I think we all start out all bright eyed, just really wanting so badly to work for ourselves and build something and that’s where we make pricing mistakes. But hopefully you learn quickly that either you’re building a sustainable business or you’re not. It’s not just working for a decent wage, but for better tools to do a more efficient job and to take on bigger jobs. Enjoying your videos and can really relate to what you’re saying.
This is probably one of the best lawncare/leaf videos on the market listen, people this guy knows what hes talking about listen to every word this guy is telling you and you will have a successful longterm lawn business if you don't if you don't then he is exactly right you will not be back the next season to do somebody's yard. A person has to get paid for the work that they do and if they have an employee they need to be able to pay that employee a livable wage.
I started the man hour bidding this year and it was definitely a game changer! Went from $25/hr lol to $60/hr in 3 years. Overhead has increased 300%, but it comes with growth. 😀 Thanks for sharing! 🙌
you are right on wth what i charge.And when people start with "thats too much" i move on to the next. Yoo have to get that man hour rate to make it worth your time, to be able to pay your people a decent rate, to buy better equipment to make the job easier and more efficient, which allows you more profit and that grows your business. Thanks for sharing, there are definately alot of people who will learn from this.

U WILL FIT WAY MORE DEBRIS ON THE TRUCK AND MAKE LESS TRIPS TO THE DUMP.... HOPE THIS ONE SMALL TIP HELPS...
@@jesuschristfirst5775 Not at all, The air is still venting and the engine over revving with no resistance. The stain comes from stopping and starting your engine from loading it so fast, instead of continuing to work the machine as it was designed to do. Hauling air loads to the dump will end up costing a ton of wear and tear on the loaders as well as the trucks along with increased labor cost, not to mention the amount of fuel being wasted. We run Giant Vac/ Scag loaders with 30 and 60 horsepower engines. One machine is close to 20 yrs old with the same Wisconsin engine that only needs starter motors every few year's when they fail. You will see a huge difference this fall if you decrease your area of venting.... Hope this helps, good luck.

I was curious about that too. My guess is a tarp underneath to help slide it all out and a trip to the dump. I know my local dump charges next to nothing for all organic material.

I used to make a killing in my younger days picking up the jobs that were too expensive for people. Mostly older people on a fixed income. $200 yard I’d do for $50-$75, but it was just me with no overhead. I wasn’t getting rich but definitely getting by comfortably but I was push mowing and hand trimming and raking.
well thats the problem im having in the detroit area of michigan ... poeple have tonz of leaves and debris from fall and you give them a quote and you think you were robbing them ... especially with gutter cleaning ... i understand the economy is still struggling for people but you also have the undercutters out there with no insurance ... i have had to play LETS MAKE A DEAL to keep customers .. LMAO !!!!
@@clterry07 I wasn’t undercutting the landscapers. I was picking up jobs that otherwise would never get done. Got started by asking a landscaper for work and he pointed me to houses that couldn’t afford his quotes.
Great video as usual. I think I will do the same next fall with leaf clean ups and bill out total man hours. It makes sense as it's fair both ways to the contractor and client. I ran into the same situation that I quoted, got hired and when I did it, leaves were soaking wet. Ideally we want to do this when leaves are dry but when we don't have a choice with weather, we just have to get it done.
Dude you're absolutely right. It's proven 2 people work 5x faster then 1 person. I'm a solo owner/operator and bring solo is only plateauing me. I'm blessed to have the accounts I have, but being solo limits me...
A lot of great sayings by you here! I had the same setup last year for cleanups. My one recommendation would be to throw a bagger on that walk behind and try to suck some of those leaves up before throwing them in the leaf loader. I noticed that it takes up maybe a 1/10th of the space in the truck bed if u mow them up first. Obviously the one with the oak leaves thats not feasible but with the smaller cleanups you maybe could do it
Here in Long Island NY we have lots of lowballers cut grass for $35 for 4000sf. Told my neighbors, I will take care your property for $45 and she laughed at me🙄 . Keep up good work my friend.
Same thing here in Southern California. He put $300 for leaf clean up in the thumbnail and I just instantly rolled my eyes because NO ONE will pay for that here in Southern California. But that’s how much it should cost. Lots of illegals immigrants charge low because they dump in abandoned areas so watch out for who you hire.

