over the years. I always want one because it's a Gibson. Also, in my mind, it fills a void in my collection. My honeymoon phase lasts thwo - three months and then I sell them. I tell myself i wound do it again. But I will... for sure. I have an excellent strat, a custom shop Tele and three suhr's. So no matter what, a LP won't play as nice as any of my other guitars. So I completely understand where your at. When I clicked on your video, I was hoping you would help me make up my mind.

I agree, sometimes the only saving factor for a guitar is the aesthetics, but it's still a GIBSON, I had an excellent Epi LP Tribute Plus, the only thing 'wrong' with it was between my ears, sounded great, 57 classics, long tendon etc. Now I have a Gibby LP Trad, so far happy with it, but sometimes it sits in the case for a while, but very thankful when I pull it out that I still have it, just my two cents! Btw, really enjoy your clips, been watching for about 1 year, your playing is out of the world, very inspiring!

I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio modified with SD Whole lotta pickups and wired phase/parallel a la Jimmy Page. It also is in and out of the case too! I went for studio is i hate Gibson binding which makes the necks wider, my studio does not have it, but my LP DC P90s does. It plays well and neck is fine. However, the gibson dc with JJguitar pickups P90s has an awesome sound, but the studio LP is an all rounder, but nothing special. I have a Jamstik studio which I use more, I have a Waghorn Sauria S HSS with Suhrs which is better as an all rounder. I have had mine up for sale too, but only lowish silly prices offered. None of the legends from the early days played a custom shop anything. They bought one that felt good and then made it their own. The problem these days is that no one wants to do anything with their guitar when they get it because they are already thinking about reselling it. My rule is if I'm already thinking about reselling it, I'm not gonna buy it. There are way better ways to invest your money if that's what you are looking to do.

Leave the guitar be, grab it only if you want to play it, don't force it.
If during that time you don't grab it, or when you grab it is ok but not special, then better to sell it I think.
I think looks great and LP are cool, and they sound great.
But I would not force myself to like it. I had an R8 that was awesome, but never felt comfortable with it, but it was because of its price tag. sold it and havent regretted it. But I have an Eastman SB59/v that I love. I also had a Gibson 2008 Traditional LP, a Heritage H-150 artisan aged, and the Eastman the only comparable one to the Custom shop. So Im very happy with the Eastman.
But me myself if I dont play it or makes me uncomfortable, I just prefer to sell it.

If a guitar doesn’t have “it” for you, just move on. In my view it’s a stone cold classic, and your playing on it was supreme. So me personally would have kept. But I’m not you. 😅

Just sell it. It's not a huge loss and you definitely have enough guitars. It's not an irreplaceable guitar.

The more confused John is, the better the tones and playing become.

Put it in a closet and forget about it for a year. If you then pull it out and don’t go wow, sell it and don’t look back.
BTW, I have mild OCD. The cure is cognitive therapy. Which you can do yourself if it’s mild.

Guitars are like women, if you aint feelin the love/magic anymore its time to let her go and find a new one. Especially since you have tried several times and the love just isn't there anymore. 💔 Seriously, it's time to let go, and move on. 😊

Drop it like a bad habit. You don’t love it so why keep it? I’ve owned and played Les Paul’s, then switched to PRS and won’t be back. I’m not going pay more for an inferior guitar.

awesome playing as usual.......get a used Ibanez for $300, stick w that and quit talking about all this idiot guitar stuff......music is about music is about music ffs........imagine if a guy was a world famous chef and half his videos were him and his audience bickering over which spoon was the best....I cant even believe that you would mention a "gold top" guitar......as if paint somehow mattered ....don't encourage the idiot guitar culture that exists....... teach us to play and inspire us with your incredible talent