@@biggus6633 here in Arizona i own a landscaping business. The highest i charged for a clean up was $1000 and right away they agreed and payed me. Me and my helper finished the job in 4 hours

Great video, just started my Lawn Care Business and am bidding out leave removals every couple of days. I was trying to do all these equations on leaf removal and it was very frustrating. My wife just told me to bill by the hour like i normally do for Hardscapes, and thats made it much easier to bid. Thanks for the videos and affirming my pricing, ha.
I do we landscape in for live in I have smaller lawns and I charged them from 35 to $45 a lawn each week it's not by the month it's not buy the year and leave time I charging by the hour you're doing it the same way I do thank you for this video
Ya I don't think many people realize how much work is involved. Sometimes one property will take twice as long as one the same size. Its always good to hear that i am not alone in the way that I bid and bill out the work

Been in Business for 32 years. Throughout the years I have learned how to downsize on employee numbers and how to do jobs more efficient and fast. I went from seven people on a crew for fall cleanup to myself and one other guy. Our average lawn takes us about 30 minutes to do. Our minimum charge is $250.00. We have a very powerful 40 horsepower zero turn mower with a huge vacuum collection system with electric dump box. We have a leaf plow attachment on Hydraulics that mounts on the front of the mower. We have the largest backpack blowers on the market and a stand-on blower. We have a 14 inch wide leaf vacuum mounted on a 7 by 14 Dymp trailer with 8-foot sides. The average 10 to 12 Lawns per day and most of them we do the fall Cleanup in two stages which means we make a minimum of $500 per account.
Hi guys, there are valid points to both sides, and there is a place and time for everything , nothing or nobody is perfect in this world , so as we all know, everything has pros and cons , so we all have to weight the risks vs the rewards, of all that we do in life and in business , no need to offend each other and accomplish nothing in result, an open discussion should always be welcome, because that’s how we learn and grow and how great things get accomplished !. Europeans and Americans are the same people , please don’t forget that! Let’s learn from each other and exchange ideas, but please , in a respectful manner, Life is to short and precious, for all this non sense .
So essentially, it took 1 man hour per tree. Easy pricing would be to count the number of trees (5), multiply by a per man hour rate (say $60) and that is your minimum, so $300. Add dump fee and and a "buffer" fee and now the charge is $375-$400. Your rates may vary as will the size of the trees and the weight/wetness/ice of them. If it is late in the season, you'll have to decide if you need the job and charge a normal rate or if not, charge extra for the wet/ice difficulty.
Great video brother. Charge what you need to charge and stand behind it. Competition wont stand the test of time when they realize they wernt charging enough! Know your worth! ie know your numbers. Rule #1 Employees make you money.

Usually when a customer says that their other guy is not doing it anymore it's because the customer is not paying them or who they hired was doing it for dirt cheap and they can't afford to do it anymore

Leaf cleanups are such easy cash jobs..on my own I can earn 3k or more a day.I spent 5 weeks doing fall clean ups seven days a week flat out and I made just under 100 k..easy money
Once your truck is full of leaves, what is your process for unloading as it does not appear that you have a dump bed. Do you find you need to dump your truck after every yard?
Hook your key ring with keys and car fob) to a strong, like CLIMBERS, carabiner (not the cheap ones). Then clip to pants pocket or other. Don't recommend putting on belt loops. Try it. They will not come off if you've hooked them right. Been doing this for 10 years and never lost my set of keys. Friends who've lost expensive key fobs now take my advice. Cheers
10:07 I don't mean to be overly critical, cuz frankly this isn't my wheelhouse, but would wetting that tarp on your truck bed help to keep the dust down or is it just inevitable that you guys are all breathing in dust all day
Leaf plows is the thicket for mobing the big piles...sucks even with the big br700s...use them to makw the pile and push it into a big pile at the road...and then usw the vac to pick it up
Hey so on the whole man hour thing. You set the price for the man hour based on what? And if say you set it at $60 and you got one helper and you get the job in one hour you will bill the client for 2 man hours totalling $120 and then you will pay your helper $18 and $102 would go to pay yourself and the expenses such as gas and equipment? Am I along the ballpark of how it works?
That's pretty much it. The man hour rate is figured up by figuring all of the business cost to run the job as well as overhead cost. Once you know that you can break it down to how much it cost to run the business per hour and that will give you your break even point. That's the amount of money that you have to make and hour just to pay the expenses after that your business will start to make money. Figure in the labor per hour plus profit for the business to make future purchases so that it can continue to stay open when equipment needs replaced and your pretty dead on where you need to be. The common breakdown is 30% expenses 30%labor and 30profit% the other 10% will find its way into one of those buckets 🪣
I thought I was pricey last year but just increased to 50 a yard this year because of gas prices. Lost a bunch of customers. I lost one of my biggest accounts because I charged 60 per man hour for a leaf cleanup. I'm wondering if I should come in cheaper on the leaf cleanups now because of it. Trying to focus on more comercial than anything but def more opportunities with residential
Relative to overhead. Can’t imagine you’ll be happy with your profit, dropping below 60. Rarely will I drop below 75. The unforeseen can be quite costly too.
Ask that commercial customer if they had to/chose to, increase their prices to their own customers. And if so, how much? If not, how long do they expect to stay in business?
I bill at a high hourly rate 100 per man hour but with my technique and the best equipment money can buy I am able to get it done fast and efficiently with no complaints at that rate.
Here where I live I charge 85$ per man hr the competition is around the same 75 to 85$ per man hrs plus I charge $100 to take the leaves and debris with me
I just started doing that hourly I charge 50 a hour for myself but raised it to 75 hourly sometimes I have a guy working with me but I estimate how long it going to take because I try my best to do a really good job and get the property clean I lost money by trying to charge cheap.
I had my lawn care guy come every 2 wks. come mid Oct he did house lawn that had 3 trees down.did nice job.billed me 450$.I pd it no grief.but I had 11 more trees not yet dropped.And I thought how much is that gonna cost me.?So I kindly let him go and started doing it myself cuz I was able.
With your 3 man team that took 5 hours, if you were by yourself how long would the same job have taken you? Some people like to go solo, but they forget that a job that takes them 8-10 man hours, could be done in 4-5 man hours. And instead of only being able to charge $40/man hour they could charge $60/man hour. They get paid more, the client pays a little less, and everyone is happy, plus they get to hang out with some fellas or felleretts that they trained how to do just as good of work as they did.
someone please help me out.. I can make this set up with a regular agri-fab mulcher and vacuum just like he has right?? ill just take the motor off and hook it up to my trailer and have the hose going into my dump. Removing sharp weeds from gravel driveway is challenging. So is thinking of ways to protect the damn, to the pond, which is the road entrance to my property. Ground critters are distroying it. I don't want to use toxins for either challenge. Got any tips?
Interesting. If your looking for a spray there are homemade mixes from vinegar, dish soap and salt but I'm not to sure how well they work. I would probably mechanically nock down the weeds and heavily plant the dame wall with a ground cover that will prevent the weeds from growing in the future once it's established. Then you will have erosion control as well as something low line that looks manicured.
I don't get this whole "man hour" thing that you're talking about ... When my wife works with me, should I bill 77 cents on the dollar? Just having fun here :)

Not to brag or anything and I respect your hustle but I also work with my pops in Landscaping and we have houses in santa Monica and Hollywood area in Los Angeles and I pick up those amounts by myself while the other worker blows the leafs into small piles and I have to fit it all in 3 to 6 green trash cans and bbn I have to stomp on top of the can to make it all fit and we get it done in an hour or less ! But good thing I can eat it up with the lawn mower most of the time but when we cant mow the lawn man its sucks but work with is work lol shout out man

I climb in it and pull them out with a hard rake. It sucks but it's the best way. When they are wet it's not fun but if they are dry it's a really quick process.
Having efficient employees and/or helpers makes all the difference to tackle large leaf jobs. Over billable man hours, do you charge extra to haul debris away? Also, do you have to pay to dump the leaves at a landfill or recycle center?
Also we have lots of deciduous trees and there are lots of leaves. We blow them into gutter in the street and our local council sends a truck to vacuum them up.
question, im a one man crew. what should i be charging for leaf clean ups that are 16-30 bags? how do you charge? i typically do hourly and get burned b.c i work to fast. efficiently. im really struggling with rates to charge... :( (just a blower/rake and leaf bags is my set up. 30 leaf bags depending on how hard you pack them(I STUFF mine) I try to get $10(a few years ago)-12 per bag(current times) If going by hours $80-100 per hour is a good rate if you do excellent & efficient work
GetoFly is pretty right on. I don't charge by the bag but solo the hourly rate is generally between $100 to $150 it sounds crazy but that's what it takes.
I was thinking about taking neighbors yard and going around just knocking on doors and asking people if they need work for raking leaves. How'd you do? Small bagged mower, rake, trash can and dispose on site or in paper bags for trash pickup works wonders. Charge by the hour or job remembering that it'll take at least twice as long maybe 3 times when bagging leaves. So if it takes you 1 hour to push mow with no bagging, it is now 3 hours. If you charge $50 per hour, that's $150 for the job. Remember you should have insurance. Rocks FLY. Also gas, oil, blades, vehicle gas to get there, paper bags if necessary and general wear and tear on the mower. Plus taxes. So if you charge $50/hour it probably cost $7 in miscellaneous expenses leaving $43. Of that $43, you need to pay about 30% to the IRS leaving $30 per hour to you after taxes. $30/hour times 40 hours/week is $1,200. $1,200 times 50 weeks is $60,000 per year. Is that enough? That is a pre-tax gross average of about $85,000/year if you could do that year 'round or about $57,000/year working 8 months/year.
Oh man I have had jobs with way more leaves and ending up I only got paid $150-200 imma start charging real cost cause they don’t wanna pay dump fee !! Or they have me do the job when the leaves are soaking wet so it’s harder for me and weighs more
I was listening to the rest of your video I had SOOO many $35/40 jobs that didn’t pay for my actual labor and I went over lawns multiple times with mower edging weeding pruning etc everything and I can’t believe every single person was so surprised when I ask for more they think it’s a necessity not a luxury ! Mow/mulch a time or 2 before bagging on your riding mower. Also, you can attach a folded tarp "envelope" to your mower chute to help things go faster.

My one recommendation would be to throw a bagger on that walk behind and try to suck some of those leaves up before throwing them in the leaf loader. I noticed that it takes up maybe a 1/10th of the space in the truck bed if u mow them up first. Obviously the one with the oak leaves thats not feasible but with the smaller cleanups you maybe could do it
Here in Long Island NY we have lots of lowballers cut grass for $35 for 4000sf. Told my neighbors, I will take care your property for $45 and she laughed at me🙄 . Keep up good work my friend.
Same thing here in Southern California. He put $300 for leaf clean up in the thumbnail and I just instantly rolled my eyes because NO ONE will pay for that here in Southern California. But that’s how much it should cost. Lots of illegals immigrants charge low because they dump in abandoned areas so watch out for who you hire.

Here in AZ i have clients that pay me $70 to cut there grass and i get them done in 25 minutes each property

I do we landscape in for live in I have smaller lawns and I charged them from 35 to $45 a lawn each week it's not by the month it's not buy the year and leave time I charging by the hour you're doing it the same way I do thank you for this video
Ya I don't think many people realize how much work is involved. Sometimes one property will take twice as long as one the same size. Its always good to hear that i am not alone in the way that I bid and bill out the work

Been in Business for 32 years.
Throughout the years I have learned how to downsize on employee numbers and how to do jobs more efficient and fast.
I went from seven people on a crew for fall cleanup to myself and one other guy.
Our average lawn takes us about 30 minutes to do.
Our minimum charge is $250.00.
We have a very powerful 40 horsepower zero turn mower with a huge vacuum collection system with electric dump box.
We have a leaf plow attachment on Hydraulics that mounts on the front of the mower.
We have the largest backpack blowers on the market and a stand-on blower.
We have a 14 inch wide leaf vacuum mounted on a 7 by 14 Dymp trailer with 8-foot sides.
The average 10 to 12 Lawns per day and most of them we do the fall Cleanup in two stages which means we make a minimum of $500 per account.

How much it cost you to dump in your area how much a full load weigh
So essentially, it took 1 man hour per tree. Easy pricing would be to count the number of trees (5), multiply by a per man hour rate (say $60) and that is your minimum, so $300. Add dump fee and and a "buffer" fee and now the charge is $375-$400. Your rates may vary as will the size of the trees and the weight/wetness/ice of them. If it is late in the season, you'll have to decide if you need the job and charge a normal rate or if not, charge extra for the wet/ice difficulty.

Usually when a customer says that their other guy is not doing it anymore it's because the customer is not paying them or who they hired was doing it for dirt cheap and they can't afford to do it anymore

Leaf cleanups are such easy cash jobs..on my own I can earn 3k or more a day.I spent 5 weeks doing fall clean ups seven days a week flat out and I made just under 100 k..easy money
After enough years in business you know what it's going to take to do the job and you can do a flat rate.
I have a friend in Michigan and they have a minimum 75.00 per cut charge for cutting grass
Once your truck is full of leaves, what is your process for unloading as it does not appear that you have a dump bed. Do you find you need to dump your truck after every yard?
Typically it will take a full day to fill up so I dump it at the end of the day or early in the morning

Hook your key ring with keys and car fob) to a strong, like CLIMBERS, carabiner (not the cheap ones). Then clip to pants pocket or other. Don't recommend putting on belt loops. Try it. They will not come off if you've hooked them right. Been doing this for 10 years and never lost my set of keys. Friends who've lost expensive key fobs now take my advice. Cheers

Leaf plows is the thicket for mobing the big piles...sucks even with the big br700s...use them to makw the pile and push it into a big pile at the road...and then usw the vac to pick it up

And if say you set it at $60 and you got one helper and you get the job in one hour you will bill the client for 2 man hours totalling $120 and then you will pay your helper $18 and $102 would go to pay yourself and the expenses such as gas and equipment? Am I along the ballpark of how it works?
That's pretty much it.
The man hour rate is figured up by figuring all of the business cost to run the job as well as overhead cost. Once you know that you can break it down to how much it cost to run the business per hour and that will give you your break even point. That's the amount of money that you have to make and hour just to pay the expenses after that your business will start to make money.
Figure in the labor per hour plus profit for the business to make future purchases so that it can continue to stay open when equipment needs replaced and your pretty dead on where you need to be.
The common breakdown is 30% expenses 30%labor and 30profit% the other 10% will find its way into one of those buckets 🪣
What is the motor on top of the trailer that's "sucking" them into the hopper (bed of the truck)? I can't seem to find any online.
I thought I was pricey last year but just increased to 50 a yard this year because of gas prices. Lost a bunch of customers. I lost one of my biggest accounts because I charged 60 per man hour for a leaf cleanup. I'm wondering if I should come in cheaper on the leaf cleanups now because of it. Relative to overhead. Can’t imagine you’ll be happy with your profit, dropping below 60. Rarely will I drop below 75. The unforeseen can be quite costly too.
Ask that commercial customer if they had to/chose to, increase their prices to their own customers. And if so, how much? If not, how long do they expect to stay in business?
Just pump out more advertising and gain new clients at the new prices everything will quickly fall back into balance
I bill at a high hourly rate 100 per man hour but with my technique and the best equipment money can buy I am able to get it done fast and efficiently with no complaints at that rate.

Here where I live I charge 85$ per man hr the competition is around the same 75 to 85$ per man hrs plus I charge $100 to take the leaves and debris with me

I just started doing that hourly I charge 50 a hour for myself but raised it to 75 hourly sometimes I have a guy working with me but I estimate how long it going to take because I try my best to do a really good job and get the property clean I lost money by trying to charge cheap.
I had my lawn care guy come every 2 wks. come mid Oct he did house lawn that had 3 trees down.did nice job.billed me 450$.I pd it no grief.but I had 11 more trees not yet dropped.And I thought how much is that gonna cost me.?So I kindly let him go and started doing it myself cuz I was able.

With your 3 man team that took 5 hours, if you were by yourself how long would the same job have taken you?
Some people like to go solo, but they forget that a job that takes them 8-10 man hours, could be done in 4-5 man hours. And instead of only being able to charge $40/man hour they could charge $60/man hour.
They get paid more, the client pays a little less, and everyone is happy, plus they get to hang out with some fellas or felleretts that they trained how to do just as good of work as they did.

If you can find a billygoat or little wonder in the off season for around 1000 to 1500 they are well worth it.
Removing sharp weeds from gravel driveway is challenging. So is thinking of ways to protect the damn, to the pond, which is the road entrance to my property.
Ground critters are distroying it.
I don't want to use toxins for either challenge.

Interesting. If your looking for a spray there are homemade mixes from vinegar, dish soap and salt but I'm not to sure how well they work.
I would probably mechanically nock down the weeds and heavily plant the dame wall with a ground cover that will prevent the weeds from growing in the future once it's established. Then you will have erosion control as well as something low line that looks manicured.

Not to brag or anything and I respect your hustle but I also work with my pops in Landscaping and we have houses in santa Monica and Hollywood area in Los Angeles and I pick up those amounts by myself while the other worker blows the leafs into small piles and I have to fit it all in 3 to 6 green trash cans and bbn I have to stomp on top of the can to make it all fit and we get it done in an hour or less ! But good thing I can eat it up with the lawn mower most of the time but when we cant mow the lawn man its sucks but work with is work lol shout out man

Try pointing your blower down from the corner, then blow out of the corner along the walls.
Blow air onto the wall about 2 to 3 ft up and they will blow out and away from the wall. Corners are a pain sometimes.

I climb in it and pull them out with a hard rake. It sucks but it's the best way. When they are wet it's not fun but if they are dry it's a really quick process.

Having efficient employees and/or helpers makes all the difference to tackle large leaf jobs. Over billable man hours, do you charge extra to haul debris away? Also, do you have to pay to dump the leaves at a landfill or recycle center?

30 leaf bags depending on how hard you pack them(I STUFF mine) I try to get $10(a few years ago)-12 per bag(current times)
If going by hours $80-100 per hour is a good rate if you do excellent & efficient work
GetoFly is pretty right on. I don't charge by the bag but solo the hourly rate is generally between $100 to $150 it sounds crazy but that's what it takes.

I was thinking about taking neighbors yard and going around just knocking on doors and asking people if they need work for raking leaves. How'd you do? Small bagged mower, rake, trash can and dispose on site or in paper bags for trash pickup works wonders. Charge by the hour or job remembering that it'll take at least twice as long maybe 3 times when bagging leaves. So if it takes you 1 hour to push mow with no bagging, it is now 3 hours. If you charge $50 per hour, that's $150 for the job. Remember you should have insurance. Rocks FLY. Also gas, oil, blades, vehicle gas to get there, paper bags if necessary and general wear and tear on the mower. Plus taxes. So if you charge $50/hour it probably cost $7 in miscellaneous expenses leaving $43. Of that $43, you need to pay about 30% to the IRS leaving $30 per hour to you after taxes. $30/hour times 40 hours/week is $1,200. $1,200 times 50 weeks is $60,000 per year. Is that enough? That is a pre-tax gross average of about $85,000/year if you could do that year 'round or about $57,000/year working 8 months/year.
